Choose FireRed or LeafGreen based on the version-exclusive Pokémon you want to catch. The core Kanto remake adventure is shared, so neither is an objectively better game on the evidence available here. If you want a current release, both are digital Nintendo Switch games and also playable on Nintendo Switch 2; if you want the original 2004 handheld format, you’ll need a Game Boy Advance cartridge.
What is different between FireRed and LeafGreen?
The main distinction is which Pokémon are exclusive to each version. That can affect what you can catch in a solo playthrough and which game is a better fit for trading with friends. The official descriptions cited below do not provide complete exclusive-Pokémon lists, so this guide cannot reliably name every version-specific species or rank one list as better.
Before choosing, check a current, reliable version-exclusives list and start with the Pokémon you most want to obtain. If you plan to trade, ask which version your friends have and whether they are willing to exchange the Pokémon you need.
What do both games have in common?
Both games retell the Kanto adventure associated with Pokémon Red and Blue. Nintendo describes the Switch releases as remakes of the 2004 Game Boy Advance games, which themselves revisit the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, released in Japan in 1996. Nintendo says players can encounter the original 151 Pokémon in the Switch editions. Nintendo’s February 2026 announcement also notes features from the Game Boy Advance era, including abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and choosing the player character’s gender.

Which version should you choose?
Choose by the Pokémon you want
This is the most direct way to decide. Find a complete FireRed-versus-LeafGreen exclusives list, identify which version contains the Pokémon you care about, and choose that one. If you cannot trade and a particular exclusive matters to you, make sure it is obtainable in your chosen game before buying.
Choose by release format
The current Switch editions are digital-only. Nintendo announced them as separate games for Nintendo Switch, with compatibility on Nintendo Switch 2. If you specifically want to play the original handheld release, look for a used Game Boy Advance cartridge instead. Verify the seller, cartridge authenticity, region, and language before purchasing; a used cartridge is a legacy product, not the current Switch edition.

Choose by multiplayer plans
The Switch announcement describes local multiplayer and says additional games and systems are required. Nintendo says the Switch versions do not require the Game Link Cable used in 2004. The original Game Boy Advance games had a different arrangement: The Pokémon Company says a wireless adapter shipped with those titles. Check the requirements for the edition you intend to play rather than assuming the two formats connect in the same way. The Pokémon Company’s announcement describes the original releases and adapter.
Check language and regional price before buying
At its February 20, 2026 announcement, Nintendo listed a suggested retail price of $19.99 USD and English, French, and Spanish versions. The games are sold separately, and Nintendo said language versions cannot be changed in-game; its French and Spanish editions are EU French and EU Spanish. Price, availability, and language offerings can vary by region and may change, so confirm the language and current price on your regional Nintendo storefront before purchase.

How to buy the right edition
- Decide which format you want. Choose the digital Switch release for current hardware, or a used Game Boy Advance cartridge for the original handheld version.
- Check the exclusives. Compare a complete, current list against the Pokémon you want; do not rely on an incomplete list if a particular species is essential.
- Confirm multiplayer needs. For Switch local multiplayer, check the additional games and systems required. For the original GBA games, check the wireless-adapter setup.
- Verify the regional listing. Confirm the edition, language, price, and platform on the official store—or, for used GBA media, verify the seller, region, language, and authenticity.
Pokémon HOME availability
The Pokémon Company announced that the Switch versions would link with Pokémon HOME beginning in October 2026. That date alone does not establish whether the feature is currently live or what transfer restrictions apply. Check the latest official Pokémon HOME instructions before relying on compatibility for a purchase or transfer plan. The Pokémon Company’s announcement is the source for the stated timing.
