An AI aggregator can add another organization—and another set of terms—to the path your prompt or file takes. A privacy setting at the underlying model provider does not tell you what the aggregator does with its own copies.
Is it safe to use an AI aggregator with private information?
There is no blanket answer. Safety depends on what you submit, which organizations handle it, and their applicable policies and contracts. Treat a prompt or uploaded file as potentially crossing more than one service boundary until you have checked the details.
The Federal Trade Commission notes that model-as-a-service providers can receive sensitive personal data and confidential business information through interfaces and APIs. Its staff put the broader point plainly: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” That is general guidance, not a legal conclusion about a particular service or situation. FTC staff guidance, January 2024
Unless a service is approved for sensitive material, do not submit credentials, account or payment numbers, addresses, customer records, unpublished work, or confidential company information. A service’s marketing label or a model provider’s privacy setting is not enough to establish how every party in the data path handles your content.

Can an AI aggregator see my prompts?
Do not assume the aggregator is blind to what you submit. It may need to receive a prompt or file to route a request, and a downstream model provider may also receive the request. Which organizations actually process a given request is service-specific; check the aggregator’s current privacy notice and terms, and the downstream provider’s applicable terms where available.
Look for the named model providers and other subprocessors, what information each receives, and where it is processed. If the documentation does not explain the flow clearly, ask the provider before sending sensitive material.

Do AI aggregators use chats to train models?
There is no basis here to say that every aggregator retains or trains on user content. The relevant question is what each service says it does, and whether its stated controls cover the aggregator, the underlying model provider, or both. A training opt-out in one service does not establish what another organization does with copies it receives.
Check the policy for model training or improvement, other purposes, sharing with providers and subprocessors, and any human review or abuse monitoring. The FTC advises companies to clearly disclose other uses of consumer data and honor their privacy commitments. It also cautions against quietly broadening data use or sharing through retroactive terms changes without clear notice and consent where required. FTC staff guidance, February 2024

How do I stop an AI service from saving my prompts?
You may not be able to prevent storage altogether. First check whether the service offers controls for chat history, model improvement, retention, or deletion; then verify which service the control covers and what exceptions apply. Deletion from a visible chat list does not, by itself, answer how backups, abuse monitoring, or legal obligations affect retention.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT documentation is one provider-specific example, not a rule for aggregators. As described in its Help Center, eligible users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; new conversations then are not used to train OpenAI models, but can remain in chat history. Temporary chats are not used to improve models while temporary, do not appear in history or create memories, and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI also says information sent to a third party through a GPT action is governed by that recipient’s privacy policy, and the recipient may retain it longer than 30 days or use it for other purposes. - Recipients: Which organization receives prompts and files? Which model providers and other subprocessors handle them?
- Purposes and training: Are inputs or outputs used for model training, product improvement, or other purposes? Does an opt-out cover the aggregator, downstream providers, or both?
- Retention and deletion: How long are inputs and outputs stored? What happens after a deletion request, including to backups, abuse-monitoring records, or data kept for legal obligations?
- Human access: Does the service describe human review or monitoring for abuse, and under what circumstances?
- Location and transfers: Where is data processed? What safeguards apply to international transfers?
- Controls and security: What account access protections and administrative controls are available, and how are incidents handled?
- Terms changes: How does the provider notify users about material changes to data use or sharing?

Simple habits that reduce exposure
- Remove unnecessary details. Include only information essential to the request. Replace names, account numbers, addresses, and other identifiers with neutral labels, or use synthetic examples when they still solve the problem.
- Keep secrets out of prompts and files. Do not paste passwords, access tokens, customer records, or confidential documents into a service that has not been approved for that use.
- Check the data path before you submit. Read the aggregator’s notice and terms, identify the provider receiving each request, and check that provider’s applicable terms.
- Use approved work services. Confirm the contract, retention configuration, access controls, and transfer protections with your organization’s privacy or security owner before submitting work information.
- Revisit settings and terms after changes. A provider may change its policies or controls, so review them again when there is a material update or when your use changes.
Removing identifiers can reduce exposure, but it does not guarantee anonymity. Privacy-enhancing technology can limit access in different ways, yet implementation and auditing have limits; treat broad privacy claims as claims to verify, not proof that your content cannot be accessed or used. A VPN, private-browsing window, or account-level training toggle is not a guarantee that the service receiving a prompt will not retain or use it. These tools and settings do not substitute for checking the receiving service’s own terms and data practices.
