There is no universal winner. Phone navigation and connected-car services can both send location and route information to a provider. An automaker’s connected service may also handle vehicle status or driving data. Which shares less depends on the exact app, car, features, account settings, and what you mean by “less”: less sent, less linked to your identity, less retained, or less passed to other parties.
What counts as “sharing less”?
A navigation provider receiving data is not the same thing as selling it or disclosing it to another company. Nor does data that is not linked to a named account mean that it was never collected. To compare services fairly, separate four questions:
- Collection: What information reaches the app or service provider?
- Account linkage: Is it associated with a named account, vehicle, or a rotating identifier?
- Retention: How long is it kept, and is it deleted after processing?
- Onward sharing: Does the provider disclose it to other parties, and for what purpose?
The official policies below describe different products and purposes, not a common measurement of data volume. They cannot support a reliable industry-wide ranking.
How the named options compare
| Service | Documented data | Account and control details |
|---|---|---|
| Automaker connected services: Toyota U.S. example | Toyota lists vehicle location, vehicle status, driving data and, on equipped profile systems, saved locations and map search and routing history. | Toyota describes Vehicle Connectivity Consent in its app and a Privacy Portal. Its notice says declining consent disables Connected Services and data transmission under the conditions it describes. Scope and availability vary; see Toyota’s Connected Services Privacy Notice. |
| Phone navigation: Apple Maps | Apple lists authorized device location, map areas viewed, searches and interactions, and route-request details such as origin, current location, destination and transport mode. | Apple says many personalized features are generated on-device and describes rotating identifiers for usage metrics. Some route geometry is still sent to Apple; CarPlay Route Sharing is a separate optional flow. Details are in Apple’s Maps privacy disclosure. |
| Phone navigation: Google Maps | Google lists GPS location, route details and device sensor data during navigation. | Google says navigation data supports real-time functions and that some other Maps activity may be associated with a Google Account when history is on. Location permission and history controls are separate; see Google’s navigation-data explanation and Maps history help. |
| Navigation built into a compatible car: Google Maps example | Google lists GPS location, routes, road descriptions, vehicle sensor status and certain connected-device sensors. Shared EV data may include battery and vehicle information. | Google describes a Privacy center and controls for Maps built into cars. Availability depends on manufacturer, region and data plan. See Google’s in-car Maps data-sharing help. |
These are not interchangeable setups. “In-car navigation” might mean a phone app projected to the dashboard, a map app built into a compatible car, or an automaker’s own connected service. Each can have different providers, settings and privacy terms.

What each policy says in practice
Toyota connected services: location plus vehicle information
Toyota’s Connected Services Privacy Notice, updated July 1, 2026, applies to specified U.S. territory and covered Toyota Connected Services, including Toyota app use. It identifies vehicle make, model, year and VIN-linked information; latitude and longitude; and status details such as doors, windows, odometer, oil life, fuel economy, trip distance and distance to empty. Driving data can include acceleration, speed, travel direction, steering, braking and vehicle sensor readings. On vehicles with user profiles, the notice also describes linked music preferences, saved locations and map search and routing history. Toyota says interior-image data for the described features remains stored on the vehicle and is not transmitted to Toyota.
Those disclosures are specific to Toyota’s covered services and equipped vehicles, not a rule for all automakers. The notice has territorial limits and exclusions, including qualifications for rental vehicles. Toyota says users can manage Vehicle Connectivity Consent and transmission preferences in the Toyota app’s Privacy Portal. It says declining consent turns off vehicle data transmission and Connected Services. If a user does nothing, Toyota says it continues using non-precise location, driving and vehicle-health data for internal research and analysis while Connected Services are unavailable. Read the notice for the exact scope and conditions.

Apple Maps: route data can be sent even when features run on-device
Apple’s Maps disclosure, dated September 14, 2026, says information sent to Apple can include request time, device and software details, language, authorized device location, visible map boundaries and Maps interactions such as search terms and places viewed. Navigation requests can include origin and current location, destination, transport mode—including CarPlay status—and a random identifier for the navigation session.
Apple says individual usage metrics use an identifier that rotates multiple times per hour and is not tied to an Apple Account. It also says many personalized features are created using data generated on-device. These protections do not mean that Maps sends no location or route data. If Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations are enabled, Apple says route geometry is sent to Apple; it takes steps within 24 hours so it does not learn that submitted geometry was a preferred route or predicted destination.

CarPlay Route Sharing is another distinct choice. When enabled, Apple says it sends the route origin and current location, destination and route line to the vehicle for navigation and driver-assistance support. Apple says this information is not tied to the Apple Account, but the vehicle’s use is governed by the vehicle privacy policy. Apple identifies a setting to disable Route Sharing for a vehicle.
Google Maps on a phone: live navigation and saved history are separate
Google says its iPhone and iPad navigation feature collects GPS location, route details and device sensor data while navigating. Collection for turn-by-turn navigation starts shortly after you tap Start and stops after arrival or when navigation is stopped. Google says data used for map updates is not associated with your Google Account or device, while other Maps activity may be account-associated.

In particular, Google’s Maps history help says searches and directions may be saved to an account when Search Services History is on. The settings are being updated, so check the current app and account privacy controls rather than relying on an old menu path. Live navigation collection and account history are separate issues: changing history controls does not, by itself, establish that live routing sends no data.
Google Maps built into a car: a different service from phone projection
Google’s in-car guidance applies to Maps built into a compatible car—not every automaker service or phone-projection setup. Google lists GPS location, routes, road descriptions such as signs or lane markings, vehicle sensor status such as wiper state, and data from connected devices such as a phone barometer or compatible vehicle wheel speed. For map updates, Google says trip and sensor data is not associated with a Google Account or vehicle; it uses a securely generated identifier that resets regularly, and data needed for Maps is deleted after processing. Google separately says shared EV data may be saved on its servers and used for range and charging features.

Availability and functionality depend on the vehicle maker, region and data plan. The in-car Privacy center and location permissions offer controls, but changing settings can limit functions. On some configurations, offline-map choices may affect safety-related driver-assistance features; check the owner’s manual before changing them.
Infotainment can involve additional providers
A phone connected to a car, an embedded app and a downloaded app can create different data flows. Ford’s U.S. privacy notice explains that infotainment may connect a phone, display information, use a device’s cellular connection, or support embedded and downloaded apps. It also says third-party services connected to Ford products are governed by those providers’ terms and privacy policies for information disclosed to them. Ford recommends a master or factory reset, or connectivity reset, when a vehicle changes hands because preferences and imported information may remain stored. Controls and indicators vary by vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to reduce data flows for your setup
- Identify what is actually providing navigation. Check whether you use an automaker companion service, embedded Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or multiple services. Consult the applicable service notice and the car’s manual; a projected phone app is not the same as the car’s built-in service.
- Review phone location access. Check the location permission for the specific navigation app and consider allowing access only while using it, if that setting is available and meets your needs. Google warns that denying location disables real-time features such as turn-by-turn navigation.
- Review account history separately. Check Maps history and Timeline controls in your current Google account and app settings. Turning off saved history addresses account activity, not necessarily every data flow needed for live navigation.
- Review Apple Maps options. Check location access, Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations, and CarPlay Route Sharing if you want to reduce those particular data flows. Turning off a feature may change its functionality.
- Check the vehicle’s own controls. Review connected-service consent, location and trip sharing, driver profiles and third-party app permissions. Settings and consequences vary by model; do not disable safety-related features without checking the manual.
- Before selling or sharing a car, remove your profile and reset stored data. Follow the manufacturer’s handover or reset procedure, and let other drivers know when sharing is active. Ford specifically recommends a reset when relinquishing a connected vehicle.
Which should you choose?
If your priority is avoiding transmission of vehicle-specific data, a phone navigation app may avoid the additional vehicle-status and driving-data categories documented for Toyota’s connected service—but it still sends some location and route information. That is a comparison of these documented examples, not a guarantee about every phone app or car.
If your priority is keeping activity away from a named account, compare the exact account-linkage and history controls: Apple describes rotating identifiers and on-device features, Google distinguishes map-update data from activity that may be saved to an account, and Google’s in-car Maps documentation describes a resetting identifier. None of those distinctions proves that a provider receives no data.
