It does not mean that an entire AI model runs on light: many photonic systems rely on electronics to prepare data, detect results, apply nonlinear functions, or update weights.
How does photonic computing work?
A neural-network layer combines input values with learned weights, often through matrix-vector or matrix-matrix multiplication. It then applies a nonlinear operation, such as an activation function, before passing results to the next layer. Photonic systems aim to perform some of the arithmetic by encoding values in light and letting optical components transform or combine them.
Depending on the design, information can be represented by a light wave’s amplitude or phase, by its position across an optical field, or by its wavelength. Modulators imprint values onto light; propagation, interference, and optical transforms carry out mathematical operations; photodetectors convert the resulting light back into electrical signals. Some designs use optical circuits integrated on a chip, while others use free-space paths or combine optical and electronic stages.
The key distinction is between the operation performed optically and the work done by the complete system. Detection, data conversion, summation, activation functions, and weight updates may still rely on electronics. “Photonic AI” therefore describes a family of architectures, not one all-optical computer.

Which AI calculations can light perform?
Matrix-vector operations
A matrix-vector multiplication combines many inputs with many weights to produce outputs. Optical systems can encode the inputs and weights into light, then use propagation or circuit interactions to form those outputs in parallel. Some designs focus on this operation because it is a recurring part of neural-network inference.
Matrix-matrix operations
Training and some model workloads involve multiplying matrices by other matrices. A 2025 Nature Photonics paper describes parallel optical matrix-matrix multiplication (POMMM) in which a coherent optical field encodes matrix information. Fourier-transform operations and amplitude modulation form products and sums, while spatial separation distinguishes the results. The paper reports theoretical simulations, a physical prototype, and a GPU-compatible optical-neural-network framework demonstrated with convolutional and vision-transformer operations. This establishes a research approach, not a general-purpose deployed replacement for GPU computation.

Nonlinear functions and layer-to-layer processing
Linear matrix operations alone do not make a neural network: nonlinear functions help the network represent more complex relationships. Some systems perform those functions electronically between optical stages. Others seek to integrate optical nonlinear activation. A 2024 Nature Photonics search-result record describes a single-chip coherent optical neural network combining matrix algebra and nonlinear activation; it reports a six-neuron, three-layer demonstration with 410 ps latency. That figure belongs to that small experimental setup, not to a complete AI workload.
How do the main photonic AI approaches differ?
| Approach | How it uses light | Electronic role and demonstrated scope |
|---|---|---|
| Coherent optical propagation (POMMM) | Encodes matrix information in a coherent field and uses optical transforms and amplitude modulation for parallel matrix-matrix operations. | The 2025 Nature Photonics paper reports simulations, a physical prototype, and a GPU-compatible framework demonstrated on convolutional and vision-transformer operations; no comparable end-to-end system benchmark is stated in that paper. |
| Incoherent multilayer optoelectronic network | Uses LED arrays and amplitude-encoded weights, mapping light to photodetector arrays. | In the 2024 Nature Communications experiment, analog circuitry handles differential detection and nonlinear rectification between layers. The three-layer network was tested on MNIST recognition and a nonlinear spiral classification task. |
| Integrated thin-film lithium-niobate tensor core | Uses photonic modulators with a laser for tensor processing. | The 2024 Nature Communications prototype combines optical components with charge-integration photoreception. Its reported computation and weight-update figures describe this hybrid processor, not a head-to-head comparison with a complete GPU system. |
| Single-chip coherent neural network | Integrates matrix algebra and nonlinear activation functions on one chip. | A 2024 Nature Photonics search-result record reports a six-neuron, three-layer demonstration. Detailed comparison with other systems is not stated in that record. |
These designs are not interchangeable. They differ in whether light is coherent, how values are encoded, whether the optical path is integrated or free-space, which operations are optical, and how much electronic processing surrounds the photonic core.

The numbers in this table measure different things: task accuracy, computational throughput, weight-update speed, and latency. They come from different prototypes and workloads, so they cannot be ranked as if they were measurements of the same complete system. In particular, an optical-core speed or latency does not by itself account for moving data into and out of the system, electronic processing, or total application runtime.
Can photonic chips replace GPUs?
The cited demonstrations do not show that photonic chips have replaced GPUs for general-purpose AI. They show that optical hardware can perform particular neural-network operations and that researchers are building systems around those capabilities. The POMMM work includes a GPU-compatible framework, but that is not evidence that a complete photonic system outperforms a GPU across ordinary workloads.

A practical comparison would need to cover the full workload, including data preparation and transfer, optical computation, detection, electronic operations, and any required calibration. It would also need to compare the same model and task under clearly stated accuracy, throughput, latency, and energy conditions. The reported prototype figures do not provide one shared basis for that comparison.

- Scaling the optical system: Increasing the number of inputs, outputs, neurons, or operations can make component count and interconnection more demanding. The 2024 lithium-niobate tensor-core study identifies input/output scaling as a design challenge.
- Stability and accuracy: Optical systems must preserve useful signals through their components and maintain reliable computation. The 2024 incoherent multilayer study identifies stability and accuracy as challenges rather than showing that they are solved across larger systems.
- Electronic interfacing: Read-in and read-out, photodetection, activation, summation, and weight updates can all contribute work outside the optical path. The cited multilayer and tensor-core systems explicitly combine photonics with electronics.
- Operation and model fit: Some optical approaches specialize in particular operations. The 2025 POMMM paper notes that earlier optical paradigms often target specific calculations and that optical vector-matrix approaches may require multiple propagations for matrix-matrix work.
- System-level measurement: A fast optical operation is not automatically a fast or energy-efficient AI service. Meaningful claims require the workload, comparator, measurement boundary, and treatment of electronics and data movement.
What to check when evaluating a photonic AI claim
- Which operation is optical: matrix-vector multiplication, matrix-matrix multiplication, activation, or another transform?
- What is the optical representation and architecture: coherent or incoherent light, integrated circuit or free-space optics, and amplitude, phase, spatial, or wavelength encoding?
- How much of the neural network was demonstrated: one operation, one layer, or multiple layers, and on which task?
- Which steps remain electronic, including data input and output, photodetection, nonlinear functions, and weight updates?
- Does a quoted figure describe the optical core or the full system, and what workload and measurement conditions does it cover?
Those details determine what a prototype result says—and what it does not say—about running AI models in practice.
