The examples below use Puppeteer’s current HTTPRequest API, listed as version 25.12.0 in the documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026.
Read a POST body from the request event
Register a request listener on the Puppeteer Page. Each event supplies an HTTPRequest. Check the method, optionally check whether the request has a body, and call fetchPostData() to retrieve it.

});fetchPostData() returns a Promise<string | undefined>, so await it and handle the possibility that the body is unavailable. hasPostData() is a useful guard, but it does not guarantee that the deprecated postData() method can return the body. See Puppeteer’s HTTPRequest API and fetchPostData() reference.
Filter for the request you need
A page can issue many POST requests, so filtering only by method may log unrelated traffic. Add checks for URL, resource type, or other request properties when you know which request you want to inspect.

});The request event covers requests initiated by the page, not just a form submission. The exact endpoint path in this example is illustrative; replace it with the URL pattern for the request you intend to observe.
Interpret the returned body carefully
The API returns a string or undefined. The Puppeteer documentation does not promise one serialization format for every content type, so inspect the request headers and interpret the string according to the application’s content type and encoding. Do not assume every body is JSON or parse it as JSON without checking.

undefined, handle it as unavailable rather than treating it as an empty string. - For JSON, parse only after confirming the request’s content type and account for parse errors.
- For form-encoded or other content, use the parser appropriate to that format.
Why request.postData() may be undefined
request.postData() is deprecated. Puppeteer documents that it may be undefined when the data is too long or is not readily available in decoded form, even when hasPostData() is true. Use and await request.fetchPostData() instead. The main API and guide pages reviewed identify version 25.12.0; the dedicated fetchPostData reference identifies version 25.8.0.
Do not enable interception just to read data
Normal request observation and request interception are different. The request event lets you inspect traffic. Interception is for modifying, aborting, or fulfilling requests. Once interception is enabled, each request stalls until a handler resolves it or the browser cache completes it. See Puppeteer’s request interception guide.

If you already need interception for another reason, resolve each request and account for other handlers. Check isInterceptResolutionHandled() immediately before calling continue(), abort(), or respond(). Keep the check and resolution call together synchronously; do not put an await between them.

Does reading POST data require enabling Puppeteer request interception?
No. Listen for the page’s normal request event and use fetchPostData(); interception is for changing or blocking requests.

What does Puppeteer return when fetchPostData() cannot retrieve a body?
Its documented return type is Promise<string | undefined>, so the resolved value may be undefined.
