Manage visual testing baselines as reviewed reference screenshots, not files CI should refresh automatically. Capture pages under repeatable conditions, compare pull-request output with an explicit baseline, inspect every meaningful diff, and accept intended changes through a reviewed workflow. A changed screenshot is evidence of a rendering change—not, by itself, proof of a defect.

What a visual testing baseline is

A baseline is an accepted rendering that later test runs use as a reference. On the first Playwright visual test run, when no matching reference exists, Playwright writes a screenshot for review. Once accepted and committed, subsequent runs compare their screenshots with that reference and report differences.

The baseline therefore encodes a decision about what the interface should look like under particular capture conditions. Treat its creation and updates as changes to the test’s expectations. Playwright recommends committing generated snapshots to version control and reviewing changes to them (Playwright visual comparisons).

Choose where baselines live and how they are approved

For a repository-managed workflow, screenshot files live with the code and are changed through ordinary version control. For a hosted workflow, a service associates captures with builds or branches and provides a review interface. Neither model removes the need to choose the correct comparison target or review changes.

Decision Repository-managed snapshots (Playwright example) Hosted workflows (Percy and Chromatic examples)
Baseline storage Snapshot image files in the repository; commit and review them with the test changes. The service associates snapshots with builds and branches and stores accepted baselines.
How changes become the new reference Run the update command, inspect generated images, and commit the approved files. Review changes in the service and accept or deny them; acceptance advances a baseline where documented.
Approval scope Repository review and merge policy determine what snapshot changes are accepted. Percy Git approves or rejects a whole build; Percy Visual Git allows snapshot-level approval. Chromatic reviews snapshot changes.
Baseline selection Your checkout and CI configuration determine which reference files are used. Percy Git traces a base build through commit history; Visual Git uses latest approved snapshots on each branch. Chromatic UI Tests use a branch baseline, while UI Review compares a branch with its merge base.
Capture environment Your team controls it and should keep baseline creation and comparison conditions aligned. Rendering and review are handled through the service workflow; verify the chosen service’s capture behavior and settings.
Merge gate Test results and repository review rules can block a merge. A vendor status check can surface review state to a pull request and can be required before merge.

Choose repository-managed files when you want the expected images and their history directly in source control. Choose a hosted review flow when its build, branch, and approval controls fit your team’s process. For approval granularity, Percy’s two Git strategies differ materially: build-wide approval versus approval of individual snapshots. See Percy Git integration.

Build a repeatable capture environment

Differences are useful only when they are not dominated by environmental noise. Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshot rendering. Its guidance is to run comparisons in the same environment that generated the baseline (Playwright visual comparisons).

  1. Fix the runtime. Pin the browser version and run baseline creation and CI comparison in the same operating-system image and headless configuration. Avoid generating references on a developer laptop and comparing them in a materially different CI environment.
  2. Fix the viewport and display scale. Use consistent viewport dimensions and device scale settings so layout wrapping and pixel density are comparable.
  3. Use stable data and states. Control test data and application state. Avoid letting timestamps, rotating ads, random content, or other changing elements vary without reason between runs.
  4. Control animation and volatile elements narrowly. Playwright supports a screenshot stylesheet through stylePath, which can hide or neutralize specific dynamic elements. Filter only content that is genuinely irrelevant to the check; broad suppression can conceal real regressions.
  5. Choose representative coverage. Capture the pages, components, and important states whose visual behavior matters, rather than treating one screenshot as a proxy for the entire application.

Keep environment changes deliberate. If you upgrade the browser or change the rendering environment, expect that screenshots may move; review those changes as a baseline transition rather than silently treating them as application regressions.

Create and commit the initial baseline

For Playwright, write a visual assertion with a screenshot expectation, then run the relevant test with no existing reference. The first run creates a snapshot. Review the generated image for correctness and commit it with the test code so the reference is available to later CI runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page visual reference', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
npx playwright test

The test must run against the application in the state and environment you intend to preserve. Inspect the generated snapshot directory before committing; the first image establishes what future comparisons regard as accepted. Playwright recommends committing the snapshot directory and reviewing its changes (Playwright visual comparisons).

Hosted services can establish references from an initial build as well. Chromatic says later builds compare against existing baselines, and that baselines update only when changes are accepted by you or your team (Chromatic: Branches, baselines, and git history). Review the first build with the same care as a later update: it defines the point of comparison.

Run comparisons in CI against an explicit base

Run visual checks on pull requests or other changes where the result can be tied to a commit. Before enabling a merge gate, make clear which reference CI will compare against. A green or red result is difficult to interpret if the baseline source is implicit.

  • Repository snapshots: ensure CI checks out the intended reference files for the tested commit or target branch, and that snapshot updates are not being generated as an automatic side effect of ordinary test runs.
  • Percy Git: its Git strategy traces a base build through commit history. Visual Git instead selects the latest approved snapshots for each branch; choose the strategy that matches your branch and acceptance model (Percy Git integration).
  • Chromatic: UI Tests use a branch baseline; UI Review compares a branch against its merge base. These comparisons answer different questions, so select the one aligned with the review you intend to perform (Chromatic: Branches, baselines, and git history).

Once the comparison target is clear, use CI status as a merge gate if your team requires visual review before integration. Chromatic documents accepting changes to advance baselines and denying changes to fail the build; its status check can be required for merge readiness (Chromatic CI integration). Decide who can accept or deny changes and what happens when a review is still pending.

Review diffs and advance baselines deliberately

A diff means the rendered result changed. It may reflect an intended redesign, a regression, or a capture-condition change. Compare the before and after images and inspect the affected page or state before deciding.

  1. Identify the changed snapshots and the affected UI state.
  2. Determine whether the difference was intended and whether it is limited to the expected area.
  3. Accept intentional changes through the project’s review mechanism; reject or fix unexpected changes.
  4. Update the reference only after that decision, and keep the code change and baseline change in the same review context where practical.

For Playwright, update local references explicitly with npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Then inspect every changed image and commit the approved snapshot changes. Do not run this as an unattended routine CI refresh: doing so can normalize unreviewed output as the new expectation.

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Playwright also provides maxDiffPixels and screenshot styling options for handling comparison sensitivity and volatile content. Set tolerances intentionally, document why they are appropriate, and validate that they do not hide meaningful changes (Playwright visual comparisons).

Keep branch baselines and history aligned

Hosted workflows may preserve different accepted references on different branches. Chromatic documents that a feature branch can retain an older baseline after a change has been accepted elsewhere; when the branch later incorporates that change, it may show already-approved work as a new difference. Regularly merge or rebase the current mainline into long-lived feature branches to keep their comparison context current.

Chromatic also documents how it chooses among possible ancestor snapshots when branches merge: by default it selects the most recently accepted baseline, and it provides alternatives for preferring merged baselines. Make sure contributors understand which reference is selected and how accepted, denied, or unreviewed changes affect future comparisons (Chromatic: Branches, baselines, and git history).

If you need a captured page as an artifact rather than a version-controlled test baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; this example saves a WebP capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Troubleshoot common baseline problems

  • Many snapshots change after a CI move or browser upgrade: compare the baseline-generation and test environments, including OS, browser, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Align them or intentionally review the resulting baseline change.
  • A test fails on changing content: stabilize the data or isolate the genuinely volatile element with a narrowly scoped screenshot stylesheet. Do not suppress a large region simply to make the diff pass.
  • A feature branch reports changes that were already accepted on main: update the feature branch from the current mainline so its branch-specific baseline context is synchronized.
  • A PR compares against an unexpected image: verify the configured base build or branch strategy and confirm which snapshot set CI checked out or selected.
  • A visual change passes without review: check whether snapshot update mode is enabled in CI or whether a hosted service’s status check is absent from required merge checks. Keep baseline promotion explicit.
  • A tolerance setting makes diffs disappear: inspect the changed pixels and reduce or remove the tolerance if it masks a meaningful interface change; use a project-specific reason for any non-default threshold.
