Estimate the watt-hours your devices will use during the time they need to run, then account for conversion losses and a sensible reserve. After that, check the station’s continuous and surge output: battery capacity determines how long it may run loads, while output ratings determine whether it can run them at all.
1. Define what the power station must run
Start with a specific use case: an outage, a camping trip, or another period away from mains power. List essential devices, how many hours each must operate, and which will run at the same time. Leave out loads you can switch off; sizing for an unlikely combination can lead to buying more capacity than you need.
For use across multiple days, also decide when the station can be recharged. Solar output varies with location, season, and weather, so do not assume a panel will replace a fixed amount of energy every day. Victron’s discussion of energy use and recharging is written for RV battery banks, but the planning principle applies; its battery-bank-specific rules should not automatically be applied to an integrated portable station: Victron Energy’s RV battery-bank guide.

For each device, find its wattage on the nameplate or in the manual, then estimate how many hours it will actually draw power. Use realistic average consumption for appliances that cycle on and off. A refrigerator’s compressor, for example, may not draw its rated running power for every hour it is plugged in.

Include chargers and, where relevant, the station’s inverter standby use. If you do not know a device’s average draw or duty cycle, treat the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime. Victron’s guidance explains the importance of load patterns and inverter consumption: Victron Energy’s RV battery-bank guide.
3. Convert the load list to watt-hours
Watt-hours (Wh) estimate energy used over time. Multiply each device’s watts by its hours of use, then add the results for the full period you need to cover:

Energy (Wh) = power (W) × operating time (hours)
If you need power for several days, first calculate a typical day’s total in Wh, then multiply by the number of days between meaningful recharges. This is a planning total; it does not account for losses or prove that a station can deliver the required output.
Example: one 100 W device
Anker SOLIX illustrates the arithmetic with a 100 W load used for 5 hours: 100 W × 5 h = 500 Wh. Its guide then adds a 20% planning buffer, giving 500 Wh × 1.2 = 600 Wh. That is Anker’s simplified example, not a promise that any station labeled 600 Wh will deliver 600 Wh to an AC appliance. Check the particular model’s usable energy and output specifications. Anker SOLIX’s portable power station sizing guide.

Example: a daily RV load list
Victron’s RV article calculates a separate example: a fridge at 100 W for 12 hours (1,200 Wh), lighting at 20 W for 5 hours (100 Wh), a water pump at 60 W for 1 hour (60 Wh), and a roof fan at 30 W for 8 hours (240 Wh). The total is 1,600 Wh per day. This is an RV example, not a generic load profile or a portable-station recommendation. Victron Energy’s RV battery-bank guide.
4. Allow for losses and uncertainty
The energy available at an AC outlet can be less than the station’s rated battery capacity because power conversion uses energy. Prefer the model’s stated usable energy or efficiency information when available. Add a clearly identified planning reserve for uncertain usage rather than assuming the rated Wh figure will all reach your devices.

There is no single loss percentage that applies to every station and load. Anker uses a 20% buffer in its simplified portable-station example. Victron’s advice is for a different context—RV battery banks—and discusses inverter efficiency with simplifications that vary by inverter size. Treat those as source-specific guidance, not interchangeable guarantees. Anker SOLIX’s guide; Victron Energy’s guide.
5. Check output power separately from capacity
Watt-hours measure energy capacity; watts measure power at a moment in time. Add the running watts of devices that will operate simultaneously and compare that sum with the station’s continuous output rating. Then check motorized devices, such as compressors, for startup surge and compare that requirement with the station’s surge rating.

A station can have enough Wh for the desired runtime and still fail to start or sustain a device if its output is too low. Anker SOLIX states: “A portable power station can have generous capacity and still fail to run a device if its continuous output rating is too low.” Check the device and station specifications, and consult the manufacturer where startup requirements are unclear. Schneider Electric’s FAQ discusses motor-start demand in the context of named inverter and battery systems, so it is contextual guidance rather than a universal portable-station specification: Schneider Electric’s inverter FAQ. For a portable-station sizing overview, see Anker SOLIX’s guide.
6. Compare stations against the full requirement
Once you have a load estimate, compare candidate stations on the specifications that affect your use case:
- Usable energy (Wh): enough for the estimated energy requirement, including your chosen reserve.
- Continuous output (W): sufficient for the loads expected to run together.
- Surge output (W): sufficient for startup loads, if any.
- Recharge capability: compatible charging inputs and realistic recharge time for your available power sources.
- Expansion support: relevant if the base station falls short of the calculated runtime; confirm battery compatibility with the exact model.
Anker SOLIX offers example capacity bands—300–500 Wh for occasional device charging, 700–1,200 Wh for a weekend away from mains, 1,200–2,000 Wh for regular outage backup, and 2,000 Wh or more for heavy daily reliance. These are the manufacturer’s suggested ranges, not universal sizing rules. Your device list and output needs are a better basis for choosing. Anker SOLIX’s sizing guide.
