Sony’s newly announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is an optional AI-upscaling graphics feature for standard PlayStation 5. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel to add detail and improve image stability, but it has not published technical specifications or independent performance results. The first named games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What is QSSR on PS5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announced AI-upscaling technology for standard PS5. It is presented as an additional graphics option in supported games, not a system-wide switch that automatically changes every PS5 game.
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for PS5. Its Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D, Daniel Craig, says: “PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.” This is Sony’s description of the technology, not a quantified comparison or independent test result.
How does AI upscaling work?
In broad terms, an upscaler takes a game image and uses processing to produce a higher-resolution-looking result. Sony says QSSR’s neural network analyzes the image pixel by pixel and reconstructs detail as it upscales. Sony also says the network is streamlined and the implementation hand-tuned to fit PS5 performance constraints.

The announcement does not explain QSSR’s model architecture or specify the resolution a game renders at before upscaling or the resolution of the final output. It also does not publish a per-game frame-rate impact, latency figure, or benchmark. Those details may vary by game and graphics option; they cannot be inferred from the announcement.
What could QSSR improve?
Fine image detail
Sony’s stated aim is to recover or present more detail in the upscaled image. Whether a particular game looks sharper will depend on its implementation and scene. The announcement includes no measured comparison showing how much detail QSSR adds.

Image stability
Sony also names image stability as a target. In practice, a player assessing this claim could look for shimmering or flickering in fine details, particularly when objects or the camera move. Sony has not published quantified reductions in those artifacts, so this remains an intended benefit rather than a demonstrated result in the announcement.
Frame rate and performance
QSSR is designed to fit PS5 performance constraints, but that does not establish a frame-rate increase or guarantee that enabling it will improve performance. Sony has not reported title-specific frame rates or explained whether a game trades rendering resolution, image quality, or other settings when QSSR is selected. Check each game’s graphics options and official patch notes for what its QSSR mode actually changes.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but developer availability is not a guarantee that every game will add support. The announcement does not provide a complete support list.
Is QSSR the same as PSSR on PS5 Pro?
No. Sony distinguishes QSSR, its new performance tier for standard PS5, from PSSR, which it calls the gold standard on PS5 Pro. That is Sony’s positioning. Its announcement does not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison or numerical benchmark showing how the two technologies differ in image quality or performance.

How to judge QSSR in a supported game
To assess the effect in a specific title, compare the same scene with QSSR enabled and disabled, where the game provides that option. Keep other graphics settings and display conditions consistent; otherwise, a difference may come from another setting rather than QSSR.

- Use the same scene and camera position for both comparisons.
- Inspect static fine details, then watch the same details while the camera or objects move.
- Look for changes in visible detail, shimmering or flicker, and image stability.
- Observe frame-rate behavior separately; do not assume that a sharper image means a higher frame rate.
This comparison can help evaluate what QSSR does in that game and setup, but it is not a substitute for controlled testing across titles.

What Sony has not established
- The internal rendering and output resolutions used by QSSR games.
- A numerical image-quality gain or measured reduction in shimmer, flicker, or other artifacts.
- The frame-rate or latency effect in any specific game.
- A complete list of supported games or confirmation that all PS5 games will adopt QSSR.
- A measured quality or performance comparison between QSSR and PS5 Pro’s PSSR.
