To clean earbuds safely, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and for each part: removable tips, the earbud shell, speaker mesh, charging contacts, and case. There is no universal recipe—brands differ on whether tips may be washed and whether any liquid is allowed. Keep liquid out of electronics, openings, ports, mesh, and contacts unless the model-specific instructions describe a controlled procedure.
Before you clean: identify the model, tip material, and part
Check the exact earbud model and whether its tips are silicone, foam, or another material. Confirm whether the tips detach and find the maker’s instructions for each area you plan to clean. A method permitted for one model or part may damage another.
- Removable tips: Follow the instructions for the exact tip material and model.
- Shell: Check which liquids, if any, the manufacturer allows on the exterior.
- Mesh and nozzle: Use only permitted tools and avoid pushing debris inward.
- Contacts and ports: Keep them dry unless the official instructions say otherwise.
For example, Bose’s instructions allow water and a small amount of detergent for detachable tips, while Sony’s guidance for WF-1000XM4 foam tips says not to use water, alcohol, or chemicals. Do not transfer either procedure to another brand or tip type.
How to clean earbuds and removable tips
1. Power down and remove detachable tips only if allowed
Turn off the earbuds and remove the tips only if the instructions for your model permit it. Keep the tips separate from the electronic earbuds while cleaning. Tip-care rules vary: Sony’s UK tip guidance warns against washing its referenced tips in water or using a wet wipe. Samsung Australia’s Galaxy Buds guidance says to wash tips in clean water and lightly wipe them with a soft, lint-free dry cloth. Use the instructions matching your own model and material.

2. Clean the shell with the permitted method
Use a soft, lint-free cloth and the cleaning method specified for the earbud body. Apple says to wipe contaminated AirPods with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water, then dry them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Bose recommends a small dab of water on a lint-free cloth for the exterior while keeping openings and ports dry. Samsung’s US guidance says not to use liquids such as alcohol or soapy water on Galaxy earbuds. Do not submerge earbuds or hold them under running water. 3. Remove debris from mesh and nozzles gently
Use a brush or swab only where the instructions for your model permit it. Apple specifies a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush and a particular micellar-water and distilled-water procedure for designated mesh areas on the AirPods models covered by its page; that procedure is not a general method for all earbuds or all AirPods surfaces. Samsung describes a cotton swab or dry brush for specified areas. Bose recommends wiping a nozzle with a soft, dry cotton swab and says not to insert cleaning tools into it.

Do not use needles or other sharp objects, abrasive materials, or force. Avoid pushing wax into the mesh or nozzle. Consult the relevant instructions from Apple, Samsung UK, and Bose.
4. Keep contacts and ports dry
For charging contacts and sensors, use only the method specified by the maker. Samsung’s US instructions describe using a cotton swab on contacts and sensors. Bose recommends a dry cotton swab for contacts and warns against liquid in the charging port. Do not apply the shell-cleaning method to contacts or ports.

5. Let every part dry before reassembly or charging
Dry the tips and earbuds completely before putting them back together or charging. Bose says detachable tips must be completely dry before reattachment; Samsung Australia recommends wiping tips dry. Apple specifies at least two hours of drying after the AirPods procedures described on its page. That minimum applies to the Apple procedure, not every brand or cleaning method. Follow your model’s instructions and ensure all parts are dry.
What not to use
Avoid treating household cleaners or generic earbud-cleaning kits as universally safe. In particular, do not use alcohol, soap, compressed air, sharp tools, or abrasive materials unless the instructions for the exact model and part explicitly permit the method. Samsung Australia says: “Do not use soap, cleaning agents, abrasive materials, other chemicals, or compressed air when cleaning your Galaxy Buds, and do not clean it with ultrasonic waves or external heat sources.” That warning applies to the Galaxy Buds guidance on Samsung Australia’s page; follow the separate instructions for other products.

Routine cleaning does not normally require replacing a tip. If one is damaged, look for a replacement made for the exact earbud model and material. Sony says damaged tips covered by its guidance may be purchased separately; Apple’s AirPods instructions also discuss replacement when parts are damaged.
