NVIDIA NVENC is a dedicated video-encoding engine built into supported NVIDIA GPUs. In live-streaming software such as OBS, selecting an NVENC encoder lets the GPU’s encoder hardware handle video encoding instead of relying on CPU-based software encoding. It can be useful when a computer is also rendering a game or composing a scene, but it does not guarantee a particular improvement in frame rate, image quality, CPU use, or latency.

What NVENC is—and what it is not

NVENC is NVIDIA’s name for hardware-based video encoding in supported GPUs. It is not a codec, streaming platform, or separate graphics card. NVIDIA says its GPUs contain hardware encoders and decoders separate from CUDA cores, and that they accelerate encoding and decoding for popular codecs. NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK overview describes the architecture and supported formats.

A codec is the format used to compress video. NVENC is the hardware path that can encode video in a supported format. NVIDIA lists H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1, but which formats and features are available depends on the GPU generation and model. Do not assume every NVIDIA GPU supports all three.

How NVENC helps in a live-streaming workflow

A streaming application captures or composes video, encodes it, and sends the resulting stream to a platform. With NVENC selected, the application can use the GPU’s dedicated encoder rather than CPU software encoding for that encoding step. This is particularly relevant when the same PC is also rendering a game or handling a complex scene.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The benefit is a different allocation of work, not a guaranteed performance result. The sources do not establish a universal amount of CPU saved or a fixed improvement to frame rate, latency, or visual quality. Results depend on the computer, GPU workload, encoder settings, application, and stream requirements. The GPU still has to render the game and scene; NVENC does not make those tasks disappear.

Which NVENC codec should you choose?

Choose a format supported by both your exact GPU and the platform receiving the stream. Also check the current platform requirements and the options exposed by your current streaming software; selectable settings can be limited by the service.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • H.264: NVIDIA’s OBS guide names H.264 NVENC for Twitch in the context of its recommendations. Confirm current Twitch and OBS requirements before relying on that recommendation.
  • HEVC (H.265) or AV1: NVIDIA’s guide recommends AV1 for YouTube with an RTX 40 Series GPU, or HEVC otherwise, in the guide’s stated context. That guide is for OBS Studio 29.1 and up; treat its recommendations as a practical example, not a permanent rule for every GPU, software release, or YouTube configuration.

For the guide and its platform-oriented examples, see NVIDIA’s OBS broadcasting guide. Codec availability and service rules can change, so verify the current choices in OBS and the destination platform.

How to select NVENC in OBS

  1. Check your GPU model. Find the installed NVIDIA GPU in your operating system’s system information or graphics settings, then check NVIDIA’s support information for the encoder formats and features that model supports. This avoids choosing a codec the hardware cannot provide.
  2. Open OBS and go to Settings → Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced if needed to expose the encoder controls, then select the streaming section.
  3. Choose the available NVENC encoder. Select the NVENC option that matches a codec accepted by your platform and supported by your GPU. The label and available choices can vary by OBS version and hardware.
  4. Set the stream to meet the platform’s current requirements. Use the resolution, bitrate, and other options the destination service and current OBS version allow. Do not treat a setting recommendation from an older guide as universal.
  5. Apply the settings and check a test stream. Confirm that OBS is using the intended encoder and that the platform receives the stream without errors. If the desired encoder or codec is absent, check GPU support, OBS version, and platform limits before changing hardware.

NVIDIA’s guide supplies examples, not a single setting that is right for every channel. This evidence does not establish universal bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or quality settings, so use the current requirements for your platform rather than guessing from a generic preset.

NVENC versus CPU software encoding

The practical distinction is where video encoding is performed: NVENC uses dedicated GPU encoder hardware, while software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU. NVENC may suit a PC that is already busy rendering or composing a live scene; CPU encoding may be preferable in a workflow where CPU resources and software-encoder controls are the priority. Which option performs better depends on the actual system and settings.

There is no controlled comparison here that supports numeric claims about quality, latency, or CPU savings. Compare the available encoders on your own setup at the same output settings, and judge stream stability and the result on the destination platform.

Using NVIDIA encoding with FFmpeg

OBS is not the only route to NVENC. NVIDIA documents GPU-accelerated encoding and decoding through FFmpeg for developer and advanced workflows. The available features depend on the hardware and software configuration; this is separate from selecting an encoder in OBS. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg hardware-acceleration guide.

When you may not need new hardware

First identify the GPU already installed in your computer and check which codecs and encoder features it supports. A compatible GPU may already provide the NVENC path you need. Consider an upgrade only if the existing hardware cannot provide the codec or workflow you require; the fact that a newer GPU supports additional options does not by itself mean every streamer needs one.

Or let it run in the cloud

NVENC is a way to encode a live stream on a compatible PC. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and sends to YouTube only.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
  • Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; StreamNeo does not re-encode them.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account.

The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
