Keep your model identifier and review prompts in version-controlled application configuration, monitor the provider’s retirement notices, and test a supported replacement on representative pull requests before switching. A deprecation announcement is not necessarily an immediate shutdown: the provider specifies when access ends, and its timelines vary by model and service.
Deprecation is not the same as shutdown
For OpenAI API models, a model is deprecated when retirement is announced; access ends on its shutdown date. OpenAI uses “sunset” and “shut down” interchangeably for the point when the service is no longer accessible. Check the current OpenAI API deprecation page for the announcement, shutdown date, and recommended replacement for the specific model you use.
OpenAI’s stated notice policy is generally at least six months for generally available models and at least three months for specialized variants of generally available models. Preview models may receive much shorter notice: OpenAI gives two weeks as an example. Safety or compliance concerns may also shorten notice. These are OpenAI policy categories, not guarantees that apply to every provider. Treat dates as model-specific and recheck the live notice because schedules can change.
Inventory what the review workflow depends on
Before choosing a replacement, map the components that could break or change behavior. Record:

- The model identifier and provider endpoint.
- Prompt templates and system instructions.
- Structured-output formats, tool calls, and model-specific parameters.
- The repositories, pull-request events, and jobs that invoke the review service.
- Failure handling, alerting, and the human review fallback.
Keep this inventory with the service’s maintenance documentation. A model change can affect more than the name in a request: prompts, parameters, outputs, and downstream assumptions may also need adjustment.
Track notices and verify product availability
Subscribe to provider email and changelog notices, and put each relevant announcement and shutdown date on the team’s maintenance calendar. OpenAI says affected customers are notified and lists retirements on its deprecation page; the page should still be checked directly before a migration decision.

Confirm that the replacement is supported in the exact surface your workflow uses. Availability in an API does not establish availability in an IDE extension or an integrated review product. For GitHub Copilot, consult its supported models and retirement history; GitHub directs users to vendor support information when availability is unclear.
Keep prompts and model settings reviewable
Put reusable prompt content and mutable behavior settings in application code or an equivalent versioned system. That lets changes receive normal code review, testing, and deployment controls rather than living only in a managed prompt configuration.

For prompts managed on the OpenAI API platform, OpenAI’s migration guidance is to move prompt content out of the managed prompt object and into application code. See OpenAI’s prompt migration guide and its prompt engineering guide. Apply the same versioning principle to model identifiers and parameters so a replacement can be reviewed and rolled back as an application change.
Evaluate the replacement before switching
Build a representative pull-request set
Use anonymized or otherwise approved historical pull requests that reflect normal changes as well as important risk areas for your codebase. For each example, record the findings reviewers expect and known false positives. Protect secrets and follow your organization’s rules before sending code or pull-request content to any provider.

OpenAI says its notice periods give developers time to evaluate replacements, test application behavior, and complete migration. Its guidance does not prescribe a code-review benchmark or a universal pass threshold, so define evaluation cases around your team’s own risks and review workload.

- Whether useful issues are found, including important issues the model misses.
- Whether findings are actionable and correctly tied to the code.
- The false-positive burden on human reviewers.
- Response failures and how the workflow recovers from them.
- Latency and cost at your actual review volume.
Set acceptance thresholds that fit your team’s risk tolerance and review process. No universal quality, latency, or cost threshold is established by the provider guidance.

- Choose the supported replacement. Start with the provider’s recommended successor, then verify support in the API or product surface that runs your reviews.
- Update versioned configuration. Change the model identifier, prompt, and any required parameters through the ordinary review and deployment process.
- Stage the change if your architecture allows it. Use a configuration flag, a staged repository rollout, or a shadow comparison to limit exposure while checking behavior.
- Watch workflow health. Alert on failed review jobs and make sure a human review path remains available if model requests fail.
- Keep rollback realistic. A prior route is usable only while the provider still serves it and policy permits its use. Do not depend on it after the shutdown date.
- Clean up after cutover. Remove the retired identifier and obsolete parameters, update runbooks, and retain the evaluation set for the next model change.
Use the same process for the next retirement
Once the replacement is stable, preserve the inventory, evaluation examples, acceptance criteria, and rollout steps as part of the review service’s operational documentation. This turns the next model change into a controlled configuration and quality decision instead of an emergency edit.
