The best Witcher 3 settings for FPS depend chiefly on your output resolution and whether you enable ray tracing. For a practical starting point, choose the resolution and frame-rate range you want, leave ray tracing off if performance is already tight, and tune one setting at a time while checking representative gameplay. That is editorial guidance—not a developer-published benchmark—and no single preset guarantees a particular frame rate on every PC.
What matters most for performance?
Start with resolution and ray tracing before chasing smaller graphics options. CD PROJEKT RED says higher resolution significantly affects FPS, and notes that results can fluctuate with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. Its published requirements are useful reference configurations, not promises for your hardware.
For a rough sense of the tradeoffs, the developer’s 2024 PC requirements table paired 1080p High with ray tracing off, 1440p Ultra with selected ray-tracing features, and 4K Ultra with all ray-tracing features. The two higher tiers indicated DLSS or FSR. These examples describe different configurations; they do not establish how many frames a particular PC will deliver.

Should you turn ray tracing on?
Ray tracing is a choice with a meaningful performance tradeoff, not a setting every player should enable by default. The older official configurations place it at higher tiers: selected effects at 1440p and all listed RT features at 4K, with upscaling indicated in both cases. If your current frame rate is below your acceptable range, test the game with ray tracing off first. If you have performance headroom and prefer its visual effects, try enabling it and compare the result in the same kind of gameplay.

The current requirements page also distinguishes RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing measurements. CD PROJEKT RED says those measurements used DLSS, FSR, or XeSS in Auto mode; its Path Tracing measurement also used Frame Generation. Other listed configurations used native resolution. Those test-method differences matter when comparing a published tier with your own settings.

- Pick an output resolution. Use the resolution you actually intend to play at. Higher output resolution can significantly affect FPS, according to CD PROJEKT RED.
- Set a realistic frame-rate range. Decide what feels acceptable on your display before changing graphics options. The official targets are reference points, and actual performance varies by scene and system.
- Begin with ray tracing off if performance is insufficient. This gives you a non-RT baseline before testing the more demanding RT or Path Tracing configurations.
- Adjust one option at a time. Keep the other settings fixed so you can tell whether a change helps your image quality and performance balance.
- Compare in representative gameplay. Check the same type of scene and movement after each adjustment; a quiet area may not reflect performance in busier gameplay.
- Consider upscaling for higher-resolution or ray-traced play. DLSS, FSR, and XeSS appear in CD PROJEKT RED’s current RT measurement context, while the historical higher-tier examples indicate DLSS or FSR. Treat the result as configuration-dependent rather than assuming a fixed performance gain.
Check your game version and graphics API
Before following version-specific directions, confirm which version and API your installation uses. CD PROJEKT RED’s support interface lists versions 5.0, 4.04, and 1.32, as well as DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 options; DirectX 12 is marked as the default in that interface. The support choices are PC-specific context, not a guide to console modes.
Requirements may also change. CD PROJEKT RED has announced that a future update will require Windows 11, DirectX 12, an SSD, and revised minimum hardware requirements. The announcement describes a change tied to a next update; check the current official requirements page to determine whether it has taken effect before treating it as a present requirement. Do not apply PC requirements to PlayStation or Xbox.

Use official requirements as a starting point, not a guarantee
CD PROJEKT RED’s updated requirements page lists Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing tiers. It says FPS expectations are based on QA testing and can vary with scene, system configuration, settings, and output resolution. Consult the live table rather than relying on remembered hardware or frame-rate figures, since the page and its version labels can change.
