1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA Cypress “detached from the DOM” error usually means the application replaced an element after Cypress found it. Your test still holds the old node, which is no longer attached to the document. The practical fix is usually to end the chain after an action or other change that may trigger a rerender, then query the element again before using it.
What a detached-element error means
Cypress checks whether an element is attached to the document when it performs assertions and determines whether an action is actionable. If the application removes or replaces that node in the meantime, Cypress cannot safely use the old reference. The page may look unchanged to a person if the replacement happens quickly, but the original DOM node is gone. Cypress describes this failure in its Common Error Messages guidance.
This can happen in any application that updates its DOM after a state change; it is not limited to a particular front-end framework. A click can itself cause the change, or an asynchronous update can replace the target between commands.
Why Cypress does not always find the replacement automatically
Cypress retries linked queries and assertions, but commands differ in whether they can be retried. Queries can be rerun to find a matching element; actions such as click() execute once. Cypress retries the queries leading up to an action while waiting for the element to become actionable, but it does not repeat the action just because later work fails. See Retry-ability in Cypress and Interacting with Elements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An assertion that passes partway through a chain can also establish a retry boundary: later work may retry from the subject produced by that assertion instead of starting again at the original page-level query. If that subject has since been replaced, retrying downstream commands cannot make the old node current. Cypress explains assertion behavior in its cy.should() API documentation.
Fix the chain by querying again after a DOM change
When an action may rerender the page, finish that chain at the action. Start a new chain from cy and locate the element again for the next action, assertion, or traversal.

// Risky if clicking replaces the button
cy.get('button').click().parent()
// Query again after the click
cy.get('button').click()
cy.get('button').parent()
The second cy.get() is a fresh lookup. Use a locator that identifies the intended element, such as a stable test ID, rather than assuming the replacement has the same position or meaning as the old node.
Choose the right pattern for assertions and repeated actions
Put dependent assertions in one retryable callback
If several checks should apply to the same current element, put them inside a .should(($el) => { ... }) callback. Cypress retries the linked query and callback together until the checks pass or time out.

cy.get('.list').find('li').eq(2).should(($li) => {
expect($li).to.contain('Header')
expect($li.children('.child').eq(3)).to.contain('child')
})
Keep callbacks free of side effects: Cypress may call the callback more than once while retrying. Do not click, type, or otherwise change application state inside it.
Use a DOM alias when you need a reusable locator
A default DOM alias stores the query chain and reruns it when accessed, rather than simply preserving a stale element reference. Define it before the action that may replace the node, then retrieve it again as needed. Cypress documents this behavior in Variables and Aliases in Cypress.

cy.get('[data-testid="todos"] li').first().as('firstTodo')
cy.get('@firstTodo').find('.edit').click()
cy.get('@firstTodo').should('have.class', 'editing')
Make sure the aliased query still identifies the intended item after the application updates. If the list can reorder or contain multiple similar items, use a more specific locator.
Requery between actions when the element may be replaced
Separate lookups let Cypress resolve the target again before each action. This is useful for inputs or controls whose DOM node may be replaced after focus, clearing, typing, or blur.

cy.get('#payment-input').focus()
cy.get('#payment-input').clear()
cy.get('#payment-input').type('new value')
cy.get('#payment-input').blur()
For a stable element, chaining can be concise. When an application rerenders between steps, separate lookups make the fresh-query boundary explicit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why .then() and cy.wrap() may preserve a stale node
.then() is not retried. An element captured in its callback is a snapshot; if the application replaces it afterward, wrapping that same value with cy.wrap($el) does not rerun the locator or refresh the reference. Cypress describes the one-shot behavior in the cy.then() API documentation.
Use a retryable query or a query-replaying DOM alias when you need the current element. A .then() callback is appropriate when you deliberately need one-time access to the yielded value, not when you expect Cypress to rediscover a replacement node.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Increasing the timeout: A longer timeout can give a query more time to find a match, but it does not refresh a previously captured subject. Cypress documents a default command retry period of four seconds and recommends setting an individual timeout where a particular query needs more time; see Retry-ability in Cypress.
- Adding a fixed wait: A delay does not repair a chain anchored to an old node. Prefer retryable queries and assertions that wait for the relevant state rather than hard-coded pauses.
- Enabling test retries as the fix: Retries rerun a failed test when configured, which can help reveal flaky behavior, but they do not fix a stale subject within an individual attempt. Correct the query/action structure first. See Test Retries in Cypress.
- Chaining after a state-changing action: If the action can replace its subject, do not assume later chained work will start from the page again. End the chain and locate the target afresh.
- Reusing an element from .then(): The captured reference is not a live locator. Query again or use an alias that replays its query chain.
