Choose a paper-feel matte film if you want more grip for Apple Pencil handwriting or drawing and prefer less glare. Choose tempered glass if you want a clear, smooth surface without added texture. Neither type is a proven overall winner for protection, screen fidelity, or Pencil performance: the available sources do not provide comparable independent tests.
How the two types feel with Apple Pencil
Paper-feel matte film
Paper-feel protectors are textured films designed to create more friction under the Pencil. Belkin describes its SCREENFORCE Paper Film as matte PET film, rather than glass, and says the texture gives Apple Pencil more grip and precision. Paperlike describes the textured surface of Paperlike 3 as Nanodots. These are manufacturers’ product descriptions, not results from a head-to-head writing test.
Tempered glass
Tempered glass provides a smooth surface rather than the paper-like texture described by Belkin. It may suit people who prefer the iPad’s slick feel, but the sources reviewed do not directly compare writing results on glass and matte film. Your preferred feel is therefore a personal choice, not a settled performance ranking.
Glare, clarity, and brightness
Matte film is intended to reduce reflections, with a trade-off in how the display looks. Belkin’s SCREENFORCE Paper Film FAQ says, “The matte surface reduces glare, which may give the screen a slightly softer appearance compared to a bare screen or clear protector.” Paperlike says textured surfaces bend light and slightly reduce brightness. Both statements are manufacturer descriptions; no independent comparative measurements are available here.

A clear, smooth glass protector may appeal if you want to retain a glossy appearance, but no source reviewed establishes that tempered glass preserves brightness or clarity better by a measured amount. Consider the matte surface’s glare reduction against its potential softness, rather than assuming either option leaves the display unchanged.
Pencil-tip wear and maintenance
Added texture creates friction, which can contribute to Apple Pencil tip wear. Paperlike explains that “The added resistance that Paperlike creates will generate a small amount of friction between your Apple Pencil tip and your screen,” and says this applies to paper-feel protectors generally. Belkin says its film is designed to minimize tip wear, but no comparative wear test establishes how it performs against other films or glass.

There is no quantified comparison here of tip wear on tempered glass versus matte film. If you choose a textured protector, check the Pencil tip occasionally and replace it if it is visibly worn or no longer works as expected. Paperlike sells replacement tips and says they fit Apple Pencil and some styli with the same tip type, including Logitech Crayon.
What protection can you expect?
Belkin describes its PET film as protection against everyday scratches and scuffs. That product claim does not establish how it compares with tempered glass, and the sources do not provide standardized, comparable impact or scratch tests for either category.

Do not choose by assuming that one category is categorically better at preventing cracks, absorbing impacts, or resisting scratches. Check the specific product’s stated claims and decide whether Pencil feel or a smooth surface matters more to you; the evidence here cannot settle protection performance across the two types.
Check the exact iPad model before buying
Screen size alone is not enough to confirm fit. Match the protector to the iPad’s exact model and generation, including the cutouts and camera placement. Compatibility lists can change, so verify the current product listing before ordering.
