Yes. A VPS can keep a prerecorded study stream running on YouTube while your computer is off: the VPS runs an encoder that sends a video file or playlist to YouTube Live. You still need to activate live streaming, create a stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and supply the encoder with that stream’s URL and private key. No universal Indian VPS size is established for this workload, so choose a plan from its current terms and validate it with a trial stream.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The VPS hosts the encoder process; YouTube remains the destination and controls when the stream is public. The encoder reads your media and sends an audio/video feed to YouTube Live. A server being online does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the encoder, VPS, network path, storage, source media, or YouTube ingest can fail.
Prepare your channel and stream
- Confirm live streaming is available. Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming in YouTube. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder option. Follow the current controls shown for your account.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. Use the endpoint displayed in Live Control Room, not a URL copied from an old tutorial. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming feed. Confirm that Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming signal and that the picture and sound are correct before using YouTube’s controls to go live.
- Run a private or unlisted trial first. Watch the stream and inspect VPS resource use and logs under the intended workload before relying on it for a public, continuous broadcast.
Configure secure YouTube ingest
Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied for the stream. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube ingestion server and application path, port 443, and the hostname required for SNI during the TLS handshake. A mismatch—such as using cleartext RTMP when the configured endpoint expects RTMPS—can prevent connection. The endpoint and key are configuration values tied to your account or stream, not universal constants. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingest requirements.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. For a headless VPS deployment, a software encoder is a reasonable approach, but there is no verified universal command, CPU minimum, or VPS specification for every source and workload. The requirements differ depending on whether the VPS must encode media or only relay an already-encoded feed. Use the actual ingest settings shown by YouTube and validate the selected encoder and VPS rather than assuming a generic recipe will work.

Choose an Indian VPS by testing the workload
YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe an India region, minimum VPS plan, CPU or RAM threshold, transfer allowance, price, or policy for continuous encoder workloads. Those details depend on the hosting provider and plan. Compare providers using their current published terms; do not assume that an India location, a low advertised price, or an always-on VPS guarantees suitability.
- Region: Confirm an India location is actually available for the plan in your account and region.
- Workload policy: Check CPU allocation and whether sustained use is permitted. Encoding compressed media can demand more CPU than relaying a pre-encoded feed.
- Traffic and cost: Check outbound transfer limits, included traffic, and overage charges. Estimate egress using the intended final bitrate and stream hours, then compare the estimate with the plan’s allowance.
- Storage: Confirm capacity and persistence for source files, logs, and any local recording. Account for disk growth if recordings are retained.
- Recovery and support: Check host maintenance practices, support response options, and available recovery controls.
- Operation: Decide whether you need a graphical interface or can administer a headless server, and test startup after reboot.
Measure the intended stream on the chosen plan before committing to continuous use. Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, network traffic, and stream health during the trial. Any egress figure calculated from bitrate and hours is an estimate; actual traffic and charges depend on the host’s accounting and the stream’s final settings.

Keep the encoder recoverable
Configure process supervision or a restart policy so an encoder crash can be detected and restarted, and arrange a human alert path for failures that need intervention. A restart can restore a crashed process, but it cannot recover a deleted source file, expired key, VPS outage, exhausted transfer allowance, insufficient CPU, or a rights-related interruption from YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private and know how to reset it.
- Confirm the encoder starts after a VPS reboot.
- Review encoder and system logs when the feed drops or fails to appear.
- Monitor free disk space, resource use, and outbound traffic.
- Keep the source media accessible and maintain a way to receive and act on alerts.
Plan for rights, originality, and YouTube policies
Secure appropriate rights for every visual and audio element before streaming. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; a match that remains can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a temporary interruption, or termination. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

YouTube’s livestream terms require content providers to represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights, and to follow applicable laws and regulations. Read the YouTube livestream terms and obtain permission that covers your intended use, territory, and platform.
Permission to use content and eligibility to monetize it are separate questions. YouTube applies channel monetization policies to live streams; reused content can fail monetization review even when the creator has permission, and repetitive or mass-produced material may also be ineligible. A study stream built from original or meaningfully differentiated material is a safer editorial choice than a minimally changed loop of stock footage or music, but no format guarantees monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve one continuous 24-hour archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping recordings matters, plan separate shorter sessions or record locally with storage rotation, and verify current archive behavior before launch. A local recording needs enough persistent disk space and monitoring to avoid filling the VPS. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong stream URL or key, inactive stream configuration, or encoder not running | Compare the encoder’s endpoint and key with the current Live Control Room values; inspect encoder logs and confirm the process is active. |
| Connection fails during ingest | RTMP/RTMPS scheme mismatch, incorrect endpoint path, or TLS/SNI issue | Use the exact RTMPS endpoint shown for the stream, including its path and hostname; confirm port 443 connectivity. |
| Feed starts, then drops | Encoder crash, network interruption, host maintenance, resource pressure, or transfer limits | Check timestamps in logs alongside CPU, memory, traffic, and host status; ensure supervision and alerts are operating. |
| Stream becomes unstable under load | Insufficient sustained CPU for encoding or an unsuitable network/plan | Measure resource use during a trial. Reassess the workload and host terms; no universal minimum VPS size is established. |
| Stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder | Possible third-party content match or rights issue | Review YouTube’s notice, verify rights for all audio and visuals, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. |
| Archive is missing or incomplete | Continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s stated archive window or local recording failed | Use shorter planned sessions if YouTube archives are needed; otherwise verify local recording, disk capacity, and rotation. |
