Add a requestfailed listener before the action that triggers the request, then log the request URL and request.failure()?.errorText. This identifies requests that fail during loading, but it does not catch every problem: HTTP errors such as 404 and 503 normally complete as requests and must be checked through their response status instead. If page.goto() rejects, investigate the navigation error and the operation’s timeout separately.
Log the failed request
Register the listener before navigating or performing the page action. Puppeteer’s HTTPRequest.failure() documentation shows logging the request URL alongside its failure text. In production code, guard for a missing failure object or missing text; Puppeteer does not guarantee that an error string will be available.
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
const failure = request.failure();
console.error(
'Request failed:',
request.url(),
failure?.errorText ?? '(no failure text)'
);
});
Attach this to the page before the operation you want to observe:
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
const failure = request.failure();
console.error('Request failed:', request.url(), failure?.errorText ?? '(no failure text)');
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} catch (error) {
console.error('Navigation rejected:', error);
}
The event can also report failed subresource requests, such as a script or image, even if the main document navigation succeeds. Keep the request URL in your logs so you can distinguish a problem loading the page itself from one affecting only a resource or later interaction.

Distinguish request failures from HTTP error responses
requestfailed means a request did not complete successfully at the loading or transport level. It is not a general signal that a response has an unsuccessful HTTP status. Puppeteer’s API reference explains that HTTP responses such as 404 or 503 still complete as requests and normally emit requestfinished.
To find completed requests with an error status, inspect responses instead:

page.on('response', response => {
if (response.status() >= 400) {
console.error('HTTP error response:', response.status(), response.url());
}
});
Use both signals when diagnosing a page: requestfailed for requests that did not complete, and response status codes for requests that completed but received an HTTP error. A 404 or 503 alone does not explain why the server returned that status; correlate it with the URL, application logs, and server-side behavior.
When page.goto() rejects
A rejected navigation is a separate symptom from an individual failed subresource. The documented Frame.goto() exceptions include an SSL error, invalid target URL, exceeded navigation timeout, an unreachable or unresponsive server, failure of the main resource, and a URL blocked by configured allowlist or blocklist rules.

- Validate the target: check that the URL is well-formed and that your code is navigating to the intended address.
- Check reachability and TLS: determine whether the server is responding and whether the connection encounters an SSL error.
- Check access rules: review configured URL allowlists or blocklists if the target may be restricted.
- Inspect the main resource: a failed document request can prevent navigation even when some other page resources load.
- Read the rejection alongside request logs: the navigation exception and
requestfailedevents describe related but distinct parts of the failure.
If navigation resolves after redirects, Puppeteer returns the response for the last redirect in the chain.
Identify which timeout expired
Do not raise every timeout as a first response. First identify the operation that timed out: navigation, a selector wait, or another wait. Puppeteer exposes navigation timeout controls for operations including goto, reload, back/forward, setContent, and waitForNavigation. The WaitForOptions reference specifies a 30,000 ms default for its wait timeout and says that 0 disables that timeout; page timeout methods can also change defaults.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Read the rejected operation and its error to identify the wait that expired.
- Check whether the target is slow, unreachable, or waiting for a condition that never occurs.
- Increase the timeout only if the operation is legitimately expected to take longer. Disabling a timeout can leave a process waiting indefinitely.
Diagnose by symptom, scope, and environment
Classifying the problem narrows the next check. The official request lifecycle, navigation, and troubleshooting references support these distinctions:
| What you observe | Likely area to inspect |
|---|---|
A URL appears in requestfailed |
That request’s loading or transport failure; record its URL and any available failure text. |
| A response arrives with status 404 or 503 | The HTTP response and server or application behavior, not requestfailed. |
page.goto() rejects |
Target URL, SSL, reachability, main-resource loading, URL access rules, and navigation timeout. |
| Only one URL fails | That target and its resources, redirects, response, or access rules. |
| Many URLs fail in one runtime | Browser installation, runtime configuration, network environment, and logs from that environment. |
| Failure appears only in CI, a container, or cloud | Environment-specific browser or operating-system issues; compare with the local runtime and use the relevant troubleshooting guidance. |
Also identify the phase: main navigation, a subresource load, or a later page interaction. A successful main navigation does not prove that every script, image, or subsequent request succeeded.

Troubleshoot runtime and browser problems
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide covers environment-specific cases that can look like page failures, including browser download scripts blocked by a package manager, HTTPS-first behavior that can make remote HTTP navigation report net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT, Linux sandbox or AppArmor launch problems, and Alpine Chromium compatibility caveats.
- Browser download or launch failure: follow the troubleshooting guidance for the package manager, operating system, and browser installation involved.
net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENTon HTTP navigation: check whether HTTPS-first behavior is relevant to the browser and target.- Linux sandbox or AppArmor issue: investigate the specific launch error and runtime configuration. Do not disable the sandbox as a blanket fix without understanding the security tradeoff.
- Alpine container: check the guide’s Chromium compatibility caveats for the exact runtime rather than assuming a page-level network problem.
