Before buying refurbished or open-box electronics, verify the exact item’s condition, what was tested or replaced, the warranty and return terms, and the seller’s protections. The label alone does not tell you how thoroughly a device was inspected: sellers use different refurbishment standards, and there is no single definition that applies to every use of “open-box.”
1. Verify the listing and the actual item
Check the seller’s contact information, the exact make and model, the full description, and everything included in the box. Confirm details such as storage and configuration rather than relying on a product-family name. The FTC recommends checking seller information and reading the complete listing when shopping through an online marketplace: FTC marketplace guidance and FTC online-shopping guidance.
- Look for photographs of the specific item, not only stock images. Stock photos cannot show the cosmetic condition of the unit you would receive.
- Ask the seller in writing what its condition grade means for this item, including any scratches, dents, missing parts, or other defects.
- Confirm which accessories are included, such as the charger, cable, remote, or original packaging.
- Save the listing and written replies so you can refer to the stated condition and contents if there is a dispute.
“Refurbished,” “used,” and “open-box” are not substitutes for item-specific details. The FTC notes that “refurbished” and “used” may indicate an item is not in top condition, while Consumer Reports cautions that sellers do not all define refurbishment alike. 2. Ask what was tested, repaired, or replaced
Ask for specifics rather than accepting a general claim that the device was “checked” or “certified.” Consumer Reports notes that refurbishment standards and parts can vary between sellers. A useful written question is: “Which functions were tested, what parts were replaced, and are any known faults or limitations present?”

- Ask which core functions were checked, such as the display, buttons, ports, speakers, cameras, wireless connections, and charging, as relevant to the device.
- Ask whether components were repaired or replaced and whether replacement parts are manufacturer parts or third-party parts.
- For a device with a battery, ask whether it was replaced and whether its condition can be checked. There is no universal battery-health cutoff across device types, so request the actual available information rather than assuming a single percentage makes every device acceptable.
- Confirm whether included accessories, particularly chargers, are manufacturer parts or compatible third-party items.
Battery-checking steps vary by device. Consumer Reports’ phone guide describes settings-based checks for supported phones; do not assume the same menu or method applies to every phone, tablet, or laptop: Consumer Reports’ refurbished-phone guide.
3. Read the warranty before paying
A warranty is separate from the seller’s return policy. Before purchase, read its written terms and check how long coverage lasts, which defects and parts are covered, what remedy is offered, where a claim must be made, and whether you must pay shipping or labor. The FTC says written warranty terms must be available for review before a purchase. Its guidance is at FTC warranties.

- Check who provides the warranty: the manufacturer, retailer, refurbisher, or another party.
- Look for exclusions that matter to the specific device and any limits on service or replacement.
- Save a copy of the warranty and your receipt with the listing and any seller responses.
Policy examples can help show why it is worth checking, but they are not a substitute for current terms. Consumer Reports reported on April 18, 2025, that eBay Certified Refurbished coverage was two years; Apple, Bose, Microsoft, and Samsung refurbished items were described as having one year; Amazon and Best Buy as 90 days, with Amazon Renewed Premium at one year; and Dell as a 100-day limited warranty. The same article described a 90-day Amazon Renewed refund or replacement period and a 14-day Apple return period. 4. Check returns and marketplace protection separately
A return policy determines what you can do with the item during the seller’s return period; it is not the same as warranty coverage for a later defect. Check the return deadline, whether you receive a refund or replacement, who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and whether marketplace protection applies to this seller and purchase. Plan to inspect and test the device promptly after delivery. A short return window may end before a problem is discovered if you leave the item unopened or unused. Consumer Reports also recommends considering return and warranty terms when weighing a refurbished purchase: refurbished-electronics guide.

Compare like with like. A lower listed price may not be a better deal if the configuration differs, accessories are missing, the condition is worse, or the buyer bears more repair risk. Use the same criteria for every listing:

- Exact model, storage, and configuration
- Item-specific photos and described cosmetic condition
- Inspection and testing details
- Original or third-party replacement parts and accessories
- Battery information, where relevant
- Warranty coverage, duration, and claim process
- Return deadline, refund or replacement terms, and costs
- Seller and marketplace protections
- Shipping and total price, including likely battery or repair expense
Compare that total with the price of a new version and other listings for the same configuration. The cited consumer guidance does not establish a universal discount threshold at which refurbished electronics become worthwhile; the value depends on the specific condition, costs, and protections.

6. Use this final go/no-go checklist
- Proceed cautiously when the exact model, condition, included items, and item-specific photos are clear; the seller answers questions; and the warranty and returns are readable and acceptable.
- Pause or walk away if the seller will not identify the item’s condition, provide meaningful testing or parts information, or explain who handles warranty claims and returns.
- Before checkout, save the listing, written answers, warranty, return terms, and receipt.
- After delivery, inspect and test the device promptly while the stated return period is still open.
