To reduce the chance of adware or other unwanted software getting onto your devices, install apps only from official stores or software makers’ verified websites, read every installer screen, reject extras you did not request, avoid download ads and alarming pop-ups, and keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated. On Windows, also check the potentially unwanted app controls in Windows Security; on Android, leave unknown-app installation off unless you have a specific need. These precautions lower risk, but none guarantees that every unwanted app will be blocked.
What counts as adware—and what prevention can do
Adware displays advertising, sometimes in intrusive ways. It can overlap with the broader category of potentially unwanted applications (PUA), which may also offer or install other software. Microsoft notes that not all PUA is classified as malware, so an unwanted app and a confirmed malware infection are not automatically the same thing. Microsoft’s overview of potentially unwanted applications explains the distinction and prevention basics.
Prevention is mainly about avoiding deceptive downloads and limiting what can be installed. Updates and built-in protections add another layer, but cannot make an unsafe download trustworthy.
Habits that help on every device
Download from a source you can verify
Use the device’s official app store or the software maker’s official website. Check the site address yourself rather than following an unsolicited ad, search-result download button, or pop-up. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns against unfamiliar free-download sites and software ads, which may lead to bundled or unwanted software. FTC guidance on malware and Microsoft’s description of unwanted software both discuss the risks of software distribution and bundling.

Read setup screens and decline extras
During installation, review each screen instead of clicking through. Decline browser extensions, toolbars, search-engine changes, bundled apps, or other offers you did not seek. An installer can deliver unwanted software alongside a program you intended to install, so a familiar app name does not make every setup option desirable.
Dismiss alarming pop-ups without using their buttons
Do not install a “fix,” update, plug-in, or security tool offered by a page claiming your device is infected. Apple warns that deceptive pop-ups can impersonate trusted notices or offer downloads to trick people into installing unwanted software. Close or dismiss the page using the browser controls, not the pop-up’s buttons. Apple’s guidance on blocking pop-ups in Safari explains this risk.

Keep software updated and scan external storage
Turn on automatic updates for the operating system, browser, and security software where available. The FTC recommends automatic updating for these components; keeping them current helps reduce exposure to known risks but does not make downloads from untrusted sources safe. The FTC also recommends scanning external storage before using it. See the FTC’s malware prevention advice.
Windows: enable potentially unwanted app blocking
Windows Security includes reputation-based protection controls for potentially unwanted apps. Microsoft’s support instructions recommend enabling both app and download blocking. The precise menu wording can vary by Windows version.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select App & browser control, then Reputation-based protection.
- Review potentially unwanted app blocking and turn on Block apps and Block downloads, if those options are available.
The two controls do different jobs: Block apps can detect PUA that has already been downloaded or installed, including through another browser. Block downloads checks downloads and works with Microsoft Edge. Microsoft’s Windows PUA guidance also describes Smart App Control in Windows 11 and SmartScreen in Edge as additional protections. These features supplement, rather than replace, careful downloading and current software.
Apple devices: use trusted downloads and treat persistent pop-ups cautiously
Keep iOS, iPadOS, or macOS current and prefer the App Store when installing apps. In Safari, pop-up settings can limit interruptions, but blocking pop-ups is not proof that a device is free of unwanted software. Apple says pop-ups that persist despite browser settings may indicate that adware or other unwanted software was downloaded. Do not click a pop-up’s offer to fix the device or download an update; follow Apple’s guidance for Safari pop-ups instead. Apple: Block pop-ups in Safari.

Android: restrict installations from outside Google Play
The FBI’s mobile-device security guidance recommends limiting app installation to Google Play and keeping Install unknown apps disabled unless it is absolutely necessary. The setting’s location and label differ among Android versions and device makers, so use your manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on a universal menu path. If you temporarily allow an app to install from an outside source, disable that permission again when you are done. FBI mobile-device security guidance.

Unexpected advertising or other changes can be clues, but symptoms alone do not establish that adware is installed. The FTC lists slowdowns, browser redirects, new toolbars or add-ons, and frequent unexpected pop-ups among possible signs of malware. Apple specifically notes that pop-ups persisting despite Safari’s settings may point to adware or other unwanted software.
