Yes. A mini PC can run OBS Studio as the encoder for a YouTube podcast stream, provided it can handle your chosen scene and settings and your internet connection has enough stable upload bandwidth. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in OBS, test the preview and audio, then go live. Start with a simple 720p30 or 1080p30 setup and verify it under realistic conditions before relying on it for a show.
What you need for a mini PC podcast stream
The mini PC runs OBS and sends the live video and audio to YouTube. The actual workload depends on the processor or graphics encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and whether you also record locally. OBS warns that meeting its baseline system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully: OBS system requirements.
- A mini PC with a supported operating system and a current OBS Studio version.
- A microphone. A USB microphone can be enough for a simple solo setup; for multiple XLR microphones, consider an audio interface or mixer if your equipment requires one.
- Headphones to monitor the sound. Add a webcam if the show is on camera; for an audio-led show, a static cover image can keep the scene simpler.
- A reliable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the full stream bitrate.
Check that your microphone and camera connect to the mini PC and that the operating system recognizes them. OBS supports common webcam and capture-device workflows, but the required ports and drivers depend on your specific equipment. You can use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point; test its settings with your actual show rather than assuming the suggested configuration will work in every scene. See OBS’s quick-start guide.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before scheduling a show, especially if this is the first time the channel will livestream. YouTube’s steps and requirements are in Get started with live streaming.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for a new encoder stream or Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page and allow reminders.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it identifies where your encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a stream to your event.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If OBS asks for a server, copy the server URL from YouTube. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Set the output and audio settings. Choose resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate based on the guidance below and your machine’s test results.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then check the picture, audio, and stream-health messages. When the preview is correct, click Go live if that is part of your event workflow.
Treat the stream key like a password. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before your next broadcast.
Choose OBS settings for the mini PC and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked 2026-10-04, recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed four seconds between keyframes. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Follow the current encoder table in YouTube’s live encoder settings if you choose a different codec or resolution.

| Starting video output | YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate | When it may suit a podcast |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | A sensible first test for a modest mini PC, a static-art show, or a connection with less upload capacity. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Consider it if the mini PC handles the scene smoothly and the tested connection has enough upload headroom. |
These are YouTube-recommended video bitrates, not guarantees of performance on a particular mini PC or internet connection. A spoken-word show usually does not need a high frame rate; a simple 30 fps scene can reduce workload compared with a more demanding production. In OBS, use an available hardware encoder if the mini PC’s graphics hardware supports it and it supports the selected codec. Intel Quick Sync is available on supported Intel graphics, but capability and output quality vary by hardware generation. Software encoding is another option, but test whether the CPU can sustain it with your full scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with one microphone, one simple scene, and either a static image or a single camera. Add animated overlays, browser sources, extra cameras, or local recording one at a time, then test again. OBS notes that processor needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no universal mini PC CPU or RAM figure that establishes streaming suitability.

Measure upload speed and leave room for the stream
For a live stream, available upload capacity matters—not the download number in an internet plan. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above your total stream bitrate and notes that other people or devices sharing a connection can reduce your available upload. Its streaming tips recommend testing upload bitrate.
For example, a 720p30 H.264 video setting of 6 Mbps needs more than 6 Mbps of stable available upload once audio and headroom are considered. Test at the location and time of the show, with typical household or studio network use underway. If upload varies or the stream reports health problems, try a lower resolution or bitrate and test again. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful reliability choice when available, but the connection that matters is the one your test confirms can sustain the show.

Prepare the podcast scene and audio
In OBS, create a scene for the actual show and verify the intended microphone is selected. Speak at normal volume and watch the audio meter; listen through headphones for clipping, echo, hum, or the wrong input. If there are multiple speakers, check each mic and the mix independently. Add a camera only if you plan to be visible, and confirm that the right camera and framing appear in the preview.
Do a full test with speech and movement similar to the live episode. A stationary cover image places less demand on the mini PC than a camera-heavy scene with animated graphics, but either format can work if the hardware and upload connection sustain it. If you record locally as well, confirm OBS is writing the file and check a playback before the show.

Preflight and go live
- Prepare ahead. YouTube advises preparing the stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it.
- Test the complete setup. Start OBS with the planned scene, microphone, camera or artwork, and any local recording. Check the YouTube preview, audio, and stream health before the public start.
- Check the viewer experience. Confirm the watch page is accessible and view it on a phone as well as the production screen.
- Monitor during the show. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube’s stream-health messages, plus the audio and picture. Avoid adding new sources or changing encoder settings mid-show unless needed to recover.
- End cleanly. Stop the live stream in YouTube, then stop the encoder in OBS. If you made a local recording, verify the file; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check current Studio behavior before depending on archive retention.
YouTube’s timing guidance and live workflow are in its live-streaming help and encoder setup page.
Troubleshoot common mini PC streaming problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is streaming, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the event is the one associated with that key. If the key may have been exposed or changed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Stream health reports a weak or unstable connection: Run an upload test under the same network conditions, reduce the video bitrate or resolution, and check whether other devices are using upload bandwidth. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The video stutters or OBS struggles: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and test a supported hardware encoder if available. Close unnecessary applications and repeat a full-length rehearsal; a machine’s baseline specifications alone do not establish its streaming capacity.
- Viewers cannot hear you or hear the wrong microphone: Confirm the selected input in OBS, watch the meter while speaking, and monitor the mix with headphones. Check operating-system permissions and device connections if the input is absent.
- The show is live but the picture or sound is wrong: Use the Live Control Room preview before going public whenever possible. Check the active OBS scene, source visibility, microphone level, and audio routing, then correct and verify the preview.
- The recording is missing: Check OBS’s recording status and destination before and during the show, then open the saved file after stopping. Do not assume an online archive is a substitute for confirming a local recording.
