Higher elevation still often means less drought stress, but it is no longer a dependable buffer. A four-decade study of Swiss protective forests found that the difference in drought resilience across altitude belts has weakened, while low-elevation decline has become more pronounced. It did not find that every high-elevation forest is now equally vulnerable.

What the Swiss study found

In a study published October 1, 2026, Estelle Noyer, Luuk Dorren, Barbara Allgaier Leuch, and Christine Moos analyzed Swiss National Forest Inventory data spanning four decades and five altitude belts. They examined stand demographics alongside satellite-derived Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), which they used as a proxy for canopy moisture response during and after extreme drought events.

The study distinguishes two related measures. Its drought stress index (DSI) estimates moisture stress; NDMI-based measures describe canopy resistance during drought, recovery afterward, and overall resilience. DSI generally remained lower at higher elevations, but the separation between altitude belts weakened over time. Among stands already classified as declining, the researchers detected no altitude-related difference in canopy resilience.

The decline trend was clearest in the lowest, colline belt: the share of declining stands rose from 11.1% in the first compared inventory period to 30.4% in the latest. Among growing stands, average relative net stem-density increment fell from 2.84% to 1.92% across those same compared periods. These percentages describe the study’s Swiss sample, not all forests in Switzerland or elsewhere.

Drought reached stands across the elevation gradient

The researchers identified major drought episodes in 2003, 2006, 2015, 2018, and 2022. Each affected more than 30% of the studied stands, including stands in the highest subalpine belt. The pattern is evidence that high altitude did not exclude forests from severe drought episodes; it is not evidence that every belt experienced the same level of damage.

The authors summarize the weakening buffer this way: “The historical advantage of higher altitudes against drought stress is diminishing, suggesting a convergence of acclimation levels where drought stress thresholds are increasingly exceeded across all belts, regardless of altitude.” This describes a change in the study’s measured pattern, not a claim that altitude has ceased to matter everywhere.

Why elevation is a weaker drought buffer

Historically, cooler conditions at higher elevations could limit moisture stress compared with warmer lowlands. But elevation is not a shield when drought affects stands across the gradient. The Swiss findings show that drought episodes reached subalpine stands and that the difference in drought response by altitude narrowed over the study period. They do not establish a single cause for that narrowing or isolate climate change as the only driver.

Forest drought impacts also depend on stand density, species composition, forest history, and other stressors. Drought can interact with insects and local conditions, so two forests at similar elevations may respond differently. A weakening average elevation advantage should therefore be read as a warning against assuming that altitude alone guarantees resilience—not as a forecast that all mountain forests will fail in the same way.

How the findings compare with other forests

Evidence from other mountain forests helps show why elevation patterns should be interpreted within their region and measured outcome. The studies below do not measure the same thing, so their results are context rather than a direct comparison with Swiss canopy resilience.

Study and setting What was measured Finding and scope
Noyer et al. (2026), Swiss protective forests Canopy moisture response and stand demographic measures across altitude belts and inventory periods The elevation-related resilience advantage weakened. Declining stands showed no detected altitude-related resilience difference; low-elevation decline was the most consistent trend.
Fettig et al. (2019), central and southern Sierra Nevada Tree mortality in sampled plots following drought 48.9% of sampled trees died between 2014 and 2017. Mortality was 60.4% in the study’s low-elevation band and 46.1% in its high-elevation band; these are study-plot results, not a universal elevation gradient.
Restaino et al. (2019), Sierra Nevada forests Tree mortality in relation to forest structure, climate, and bark beetles Mortality was greater in climatically drier areas, and drought conditions interacted with stand density and bark beetles. The findings are specific to the region and study period.
“Run to the hills” (2021), study system described by the authors Forest growth responsiveness to drought The study reported increasing drought responsiveness of growth at higher elevations in its system. This supports the possibility that high-elevation forests can become more drought-sensitive, but it is not the same finding or ecosystem as the Swiss study.

A separate analysis of long-term Sierra Nevada plots found that climatic water deficit best predicted low-elevation mortality, while at high elevations models based on deficit and temperature were harder to distinguish. Together, the Sierra Nevada studies show that mortality, growth response, and canopy moisture resilience can reveal different aspects of drought vulnerability; none supplies a universal rule for how risk changes with altitude.

What the results mean for protective forests

Swiss protective forests help reduce natural-hazard risks, including avalanches, rockfall, landslides, and sediment transport. Noyer and colleagues warn that continued reductions in stand basal area and regeneration could weaken that protective function over time. Their management recommendations include maintaining sufficient stem density, supporting structurally diverse and multilayered stands, and encouraging drought-tolerant tree cohorts, particularly at low and intermediate elevations where decline trends were more pronounced.

These are recommendations to adapt management to local conditions, not a one-size-fits-all prescription. Species, existing forest structure, and the hazards a stand is expected to mitigate all matter. In Sierra Nevada research, treated stands had lower density, and ponderosa pine individual mortality probability was lower in treated than untreated stands. That result is specific to the region, species, treatment history, and drought episode; it does not establish that the same intervention should be applied to Swiss protective forests.

What the study cannot settle

NDMI is a satellite proxy for canopy moisture, not a direct measurement of soil water or a complete measure of the lasting effects of multi-year drought. The Swiss authors also could not separate net stem-density change into mortality and recruitment, did not model species-specific responses, and lacked topographic correction in the satellite processing. They identify species composition and regeneration across elevation as areas needing further investigation.

A recent structural shift toward growth by smaller trees appeared only among declining high-elevation stands and only in the latest periods. The authors leave open whether this is the beginning of a durable recovery pathway or a delayed stage of decline. It is not established evidence that those forests have adapted.

Are mountain forests becoming more vulnerable to drought?

The Swiss study supports a careful answer: higher elevation is a less reliable buffer than it once appeared to be in these protective forests, and severe drought has affected stands from lowland to subalpine belts. The long-term increase in decline was most consistent at low elevation, while higher-elevation responses varied. The result argues for assessing each forest’s condition and context rather than treating altitude as a guarantee of safety.
