To estimate visual testing costs, calculate your expected monthly checks in each vendor’s billing unit, then compare that volume with the plan allowance and overage terms. A test, screenshot, snapshot, and checkpoint are not interchangeable units: browser and viewport coverage can multiply what you consume.

What should you compare in visual testing pricing?

Start with your workload, not the advertised entry price. Compare the usage meter, included volume, overage, capture model, browser coverage, review workflow, and contract terms. A lower-priced plan may cover less of your real workload if its usage unit or included allowance differs.

  • Billing unit: Find out whether the vendor counts screenshots, snapshots, page checkpoints, or component checkpoints, and how browsers and widths affect the count.
  • Included usage and overage: Compare the plan allowance with your estimated volume and find out what happens when you exceed it.
  • Coverage and workflow: Check browser and device breadth, local versus cloud rendering, pull-request review and approval, CI integration, and controls for limiting test volume.
  • Contract terms: Verify annual billing requirements, usage caps, overage treatment, concurrency limits, and parallel-run constraints directly with the vendor.

How do you estimate monthly visual testing usage?

Use this as a first-pass planning formula:

Checks or stories × monthly builds × browsers × responsive widths

For example, two pages captured in two browsers at three responsive widths produce 12 screenshot combinations under Percy’s definition. BrowserStack says: “A screenshot is a rendering of a page or component in an individual browser and responsive width combination.” See BrowserStack’s Percy plan and billing documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Count the pages, components, or stories you expect to check.
  2. Multiply by monthly builds, target browsers, and responsive widths as a starting estimate.
  3. Add retries and reruns if they are common, and account for accessibility captures or other vendor-specific multipliers where applicable.
  4. Convert that estimate into each vendor’s actual billing unit. Do not treat a screenshot count as equivalent to a checkpoint or snapshot count.
  5. Compare the resulting volume with included usage and overage, then confirm the vendor’s billing rules and contract terms.

This is a planning aid, not a universal billing formula. Vendors define and count their units differently, and a vendor may apply additional multipliers or optimization rules.

How do published plans compare?

The figures below are not a synchronized quote sheet. BrowserStack and Applitools figures come from their official pages; Argos and Chromatic figures were reported by Argos CI in a vendor-authored comparison that says it checked official pricing pages in July 2026. Confirm volatile prices and terms on each vendor’s live page before buying.

Vendor Published or reported plan Meter and qualification
BrowserStack Percy Desktop: $199/month billed annually for 10,000 screenshots/month. Desktop & Mobile: $599/month billed annually for 25,000 screenshots/month. The official plans and billing documentation also lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots. A screenshot is one page or component, browser, and responsive-width combination. Official vendor information; check the live pricing page for current terms.
Applitools Starter: $667/month paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints. Professional and Enterprise: customizable options. Checkpoint allowances are not directly comparable to screenshot or snapshot counts. Official vendor information.
Argos Pro: $100/month for 35,000 screenshots; reported overage of $0.004 per screenshot and $0.0015 for Storybook screenshots. Reported by Argos CI in its vendor-authored comparison, which says it checked official vendor pages in July 2026. Verify current terms.
Chromatic Starter: $179/month for 35,000 snapshots; the same comparison reports Pro at $399/month and $0.008 per extra snapshot. Reported by Argos CI in July 2026. Snapshot volume may multiply by browsers and viewports; verify current terms.

Older comparison pages have reported a $599 starting price for Percy, but BrowserStack’s official pricing page lists a lower Desktop plan. For Percy, use its live official page rather than an older third-party figure.

How much does visual testing cost per month?

There is no single useful monthly cost without your volume and coverage. The public examples above range from BrowserStack Percy’s listed $199/month Desktop plan billed annually to Applitools Starter at $667/month paid annually, but their allowances use different units. Argos and Chromatic amounts are dated July 2026 reports rather than live quotes. Calculate your own monthly volume and verify current prices before selecting a tier.

Is free visual testing enough?

It may be enough for a small workload if its allowance covers the checks, build frequency, browsers, and widths you need. The official Percy documentation lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots. Compare that allowance with your estimated consumption using Percy’s browser-and-width definition; a free quota in one vendor’s unit cannot be compared directly with another vendor’s checkpoint or snapshot allowance.

Which plan details should you verify before committing?

  • Whether the listed amount requires annual billing and whether it recurs monthly or is a one-time offer.
  • Exactly what the vendor counts as a screenshot, snapshot, page checkpoint, or component checkpoint.
  • Whether browser, device, viewport, build, retry, or rerun choices increase usage.
  • Included volume, overage rates, usage caps, and what happens when an allowance is exceeded.
  • Concurrency or parallel-run restrictions that could affect CI throughput.
  • Whether capture is local or cloud-based, which browsers and devices are covered, and how results are reviewed and approved.
  • Current contract and cancellation terms, confirmed directly with the vendor.

Screenshot capture alternative: ScreenshotNeo

Visual regression platforms meter and manage comparison workflows; a screenshot API is a different tool for capturing pages, not a substitute for a visual testing plan. If your immediate need is reliable website screenshots for a test pipeline or agent workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

ScreenshotNeo’s one-request API returns an image or PDF. For its parameters and options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
