To visually test a Remix app with Cypress, run the app at a stable local URL, use Cypress end-to-end tests to reach a known page state, and pass a screenshot to an image-comparison plugin or service. cy.screenshot() captures an image; it does not compare that image with an approved baseline. Remix’s testing guide documents Playwright for its end-to-end workflow, so Cypress is a separate, external browser-testing setup rather than a first-party Remix integration.
What a visual regression test checks
A functional test can confirm that text appears or an element has a class. It cannot establish that the page’s layout, fonts, icons, colors, or rendered shapes look right. Visual regression testing captures the rendered interface and compares it with an approved baseline, then surfaces differences for review. See Cypress’s visual testing documentation.
Cypress can drive the browser and capture screenshots, but Cypress itself does not perform image comparison. The screenshot command is useful for capture and debugging, but a regression workflow needs a plugin or hosted service to compare images and support baseline review. See the cy.screenshot() API and Cypress’s visual testing guide.
Set up Cypress against a running Remix app
For routed pages and server-rendered behavior, use Cypress end-to-end tests against a Remix server running at a known local URL. Start the app with the development or preview command appropriate to your project; there is no single command that applies to every Remix deployment. Cypress recommends running the web server separately rather than starting it from a Cypress test script. Its guide shows a running local server and a configured baseUrl: Effective E2E testing in Cypress.

- Start Remix. Use the command and environment your project requires, and leave the server running while Cypress executes.
- Set Cypress’s base URL. In your Cypress configuration, set
baseUrlto the local address and port where the app is actually listening. Cypress configuration varies by project, so use the configuration file and format already installed in your app. - Visit the route in an E2E test. Use
cy.visit('/')or a route-specific path; Cypress resolves it againstbaseUrl. - Wait for the meaningful state. Assert a visible landmark or expected content before taking a screenshot, rather than relying on an arbitrary delay as proof that the page is ready.
Remix’s own testing guide describes its E2E path using the router behind a local HTTP server and a Playwright Page. That documents Remix’s recommended path; it does not mean Cypress cannot test a Remix application.
Write a visual checkpoint
The following is the Cypress E2E shape for opening a route, checking its state, and capturing the page. The final command is an illustrative capture only—not a visual comparison. Add the snapshot or comparison command documented by the plugin or service you choose; command names and baseline workflows differ by tool.

describe('Remix dashboard visual state', () => {
it('shows the populated dashboard', () => {
cy.visit('/dashboard');
cy.findByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' }).should('be.visible');
cy.findByText('Monthly revenue').should('be.visible');
// Capture only. This does not compare against a baseline.
cy.screenshot('dashboard-populated');
// Add your chosen image-comparison tool's snapshot command here.
});
});
This example assumes your app renders those labels and that the relevant Testing Library Cypress query commands are installed. If not, replace the queries with selectors and assertions supported by your project. The important sequence is to drive the UI to the intended state, assert that state, then invoke the comparison tool.
Choose a deliberate checkpoint, such as an open navigation menu, a populated dashboard, or form validation feedback. A small set of useful checkpoints is easier to review than snapshots of every route and state. Use an element-level capture when the goal is a particular component; use a full-page capture when page layout is what you need to guard.

Choose where image comparison and review happen
Cypress’s visual testing guide describes two broad approaches: open-source plugins that keep image comparison local or in CI, and hosted services that can manage capture, storage, comparison, rendering coverage, and review. These are workflow categories, not guarantees about any provider’s current features or price.
| Approach | What you manage or evaluate |
|---|---|
| Local or CI plugin | Comparison stays within your infrastructure; your team manages baseline storage, CI artifacts, and review. |
| Hosted visual-testing service | Evaluate the provider’s capture, storage, comparison, rendering coverage, review workflow, infrastructure and data controls, CI or pull-request integration, and subscription cost. |
Cypress documentation names integrations and services including Applitools Eyes, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. It also lists local or community options such as Cypress Image Diff and Cypress Image Snapshot. Treat this as a list of documented options, not a recommendation or a statement that every tool has the same capabilities. Check the vendor’s current Cypress compatibility, supported features, pricing, and terms before adopting one. Source: Cypress visual testing.

Make screenshots stable enough to compare
A pixel comparison is meaningful only when unrelated rendering differences are kept under control. Cypress’s screenshot API describes capture as asynchronous; the app can change before the image is taken. Establish the expected state before capture, and use a consistent environment for baseline creation and later comparisons. See the screenshot API and Cypress’s visual testing guidance.
- Fix the viewport. Use the same explicit viewport for baseline and comparison runs.
- Keep rendering consistent. Where possible, pin the browser version and use the same rendering environment when generating and comparing local pixel-diff baselines.
- Control data and time. Stub variable API responses with fixtures or intercepts, and control browser time when the page shows timestamps or other time-dependent content.
- Wait for the right signal. Assert that the expected content or UI state exists. Avoid treating a fixed sleep as a substitute for a state assertion.
- Finish or disable animation. Capture after transitions and CSS animations finish, or configure the test environment to avoid mid-animation frames.
- Mask sparingly. If a small region cannot be made deterministic, mask that region in the comparison tool rather than loosening a whole-page threshold and concealing meaningful changes.
Cypress identifies component testing as a natural fit for visual checks because it can isolate a component. However, Cypress’s current component-testing setup guide lists official framework and bundler setups without listing Remix. Treat mounting a Remix component in Cypress as project-specific: check your actual runtime and bundler requirements before relying on a copy-paste component setup. See Cypress component testing setup and visual testing.

Review changes without hiding regressions
- Run the test and inspect the generated diff using your plugin or service’s review workflow.
- Decide whether each visible change is intended. A changed baseline is not automatically a correct baseline.
- Approve and update a baseline only for an intentional design or content change.
- If a diff is noisy, first stabilize its data, time, viewport, rendering environment, and animation state. Mask only the genuinely uncontrollable region.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
cy.visit() cannot reach the app |
The Remix server is not running, is listening on a different port, or the configured baseUrl does not match. |
Start the app separately, confirm its local URL, and make baseUrl match that address. |
| The screenshot shows loading UI or incomplete content | The test captures before the route or required data reaches its intended state. | Wait on a meaningful visible assertion or deterministic network response before capturing. |
| Diffs change between identical-looking runs | Variable data, time, viewport, browser rendering, or an animation may be changing pixels. | Control the source of variation, fix the viewport and browser environment, and capture after animations complete. |
| A screenshot exists but the test does not fail on visual changes | cy.screenshot() only captures an image. |
Install and configure an image-comparison plugin or service, then invoke its documented comparison command. |
| A component test setup does not work with a Remix component | The project’s bundler or runtime may not match Cypress’s documented component setup. | Verify compatibility for your specific framework and bundler, or use E2E tests against the running Remix app. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate goal is to capture a page image rather than add a Cypress visual-regression test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. For example, this cURL request returns a WebP capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ
Does Cypress work with Remix?
Yes. Cypress can test a Remix app as an external browser-testing workflow by visiting its running server. Remix’s documented E2E guide uses Playwright; that distinction is about the documented integration, not a restriction on Cypress.
Can a Cypress visual test prove a page is correct?
It can flag a rendered difference from a baseline, but a person or review policy still needs to determine whether that difference is intended. A screenshot comparison does not replace functional assertions.

Can I use Cypress component testing instead of E2E?
Possibly, depending on the component and project setup. Cypress does not list Remix among the framework setups in its component testing guide, so verify your runtime and bundler requirements before choosing that path.
