Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets Linux tools work with Windows files and network services, and WSL 2 supports some hardware access—but the details depend on the resource, WSL version, and network configuration. Windows drives are commonly available in Linux under /mnt/; Windows can browse Linux distribution files through \wsl$ or \wsl.localhost. GPU access is supported in WSL 2, USB devices require a separate USB/IP setup, and serial-port access is unsupported in WSL 2.
How file access works in both directions
Linux tools accessing Windows files
WSL mounts Windows drives through DrvFS. For example, the Windows C: drive is commonly available at /mnt/c, so a Linux shell can reach a user’s Documents folder at /mnt/c/Users/<user>/Documents. You can use Linux command-line tools on those files without copying them into the Linux distribution.
That access does not make the two filesystems identical. Windows is generally case-insensitive, while Linux is case-sensitive, and permissions are handled differently. WSL permissions can reflect Windows permissions or WSL metadata, depending on configuration. These differences can matter to build tools, scripts, and applications that rely on capitalization or Unix-style permissions. See Microsoft’s guide to working across file systems.
Windows applications accessing Linux files
From Windows, open a distribution’s files through \wsl$ or \wsl.localhost in File Explorer or another Windows application. Windows-side access uses the distribution’s default user context; it is not the same as Windows taking over Linux ownership and permissions.

Where to keep project files
Choose the filesystem based on which operating system’s tools do most of the work. Microsoft recommends keeping a project in the Linux filesystem when Linux tools perform the main operations, for best performance. If the workflow is primarily Windows-based, the Windows filesystem is the natural home. Moving files across the boundary is possible, but repeatedly mixing tools and filesystems can expose the differences in performance and file behavior.
How WSL networking behaves
WSL 2 uses NAT networking by default. In a common development setup, a Windows browser or application can connect to a service running in WSL through localhost. In the reverse direction, a Linux process connecting to a service on Windows may need to use the Windows host IP address when NAT is in use.

Mirrored networking on Windows 11
Windows 11 version 22H2 and later can use mirrored networking, a configurable option set through .wslconfig. Microsoft lists Windows/WSL localhost connectivity, IPv6, multicast, direct LAN access to WSL, and improved VPN compatibility among its benefits. The actual behavior depends on the Windows version and selected mode; firewall rules still govern inbound connections. Microsoft’s WSL networking guide describes the configuration and connection paths.
DNS and proxy settings
On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, DNS tunneling is enabled by default. WSL can also pass Windows proxy settings into Linux when auto proxy is configured. If a connection fails, check the WSL networking mode, Windows firewall rules, VPN behavior, DNS, and proxy configuration rather than assuming that Linux tools lack network access.

What hardware WSL can access
GPU: supported in WSL 2
WSL 2 supports GPU access. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ says, “We have released support for accessing the GPU inside of WSL 2 distributions!” GPU calls use Windows GPU integration, so platform support does not guarantee that every GPU, driver, application, or workload will work. Consult the Microsoft WSL FAQ and the current guidance for the specific workload.
USB: attach devices through USB/IP
USB passthrough is available through the separate, open-source usbipd-win project, which connects USB devices to WSL 2 using USB/IP. Microsoft gives flashing an Arduino and using a smartcard reader as examples. The setup requires a current WSL 2 environment and a supported host architecture; follow the current USB device connection guide for prerequisites and commands.

When a USB device is attached to WSL, Windows cannot use it until it is detached. This is a handoff, not simultaneous access by both operating systems. Compatibility depends on the device and its drivers, so check the current support information for the hardware you need.
Serial ports: not supported in WSL 2
Microsoft’s WSL version comparison lists serial-port access as unsupported in WSL 2. If a workflow depends on a serial port, WSL 2 may not be suitable; consider whether WSL 1 or a different environment meets the need, and verify the device-specific requirements in Microsoft’s WSL version comparison.

Linux-formatted disks: a separate mount workflow
WSL 2 can mount Linux-formatted disks using wsl --mount, subject to Windows and WSL version requirements and administrator access. It cannot mount the active Windows installation disk. The command also is not the way to mount USB flash drives, USB disks, or SD-card readers. Check Microsoft’s Linux disk mounting instructions before connecting or mounting a disk.
Choosing between WSL 1 and WSL 2
WSL 2 uses virtualization and a Linux kernel; WSL 1 uses a different architecture. Microsoft generally recommends WSL 2, but the right choice depends on the workflow rather than a blanket rule.
