Not through ordinary gameplay in the original Game Boy Advance versions. FireRed and LeafGreen have no standard Celebi encounter or in-game quest that unlocks one. Historically, the legitimate alternatives involved an external event distribution or a region-specific Japanese Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc. Nintendo has also announced a separate Celebi Mystery Gift for the Switch releases, tied to Pokémon HOME Pokédex completion.
Can you catch Celebi in the original FireRed or LeafGreen?
No. Celebi does not appear as a normal wild Pokémon or as the reward for completing the story, the National Pokédex, or the Sevii Islands. The game-location reference lists Celebi as unavailable through standard play in FireRed and LeafGreen, with external distribution routes as the exceptions: Smogon University’s FireRed and LeafGreen Pokémon Locations reference.
That means there is no hidden in-game location or quest to find. Trading can move a Celebi into a GBA game if you already have one available, but it does not make Celebi obtainable by playing FireRed or LeafGreen alone.
What are the legitimate ways to obtain one?
| Route | What it involves | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Historical event distribution | An external distribution made Celebi available to eligible players. | It is not a standard encounter in FireRed or LeafGreen; availability depended on the event. |
| Japanese Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc | The Japanese disc can award Celebi after the associated Japanese Colosseum save has purified all 48 Shadow Pokémon. See the Colosseum mechanics guide and Bonus Disc mechanics reference. | Requires the Japanese disc and compatible Japanese game, save, and transfer setup; owning the disc alone is not enough. |
| Nintendo Switch release | Nintendo says completing the Pokédex for the respective FireRed or LeafGreen game in Pokémon HOME can earn a special Celebi Mystery Gift. | This is a Switch-release condition, not a GBA encounter. Nintendo’s listing says HOME support begins in October 2026. |
How the Japanese Colosseum Bonus Disc route works
This is a demanding legacy route for collectors with compatible Japanese equipment. The Bonus Disc is an external distribution medium: Celebi is awarded through the disc’s Relic Stone option after all 48 Shadow Pokémon have been purified in the associated Japanese Pokémon Colosseum save. Simply having the disc, or using a Colosseum disc from another region, does not satisfy the stated requirements.

Moving Pokémon between Colosseum and a GBA game also requires a compatible GameCube–Game Boy Advance transfer arrangement. The Smogon Pokémon Transfer Guide explains the transfer context. A cable by itself does not unlock Celebi; it only supports compatible transfers.

Nintendo’s official US store listing says Pokémon HOME support for the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen begins in October 2026. It also says that completing the Pokédex for the respective game in Pokémon HOME can earn a special Celebi as a Mystery Gift.
This is distinct from the original GBA games: the announced requirement is Pokédex completion in HOME for the relevant Switch release, not finding Celebi in the game world. Since Nintendo describes HOME support as beginning in October 2026, the listing alone does not establish that the gift is claimable before support begins.
