To solve Wordle in fewer guesses, make each guess do one of two jobs: test a likely answer or eliminate as many possibilities as you can. Start with a familiar word that covers several common letters without repeats, then use green and yellow feedback to narrow the pattern. There is no permanently best opener: the right choice depends on whether you prioritize information, a chance to solve immediately, or the rules of hard mode.
How Wordle feedback narrows the answer
Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter word. Green means the letter is correct and in the right position; yellow means it appears in the answer but belongs in another position; an unmarked letter is not in the answer. The game’s rulebook describes these rules for the physical edition and says it plays like the digital version. Read the Wordle rulebook.
After each guess, turn the colors into explicit constraints:

- Green: keep that letter fixed in its confirmed position.
- Yellow: use that letter again, but in a different position from the one just tested.
- Unmarked: usually rule that letter out. If a guess contains repeated letters, interpret the feedback carefully: repeated-letter results can make the deduction less straightforward than simply treating every unmarked tile as proof the letter is absent.
A strong next guess fits what you know while testing useful remaining letters. When several possible answers still fit, a guess that separates those possibilities can be more useful than committing early to one candidate.

Choose a starting word for your goal
A good opener tests multiple useful letters in useful positions. Avoiding duplicate letters generally lets one guess reveal more about the answer. But “best” depends on the objective: a word chosen to eliminate possibilities may not itself be a likely answer, while a plausible answer-word preserves a chance to solve on the first guess.
Accessible starters for standard mode
TechRadar’s page, accessed October 3, 2026, reports WordleBot’s standard-mode top tier as SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, CRATE, and CARTE, each rated 99/100. These are a dated third-party snapshot, not a guaranteed current official ranking. TechRadar also documents that starter recommendations have changed over time. Pick a word you know and can recall consistently rather than treating any one ranking as timeless. See TechRadar’s reported Wordle starting-word rankings.

Starters reported for hard mode
The same TechRadar snapshot lists CLASP, SCALD, and PLACE as tied high choices in hard mode. The ranking depends on its assumptions and the answer list being analyzed; it is not evidence that these words are universally superior to standard-mode choices.

In a 2022 report, The New York Times said ADIEU was used by an average of five percent of users each day during the period it covered, making it the favorite starting word in that report. That is a popularity measure, not proof of effectiveness. The same article quoted one player explaining that ADIEU contains all the vowels except O and possibly Y, and that D is fairly common; that explains the appeal of the word, but does not establish it as the best opener. Use letter frequency as a guide, not a shortcut
Common letters are useful to test, but raw frequency cannot identify an answer by itself. TechRadar reports E, A, R, O, and T as its five most frequent letters in the analyzed Wordle answers. Its reported counts are E (1,230), A (975), R (897), O (753), and T (729); these figures describe that page’s analyzed list, not an invariant or guaranteed current answer distribution.
Position matters too. In TechRadar’s data, common initial letters include S, C, B, P, and T, while common final letters include E, Y, T, R, and L. Use such patterns to rank candidates that already fit your color clues. A frequent letter in an impossible position is no help, and a valid answer need not follow the most common pattern.

Make each follow-up guess earn its place
When one candidate looks likely
If your clues leave a strong candidate, try it—especially when it preserves a realistic chance to finish with the guesses available. Check every known green position and make sure each yellow letter has moved. Do not keep testing a letter that your earlier feedback has ruled out, except where repeated-letter feedback makes its status uncertain.
When many candidates remain
If several words still fit, choose a probe that distinguishes among them. In standard mode, that can mean testing fresh common letters even when the probe does not preserve every green or yellow clue. The purpose is to learn enough from the colors to make the next answer guess more certain. This trades the chance of solving on the current guess for a potentially more informative result.

Balance coverage and answer plausibility
Before entering a word, ask whether it is a plausible answer or mainly an information-gathering probe. A familiar, likely-answer word may be preferable when a one-guess solve is still possible; a coverage-focused word may be better when uncertainty is high and you have room to use the result. There is no single choice that maximizes all goals at once.

In standard mode, you can make a deliberate probe that does not reuse all known green and yellow clues, if testing new letters is worth the trade-off. Hard mode requires later guesses to use revealed green and yellow information, which narrows the legal options and can prevent some fresh-letter probes. Choose based on the kind of challenge you want, rather than assuming either mode is inherently better. The available rulebook documents the six-guess game and feedback for the physical adaptation; its hard-mode distinction should not be read as an independently verified statement of every current digital interface detail.
What strategy statistics can—and cannot—tell you
A 2022 paper, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, simulated strategies against a historical set of 2,315 answers. Its hard-mode baseline averaged 4.078 guesses and failed to solve within six trials in 1.77% of cases. The best parameterized strategy tested averaged 3.674 guesses and had a 0.65% failure rate. These are results from that paper’s simulation and dataset, not a promise about human play or today’s answer set. Read the paper on Wordle strategy simulations.

Likewise, The New York Times reported in 2022 that 28% of users who had played more than 10 games during June 15–August 22 used the same starting word at least 90% of the time. That describes consistency, not whether those players chose effective starters. In the same period, the Times described WordleBot’s updated method as assigning probabilities to roughly 4,500 common English candidate words based on prior solutions rather than relying on its former roughly 2,300-word solution list. That is historical method detail; it should not be mistaken for a description of the bot’s current configuration.
Quick Recap
A practical routine for fewer-guess solves
- Pick an opener: use a familiar word with several distinct common letters, or choose a reported starter from the list above if you want a concrete option.
- Translate the colors: write down fixed green positions, yellow letters and their forbidden positions, and letters that appear absent.
- Count plausible answers: if one is compelling, consider guessing it; if many remain, look for a guess that separates them.
- Respect your mode: standard mode allows more freedom to probe; in hard mode, build each guess around the revealed green and yellow clues.
- Use the result: after every guess, update the constraints before choosing again. Do not spend a turn repeating information your earlier guesses already established.
