Cypress automates Firefox through WebDriver BiDi. To run tests in Firefox, install a compatible Firefox version and select it with cypress run --browser firefox. Cypress 15.0.0–15.18.1 requires Firefox 135 or newer; Cypress 15.19.0 and later requires Firefox 140 or newer.
How Cypress uses WebDriver BiDi with Firefox
WebDriver BiDi is Cypress’s supported automation interface for Firefox. Cypress 15 removed its Firefox support for the older Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) path, so BiDi is the interface used for Firefox in Cypress 15 and later.
The change began earlier: Cypress 14.1.0 introduced BiDi for Firefox 135 and newer while retaining a CDP fallback for older Firefox versions. That fallback was removed in Cypress 15. The compatibility floor therefore depends on the Cypress version you run.
Check the Firefox version required by your Cypress version
| Cypress version | Minimum Firefox version | Firefox automation interface |
|---|---|---|
| 14.1.0–14.x | Firefox 135 or newer for BiDi; older versions used the CDP fallback | BiDi for Firefox 135 and newer; CDP fallback for older Firefox |
| 15.0.0–15.18.1 | Firefox 135 or newer | WebDriver BiDi |
| 15.19.0 and later | Firefox 140 or newer | WebDriver BiDi |
Cypress’s current browser guidance says Firefox versions below 140 implement BiDi incompletely and will fail. For Cypress 15.19.0 and later, use Firefox 140 or newer even though earlier Cypress 15 releases have a lower documented floor. If Firefox is pinned in an ESR installation, container image, or CI provider image, check that exact browser version before upgrading Cypress.

Run Cypress tests in Firefox
Run tests from the command line
With Cypress installed and a compatible Firefox available on the same local system or CI environment, run:
cypress run --browser firefox
Cypress detects browsers installed on the operating system; the command selects Firefox for that run. Firefox Developer Edition and Firefox Nightly are also documented Firefox-family options when installed locally.
Choose Firefox in the Cypress app
Start Cypress in open mode, then choose Firefox from the browser dropdown. The browser must be installed in the environment where Cypress is running.

What changes for existing tests—and what does not
The move to BiDi does not require changes to existing Cypress test commands. Cypress documents that commands behave the same in Firefox under BiDi. In Cypress 15, commands including cy.url(), cy.hash(), cy.go(), cy.reload(), cy.title(), and cy.location() use the automation client to return values. Cypress uses CDP for Chromium browsers and BiDi for Firefox for this behavior.

cy.window() still returns the current window object. However, some window properties can remain inaccessible depending on the origin context. Using BiDi does not remove browser security boundaries or make every Cypress feature identical across engines.
Firefox network interception remains a separate caveat
WebDriver BiDi is Firefox’s automation interface, but that does not mean Firefox uses Cypress’s native network interception path. Cypress’s documentation says Firefox and WebKit continue to use the legacy network path because a native browser network path has not been implemented for them. Chrome, Chromium, and Edge use the native path by default in the documented configuration.

When a test behaves differently across browsers, distinguish protocol-related automation behavior from network-interception behavior. The BiDi transition alone does not establish that an interception feature has the same implementation or behavior in Firefox as in Chromium.
Plan Firefox coverage in CI
Choose browser coverage in light of the confidence you need, test duration, and available CI capacity. Also ensure that the browser installed in each CI image meets the minimum for the Cypress version in that job. A Cypress upgrade can change the supported Firefox floor even when the test code stays unchanged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Record the Cypress and Firefox versions used by each job.
- Before upgrading Cypress, compare the pinned Firefox version with the applicable minimum above.
- If the pinned browser is too old, update the browser image before or alongside the Cypress upgrade.
- Keep cross-browser coverage aligned with the confidence and runtime your team can support.
Troubleshooting Firefox launches and behavior

Fix: Install Firefox in the environment running Cypress, then select it with cypress run --browser firefox or the open-mode browser dropdown.
Firefox launches but Cypress reports an unsupported or incomplete BiDi implementation
Cause: The installed Firefox is below the floor for the Cypress version. In particular, current guidance requires Firefox 140 or newer with Cypress 15.19.0 and later.
Fix: Upgrade the pinned Firefox installation or CI image to a supported version. Do not assume that an older ESR or provider image qualifies without checking its actual version.

A test using cy.window() cannot read a property
Cause: Some window properties may be inaccessible because of origin context; the protocol transition does not grant access across browser security boundaries.
Fix: Review whether the test is crossing origins and whether the property is accessible in that context. Do not treat this symptom by itself as evidence that Firefox is not using BiDi.
Network interception differs between Firefox and Chromium
Cause: Cypress documents that Firefox remains on the legacy network interception path while Chrome, Chromium, and Edge use the native path by default in the documented configuration.
Fix: Account for the browser-specific path when diagnosing interception behavior; BiDi controls Firefox automation but does not make its network interception implementation native.

For website screenshots rather than browser-driven Cypress tests, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace Cypress or validate your application’s behavior; it can capture a page without setting up a local browser automation run.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and formats:
