Neither Google Maps nor Apple Maps is the best choice for everyone. Google Maps is a strong pick if you rely on place discovery, reviews, photos and listed traffic-based rerouting. Apple Maps suits iPhone users who value Apple-device integration, lane guidance, cycling details and Apple’s stated approach to limiting identity-linked map data. For transit, offline use or a particular route, compare what each app offers where you actually travel.
At a glance
| Everyday need | Google Maps | Apple Maps |

| Driving | Lists live-traffic rerouting and updates about incidents and road closures. Google Maps iOS listing | Lists lane guidance, speed limits, incidents, and speed- and red-light-camera alerts. Apple Maps US App Store listing |
| Transit | Lists transit updates and ride-share options; availability varies by place. Google Maps iOS listing | Lists real-time updates for buses, trains and ferries; availability varies by place. Apple Maps US App Store listing |
| Offline use | Confirms offline maps, but the cited listing does not specify offline directions by travel mode. Google Maps iOS listing | Lists offline directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit. Apple Maps US App Store listing |

These are listed capabilities, not a head-to-head test of route accuracy, ETAs or local coverage. Both companies warn that feature availability depends on location. The listings are for their iOS apps; feature availability can also depend on device, region and software version.
Choose based on how you navigate
Driving
Consider Google Maps if traffic conditions, rerouting and updates about incidents or closures are your priority. Consider Apple Maps if you prefer its listed lane guidance, speed-limit information and camera alerts. Those descriptions do not establish that either app will give better directions or a faster ETA on every road; local map and traffic data matter.
Transit
Both apps list transit support, but a global feature list cannot tell you which has better schedules or live updates for your commute. Search the same journey in both apps in your city, including the time you expect to travel. Check whether the routes, departure times and service alerts match what the local transit agency provides.

Cycling and walking
Apple’s listing specifies offline directions for cycling and walking, and its product page highlights cycling guidance and route details such as elevation. Google’s listing confirms offline maps, but does not spell out the same mode-by-mode offline directions in the cited details. If you need navigation without a reliable connection, check the exact mode and area in each app before setting out.
Finding places
Google Maps has the clearer fit if you often use map search to choose where to go. Its iOS listing describes local-business information, reviews, photos, busy-time details and reservations. Google says, as a product-listing claim, that “500 million users contribute and keep the map up to date each year.” That is not an independent audit or a comparative measure of map accuracy.

Offline maps: check the mode, not just the download
Offline support is not necessarily identical between the apps. Apple’s US App Store listing names offline directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit. Google’s listing confirms offline maps but does not specify the same set of offline direction modes. Before traveling through an area with poor reception, download the map area and check whether the directions you need remain available offline. Do not assume that downloading an area guarantees live traffic, current transit departures or every online feature.
Privacy: compare the disclosures, not slogans
Apple describes Maps data sent from a device as using rotating random identifiers rather than an Apple Account, along with location fuzzing and on-device personalization. Its legal disclosure, dated September 14, 2026, also says a navigation request sends the origin or current location if authorized, the destination, transport mode and a temporary random identifier. Apple’s stated design is not the same as saying that no location or route data is sent.

Google says navigation data includes GPS location, route details and sensor data, used to provide traffic conditions, disruptions and faster alternate routes. It also says some Maps data, including searches for directions, may be associated with a Google Account. Google’s Help page explains: “Navigation data has always helped—and continues to help—Google Maps provide real-time features, such as traffic conditions, disruptions and the ability to find the fastest route.” These are each company’s own disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.

A practical way to decide
- Start with your main use. Decide whether your everyday need is driving, transit, cycling, walking or finding places to visit.
- Test the routes that matter. Search your regular commute and a few common destinations in both apps. For transit, compare the actual departure times and service information for your city.
- Check offline needs. If you travel where reception is unreliable, download the relevant area and verify directions for your mode before leaving.
- Weigh device fit and privacy preferences. Consider how well Apple Maps fits your Apple devices and car setup, and read each service’s disclosures if the handling of location and route data affects your choice.
- Keep both if their strengths differ. Using one app as your usual navigator and the other for local discovery or a second route check is reasonable; you do not have to make a permanent, all-or-nothing switch.
Apple describes Maps integration with CarPlay and in-car dashboards on its Maps product page. If you navigate using a phone in a car without an integrated display, a phone mount can make the screen easier to see; neither app requires one.
