If an AI agent or bot submits forms or changes data on your website unexpectedly, first preserve logs and change history, then contain the account, integration, credential, or endpoint involved. Next, establish what was changed and whether the automation was authorized before restoring records or tightening controls. Avoid blocking every bot: legitimate search crawlers, monitoring agents, accessibility tools, and approved AI agents may need to keep working.

What to do first

  1. Preserve evidence. Record when the activity occurred, which records or forms were affected, and the account, integration, key, IP address, or session associated with it. Save relevant request, application, login, administrator-action, network, and system-event logs, along with recent configuration changes. Keep copies protected from alteration or deletion; CISA recommends logging these activity types, and OWASP recommends safeguarding collected events against tampering and unauthorized modification or deletion. See CISA’s Secure Cloud Business Applications guidance and OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet.
  2. Contain the suspected access path. Restrict or disable the implicated account, API key, integration, agent, or endpoint while retaining the access needed to investigate. If a credential may have been exposed, revoke it and issue a replacement with only the permissions it needs. Choose the response based on what you find: an approved agent behaving unexpectedly, a compromised credential, and unrelated malicious requests call for different containment steps. OWASP’s Authorization Cheat Sheet explains why access should be checked for the relevant actions and resources.
  3. Scope the impact. List affected forms, records, permissions, and downstream actions. Search for related activity using the same identity, key, IP address, session, or time window. Treat unauthorized reads, edits, new records, and deletions as possible outcomes: an authorization failure can affect data integrity as well as confidentiality.
  4. Recover from a trusted reference. Compare affected records with reliable audit history or backups. Preserve the evidence needed to understand the change before restoring anything, and avoid overwriting a valid later change. NIST’s current incident-response publication is SP 800-61 Rev. 3, published in April 2025; it supersedes Rev. 2.
  5. Escalate, communicate, and monitor. Notify the site’s security or operations owner and follow your organization’s response and notification procedures. Keep watching for recurrence, and document the containment and recovery actions you take.

Determine whether the automation was authorized

“AI agent” describes what software may be doing, not whether it has permission. Trace the request to an account, API key, integration, session, or other identity, then compare its activity with the site’s authorization policy and expected behavior. Check whether the action was permitted for that identity and whether it should have been able to affect the specific record or endpoint.

A valid integration can still be misconfigured, over-permissioned, or operating outside its intended scope. Conversely, an unfamiliar user agent or unusual request pattern alone does not establish that an AI agent made the change. Base decisions on application and access records where available, not on a label or guess about the software.

Prevent unwanted form submissions and changes

Validate form tokens on the server

A visible browser widget is not a security boundary: a direct POST request may reach the submission endpoint without using the displayed form. Cloudflare’s Turnstile server-side validation guidance says tokens must be validated on the server before the form is processed. Reject missing or invalid verification results, and use endpoint rate limits as an additional control. Cloudflare’s form-protection guide was last updated August 25, 2026; see Protect forms from abuse with Turnstile.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set endpoint-specific rate limits

Start by understanding normal traffic to the endpoint, then configure limits and the response to excess requests. Where supported, combine IP-based limits with identity- or session-based limits. IP-only rules may miss activity distributed across many addresses and may also affect multiple legitimate visitors who share a network. Cloudflare’s rate-limiting rules documentation describes endpoint controls; OWASP’s Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet discusses layered anti-automation measures.

Use risk scores as signals, not verdicts

Google reCAPTCHA v3 returns an interaction score from 0.0 to 1.0: its documentation describes 1.0 as very likely a good interaction and 0.0 as very likely a bot. The score is site- and action-specific information, not a universal allow-or-block threshold. Verify the response on your backend, check that its action name matches the action you expected, and tune decisions to your own traffic. Tokens expire after two minutes. See Google’s reCAPTCHA v3 documentation.

Depending on the action and risk, a score can inform whether to allow a request, add a challenge, require step-up verification, send it for moderation, or block it. Avoid treating one score as a substitute for authorization checks.

Require stronger checks for high-impact actions

Apply authorization checks to every sensitive operation, including changes to account settings, publishing content, transferring money, or modifying sensitive records. For actions with greater consequences, consider human review or reauthentication in proportion to the risk. These controls address what the actor is allowed to do; anti-automation checks address how requests are made. OWASP’s authorization guidance and bot-management guidance cover these distinct concerns.

Keep legitimate automation working

Do not blanket-block all bots. OWASP notes that search crawlers, monitoring agents, and accessibility tools can be legitimate; the goal is to raise the cost of abusive automation without disrupting legitimate users and bots. Define any allow policy deliberately, scope it narrowly, and verify an actor’s identity where possible. OWASP’s anti-automation guidance provides further detail.

Log decisions without over-collecting

Record whether requests were allowed, challenged, rate-limited, or blocked, along with the relevant signals needed to investigate future incidents. Protect these logs from unauthorized changes or deletion, and limit sensitive data collection to what is useful for security and operations. CISA’s logging guidance and OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet explain relevant practices.

Choose controls according to the risk

Control Useful when Checks and trade-offs
Server-side form-token verification You need a low-friction check on form submissions. Verify every token on the server and reject missing or invalid results; client-side code alone is insufficient. See Cloudflare’s validation guidance.
Rate limiting An endpoint is receiving too many repeated requests. Tune against normal traffic. IP-only rules can miss distributed activity or affect users on shared networks. See Cloudflare’s rate-limiting documentation and OWASP’s anti-automation guidance.
Risk scoring Different actions warrant different levels of friction. Observe traffic and tune per action. A score is a risk signal, not a universal threshold. See Google’s reCAPTCHA v3 documentation.
Challenges or step-up checks An action requires more confidence or carries greater risk. Account for accessibility and user friction; avoid presenting visible CAPTCHA challenges for every action. See OWASP’s anti-automation guidance.
Allowlisting or blocking specific agents You have a clear policy for particular automated actors. Keep rules narrow so they do not block legitimate search, monitoring, or accessibility activity. Verify identity where possible. See OWASP’s anti-automation guidance.
