To compare phone cameras, assess each camera module—main, ultra-wide, telephoto and front—on its own, then consider how the phone’s processing shapes the finished image. For a buying decision, matched sample photos matter more than any single specification.
Start with each camera module, not one headline number
A phone’s “camera” is usually a collection of cameras with different sensors, lenses, framing and features. The main camera may have optical stabilization while the ultra-wide does not; autofocus or close-focus capability may also vary by module. Compare the camera you expect to use for a particular shot rather than treating the phone’s highest resolution as a score for the whole system.
Use the same set of specifications for each model and module. Manufacturer pages describe stated capabilities; they do not, by themselves, establish which phone produces better photographs.
| Module or system | Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Main or wide | Resolution, published sensor size, aperture, equivalent focal length or field of view, autofocus and optical image stabilization (OIS) | Often the everyday camera, used for general scenes and many low-light photos. |
| Ultra-wide | Resolution, field of view, aperture, autofocus and any stated macro or close-focus support | Shows a wider scene; close-focus options and image characteristics can differ from the main camera. |
| Telephoto | Optical focal length or reach, sensor size, aperture, autofocus and OIS | Frames distant subjects. A separate telephoto camera is different from enlarging a crop digitally. |
| Front or selfie | Resolution, aperture, field of view, autofocus and video modes | Affects self-portraits, group framing and front-camera video. |
| Processing and video | HDR, night and portrait features; video resolution and frame rate; stabilization modes and recording formats | The saved photo or video depends on capture and processing as well as optics. |
What megapixels tell you—and what they leave out
Megapixels describe pixel resolution: roughly, how many pixels make up an image. Higher resolution can provide more detail to work with or more room to crop, but the MP figure does not tell you the sensor’s physical area, lens quality, stabilization, image processing or the resolution used by default. It is one useful specification, not a verdict on image quality.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
For example, Apple lists the iPhone 17 main camera as 48 MP alongside a 26 mm focal length, ƒ/1.6 aperture, sensor-shift OIS and processing features. Those additional details show why the resolution figure alone is incomplete; they do not prove how it compares in finished photos with another phone. Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications are model-specific and may change.
Compare sensor size and aperture carefully
Sensor size
A published sensor size can help distinguish camera hardware, but compare like with like: main camera against main camera, or ultra-wide against ultra-wide. Manufacturers may present sensor information in different ways, and a specification page may not provide directly comparable details for every module. Treat listed dimensions as manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Google’s Pixel hardware specifications illustrate the value of checking each module: the page lists sensor size, aperture and other details by camera. It includes figures such as 1/1.3-inch for a wide camera and 1/2.51-inch for ultra-wide and telephoto modules, but its page covers multiple device generations. Confirm the exact model entry before using a figure in a model-to-model comparison. Google Pixel phone hardware specifications
Aperture
Aperture is the lens opening that lets light reach the sensor. A smaller f-number indicates a wider opening. Aperture is relevant to light gathering and depth of field, but it does not settle low-light performance: sensor, lens, exposure, stabilization, subject movement and processing also affect the result. Google’s camera explainer discusses aperture in relation to light reaching the sensor and depth of field. Google Store’s phone-camera explainer

Read framing and zoom claims by camera
Focal length describes framing in combination with the sensor; field of view tells you how much of the scene the camera captures. For useful comparisons, check equivalent focal length or field of view rather than relying on labels such as “wide” or “zoom.” Android’s camera documentation describes the relationship between sensor physical width and focal length used to derive field of view. Android’s CaptureResult reference
Also identify which views come from separate camera modules. Apple lists the iPhone 17 main camera at 26 mm and ultra-wide at 13 mm, as well as a 52 mm 2× telephoto view enabled by the main system. Its specifications distinguish optical zoom range from digital zoom. Digital enlargement is not additional optical reach, so read the manufacturer’s precise wording rather than treating every zoom number as equivalent. Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications

Look for autofocus and any stated focus system on each module; do not assume every camera on the phone focuses in the same way. Check whether OIS is specified, and whether electronic image stabilization (EIS) is also listed. Android describes OIS as compensating for small camera movements during capture. It can help counter camera shake, but it does not freeze a moving subject or guarantee a sharp image. Android’s CameraCharacteristics reference

Google’s hardware specifications, for example, list optical and electronic stabilization for certain wide and telephoto cameras. Use the per-module details for the model you are considering rather than assuming that a phone-wide description applies equally to all cameras. Google Pixel phone hardware specifications
Account for processing, then compare real photos
Phone software can alter tone, detail, noise, HDR, night scenes, portraits and sharpening in the saved image. Google describes computational photography as software enhancement beyond traditional camera hardware. Apple names features such as Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion and Smart HDR in its iPhone specifications. These names help describe what a manufacturer says its system does; they are not standardized scores that let you rank different brands. Google Store’s camera explainer and Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications
When choosing between phones, compare sample photos in the conditions that matter to you: daylight, indoor light, night scenes, moving subjects, portraits or distant details. Prefer samples with similar framing and scene conditions, and compare the relevant module rather than, for example, a main-camera shot against a telephoto shot. Manufacturer feature lists and specifications cannot substitute for these comparisons.
A repeatable way to compare two camera systems
- List the cameras separately. Record main, ultra-wide, telephoto and front-camera details for each phone; note if a view is produced by a separate module or by cropping.
- Use consistent comparison fields. For each module, note resolution, published sensor size, aperture, focal length or field of view, autofocus and OIS/EIS where stated.
- Separate hardware from software claims. Record named HDR, night, portrait and video features, but do not treat their names as a cross-brand performance rating.
- Compare the photos you actually need. Look for matched scenes and framing in relevant lighting and subject conditions. If you cannot find comparable samples, the specification sheets alone do not establish a winner.
For instance, an iPhone 16 comparison should use its own model-specific page: Apple lists a 48 MP main camera and a separate 12 MP ultra-wide camera, with focal length, aperture, stabilization and processing details. Do not transfer those figures to another iPhone generation. Apple’s iPhone 16 Tech Specs
