Seat the clip evenly around your outer ear so it feels secure without pinching, then test it with the movements your workout requires. If it keeps shifting—especially during running, jumping, or other high-impact exercise—readjust it or consider a design with stabilizing wings or ear hooks. Fit varies by person, and no manufacturer’s retention claim guarantees a secure fit for every ear.
How to fit clip-on earbuds before a workout
- Position the clip evenly. Set it around the outer ear and check that the contact feels comfortable rather than pinched. Clip designs vary, so follow the instructions for your specific model if available.
- Test likely movements while stationary. Turn your head, move your jaw, and try the motions you expect to make during the workout. If an earbud shifts, readjust it before exercising.
- Stop if the fit hurts or irritates your ear. Do not try to solve discomfort by tightening the clip.
- Check retention during the actual exercise motions. Running, skipping, jumping, and plyometric movements can challenge a fit that felt stable while standing.
Shokz describes its OpenDots ONE as using a flexible nickel-titanium joint and soft silicone grip. That is a manufacturer description of one product’s design, not evidence that all clip-on earbuds—or that model for every wearer—will stay in place. Shokz marks the product page discontinued, so current availability is uncertain.
What to try if the earbuds keep shifting
First, readjust the clip. If it continues to move, check whether the manufacturer offers a grip or stabilizer made for that exact model. Do not assume a generic silicone cover or wing will fit a clip-on earbud.
If a different design is an option, compare retention styles. Philips says detachable wings on its TAA3206BK/00 are intended for light- to medium-intensity workouts, while detachable ear hooks are intended for harder sessions. Philips also cautions that outer-ear buds without stabilizers can dislodge during running or kinetic gym activity. These are manufacturer statements about a specific discontinued product and general sports-headphone guidance, not independent fit tests.

For another stabilizer style, Jabra’s Sport Coach Wireless Quick Start Guide says: “The top of the EarWing should fit tight into the ridge of your ear.” That instruction concerns the Jabra earwing; it does not establish compatibility with clip-on earbuds.
Choose a retention style for your workout
| Design | How it is retained | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Clip-on | Rests around the outer ear | Check even, comfortable contact and test it under the movements you plan to do. |
| Stabilizing wing | Sits against the folds or ridge of the outer ear | Can add support; the fit and instructions are model-specific. |
| Ear hook | Loops over the ear | May be an option for harder workouts; check for comfortable, secure placement. |
| In-ear tip, with or without a stabilizer | Fits into the ear canal, sometimes with an additional wing or hook | May feel more secure to some users, but the tip creates a seal and can isolate external sound. |
For steady, lower-impact activity, a comfortable clip-on fit may be adequate. For running, skipping, jumping, or plyometrics, test retention under those exact movements before relying on it. Philips recommends considering in-ear or open-ear sports headphones for activities such as plyometrics or skipping when outer-ear buds without stabilizers may dislodge.

Balance comfort, awareness, and sweat resistance
Outer-ear and open-ear designs avoid inserting a tip into the ear canal. In-ear tips create a seal that can reduce surrounding sound, while open-ear designs leave the ear more open to nearby sounds. If you exercise near traffic, consider how much environmental sound you need to hear; an open design by itself does not guarantee safety.
Sweat and water resistance are specific to each product. Shokz lists an IP54 rating for OpenDots ONE and describes it as suitable for sweat or light rain. That rating applies to that model only; check the exact rating for any earbuds you use, and do not treat it as a measure of fit or retention.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited manufacturers describe retention features and fitting advice, but the sources do not establish how often clip-on earbuds stay secure across different users, nor do they provide an independent comparative test of retention. Treat product descriptions as design information rather than a guarantee. Philips marks the TAA3206BK/00 discontinued, and Shokz marks OpenDots ONE discontinued; check the product pages for current availability before considering either example.
