Start with the phone and account you use
Compatibility is the first filter. AirTag is designed around Apple’s Find My app and requires an Apple Account and compatible Apple device. SmartTag2 requires Samsung account and SmartThings Find registration, and its crowd-finding network is built around participating Galaxy devices. Chipolo POP offers a choice: configure it with Apple Find My on an iPhone or Google Find Hub on Android. It cannot report through both networks at once.
Will an AirTag work with Android?
AirTag’s finding features are integrated with Apple Find My, so it is not a practical Android tracker. Apple’s current compatibility requirements for the second-generation model are a compatible iPhone on iOS 26 or later or an iPad on iPadOS 26 or later, plus an Apple Account. Check Apple’s AirTag specifications and compatibility details for the applicable device requirements.
Does Galaxy SmartTag2 work with an iPhone?
SmartTag2 is intended for Samsung’s Galaxy and SmartThings Find ecosystem, not as an iPhone-based Find My tracker. Its setup requires a Samsung account. Samsung describes the device and requirements on its Galaxy SmartTag2 product page.

Which tracker can work with both iPhone and Android?
Chipolo POP is the flexible option among these three, but “both” means that you can choose one supported network when setting it up—not that a single POP works across Apple Find My and Google Find Hub at the same time. Chipolo says moving to the other network requires removing or resetting the tracker and reconnecting it through the new platform.
Understand direct Bluetooth range versus remote finding
Bluetooth has a local connection range: it can help your phone communicate directly with a nearby tag. When the tag is outside that connection, remote finding depends on the selected network. Compatible devices belonging to other users may detect the tag and report an approximate location to its owner. Whether that happens depends on nearby participating devices, their compatibility, the network’s operation, and the surroundings.

Samsung states a maximum BLE range of up to 120 metres without obstacles for SmartTag2. That is a manufacturer-stated direct-range figure, not a distance at which a lost item can always be located. Walls, interference, and other obstacles can reduce direct range; crowdsourced finding is a separate mechanism.
A 2025 peer-reviewed study comparing Apple Find My and Google’s Find My Device Network on a small set of routes reported five to six times more location reports from Apple in the tested conditions, along with differences in accuracy and delay. This is evidence from a limited study, not a worldwide network census, a guarantee of recovery, or a direct test of every current tracker. Compare close-range finding features
AirTag: Precision Finding
Apple says the second-generation AirTag’s UWB chip enables Precision Finding from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. Apple also says supported Apple Watch models can use Precision Finding: Series 9 or later, or Ultra 2 or later, running watchOS 26.2.1. These are Apple’s comparisons and compatibility statements, not independent range tests. See Apple’s January 2026 AirTag announcement and its technical specifications.
SmartTag2: Compass View
SmartTag2 supports UWB and Compass View on compatible UWB-equipped Galaxy phones. The phone model matters: not every Galaxy device supports UWB. Samsung also notes that obstacles can affect accuracy, so Compass View should not be treated as a guaranteed precise direction in every environment.

Chipolo POP: ring and companion app
Chipolo’s stated POP features include a loud ring and additional functions in its companion app, such as calling a misplaced phone. The primary location function runs through whichever supported platform network—Apple Find My or Google Find Hub—you select. The cited Chipolo product information does not establish UWB precision finding for POP.

Attachment and form factor
AirTag has no built-in loop, so attaching one to keys or a bag may require a separate holder. Samsung lists optional silicone and rugged cases for SmartTag2. Consider how the tracker will stay attached to the item before choosing; a tracker that is awkward to mount may not be useful for that item.

Battery life and replacement
AirTag and Chipolo POP use replaceable CR2032 batteries. Chipolo states up to 12 months of battery life for POP; actual life depends on use and conditions. Samsung’s 2023 announcement estimates up to 700 days for SmartTag2 in Power Saving Mode—an estimate for that specific mode, not a typical-use promise. Battery claims come from manufacturers rather than independent comparative testing.
Water and dust resistance
Samsung lists SmartTag2 as IP67-rated, while Chipolo lists POP as IP55-rated. These ratings are not interchangeable: they describe different levels of resistance under specified conditions, not a guarantee against all water or dust exposure. Check each manufacturer’s current care guidance for the tracker and any accessory.
Privacy and unwanted tracking
These products are intended to help locate belongings, not to track people without their consent or replace dedicated safety tools. Apple describes AirTag as designed for tracking objects and says it includes protections against unwanted tracking; that is Apple’s characterization, not an independent assessment. Samsung describes Unknown tag alerts for Galaxy users and says SmartThings Find encrypts user data. Anti-stalking alerts are safeguards, not a promise that misuse is impossible.
Make the decision by use case
- Choose AirTag (2nd generation) if you use an iPhone or iPad and want Apple Find My plus Apple’s close-range Precision Finding features. Account for the separate holder that keys may require.
- Choose Galaxy SmartTag2 if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone and want SmartThings Find, with Compass View available only on a compatible UWB Galaxy device.
- Choose Chipolo POP if you want the option of Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, and accept choosing one network at a time and resetting to switch.
- Before buying, check phone and OS compatibility, network usefulness where the item is likely to be, attachment method, battery needs, durability, and current local price.
Apple also offers Share Item Location for temporarily sharing an item’s location with participating third parties such as airlines. In its January 2026 announcement, Apple said it had partnered with more than 50 airlines and relayed SITA figures of a 26 percent reduction in baggage delays and a 90 percent reduction in incidences of truly lost or unrecoverable luggage. Those are statistics attributed to SITA by Apple, not a general recovery guarantee for an individual AirTag owner.
