Turn design feedback into a task by anchoring it to a specific part of the design, stating the user goal or objective at stake, and writing the next step plus its reason. Then classify the comment as ready to do, needing a decision, or needing clarification. This keeps unresolved opinions from becoming unexamined change requests.
Start with the objective, not the comment
Before a critique, make clear what the design is meant to achieve, who it serves, and which scenario the discussion covers. A critique is an assessment of whether a design meets its objectives; shared scope helps keep feedback focused on that question rather than personal preference. Nielsen Norman Group recommends establishing objectives and framing critique as a discussion, not a set of commands: Design Critiques: Encourage a Positive Culture to Improve Products.
When a comment arrives, connect it to the objective or user need it may affect. “This is too red” expresses a reaction, but by itself does not explain whether the color harms comprehension, accessibility, hierarchy, or anything else. Ask what goal the color is supposed to serve and what concern the reviewer sees.
Turn each comment into a task or an open question
A useful task tells the team where to look, what concern to investigate, and why it matters. If the evidence is not sufficient to prescribe a change, make the next step an investigation or decision rather than pretending the solution is settled. Use this task-writing template
- Location: Which screen, component, content, flow, or interaction is involved?
- Observation: What is happening, or what concern did the reviewer raise?
- Goal or impact: Which user need, scenario, or design objective could be affected?
- Next step: What should the team inspect, decide, or change?
- Reason or evidence: Why is this worth addressing? What evidence or unanswered question supports the next step?
- Disposition: Is it ready to do, does it need persuasion or a decision, or does it need clarification?
- Owner and follow-up: Who will take the next step, and where will the result or decision be recorded?
This is a practical synthesis of professional guidance, not a validated formula. Keep uncertainty visible: a question is more useful than a falsely certain implementation instruction when the underlying issue is not yet understood.
Example: “The page feels busy”
Raw comment: “The page feels busy.”
Actionable follow-up: “On the account overview, several secondary panels appear to compete with the payment action. Check whether users can find that action easily in the primary account scenario; if not, propose a hierarchy that gives it clearer emphasis.”

The revised version names the location, concern, user task, and a testable next step. It does not assume that a particular redesign has already been proven right.
Triage before assigning implementation
Not every comment is an approved change. Sort feedback by how ready it is to act on and whether a decision or missing context stands in the way. Nielsen Norman Group describes three useful working categories in Derailed Design Critiques: Tactics for Getting Back on Track.

These are triage categories, not competing solutions. For example, a reviewer’s preference may belong in “To persuade” until the team can assess it against the objective; a vague reaction may belong in “To clarify” before anyone writes a change request.

Put critique notes, owners, decisions, and action items somewhere the team can find and revisit. A shared record helps preserve why a task exists and prevents a comment from being detached from the goal it was meant to serve. After the work, connect the specific update to the feedback that prompted it. If the team does not adopt a suggestion, record the reason rather than leaving the reviewer to guess whether it was missed or considered.
