Applitools supports PDF visual testing through more than one route: run PDF checks as an Eyes batch job, open a PDF in an Applitools Autonomous custom flow, or use Applitools’ ImageTester command-line tool for standalone document files. Choose based on whether your PDFs are files to compare or part of an interactive application flow. The current SDK documentation should be checked for the exact PDF workflow and syntax for your framework; there is no single PDF-specific code example established across all Eyes SDKs.
Choose the PDF testing route that fits your workflow
| Route | Best fit | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes batch job | PDFs generated in batches that need visual comparison against approved baselines | Applitools’ PDF page describes batch PDF checks. Confirm setup and supported syntax for your selected SDK in the Eyes SDK documentation. |
| Autonomous custom flow | A PDF is part of a larger test flow, or testers need document-specific interactions | Open a PDF as the flow’s start URL or navigate to one mid-flow; the product page describes page navigation, text assertions, fillable-form support, and use of uploaded PDFs. |
| ImageTester CLI | A collection of standalone PDFs, images, or other documents | The Applitools-maintained repository documents a CLI for individual files and directory trees. Follow its current usage instructions rather than relying on old command examples. |
Applitools’ PDF testing page describes both batch checks in Eyes and direct PDF use in Autonomous. Its July 27, 2026 product announcement specifically describes opening PDFs in Autonomous custom flows. These are distinct workflows: do not assume that Autonomous interactions are available through every Eyes SDK.
Use an Eyes batch job for generated-file comparisons
Choose this route when your application produces PDFs such as invoices, statements, contracts, or reports and the main question is whether a new output differs visually from an approved version. Verify the selected SDK’s current PDF setup before writing test code: the SDK chooser lists a PDFs/Images category, but the available documentation does not establish one universal PDF API or complete PDF-specific code sample for every SDK.
Use Autonomous when the PDF belongs to a flow
Autonomous custom flows can start at a PDF or navigate to one during a test. Applitools describes page navigation, text assertions, fillable PDF forms, and uploaded user PDFs referenced from a test step. This is the route to investigate if the test needs to interact with document pages or fields, rather than only compare a generated file. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use ImageTester for standalone files
The maintained Applitools ImageTester repository describes a CLI for PDFs, images, Office files, and more, including single-file and directory-tree use. Use the repository’s current README for installation and command syntax; older tutorials may no longer match the maintained tool.
Understand the Eyes baseline and review cycle
Visual testing compares a captured checkpoint with an approved baseline. Applitools’ general Eyes workflow is to capture checkpoints, compare them with stored references, review differences in Test Manager, and save accepted changes as the new baseline. On a first run, checkpoints can establish the initial reference; later runs surface changes for review. See the Eyes visual testing overview and system overview.

- Generate or provide the PDF using stable test data where practical.
- Run the chosen PDF workflow to create a checkpoint or comparison result.
- Inspect the changed page and region. Decide whether each change is an intended content update or a defect.
- Save a new baseline only when the document change is expected; otherwise keep the existing reference and fix the underlying issue.
Applitools describes Visual AI as checking pages and surfacing changed regions. Review is still necessary: an altered total may be correct business data, while a shifted dense table, footnote, or wrapped legal clause may signal a layout regression.
Set up a reliable PDF visual test
- Stabilize inputs: keep dates, account values, generated identifiers, and other variable fields fixed where the test allows it. This makes meaningful layout changes easier to distinguish from routine data changes.
- Check the exact page and region: inspect dense tables, footnotes, and legal text where wrapping or pagination changes can affect readability.
- Separate content assertions from appearance: use text assertions where the Autonomous flow supports them, and use visual comparison to inspect placement, spacing, and presentation.
- Review before approving: avoid accepting a broad set of differences without checking whether the changed pages reflect an intended release.
- Match the implementation to the product route: SDK-specific batch setup, Autonomous flow steps, and ImageTester CLI usage are not interchangeable.
Troubleshoot common PDF testing problems
You cannot find a PDF code sample for your SDK
PDF support is not documented as one universal API across all Eyes SDKs. Start at Choosing an SDK, select the framework you actually use, and verify its current PDF workflow. The Java Selenium quickstart is a web-test guide, not a general PDF setup guide.

The comparison reports many differences between runs
Check whether the PDF contains changing test data, timestamps, generated IDs, or variable pagination. Stabilize the input values where possible, then inspect individual affected pages before changing the baseline.
A PDF flow needs navigation, text checks, or form filling
Confirm that the test is using the Autonomous custom-flow capability described on the current PDF testing page. Do not assume those interactions are available in a standalone Eyes SDK checkpoint workflow.

An ImageTester command from a tutorial fails
Check the current ImageTester repository for supported installation and command syntax. The older PDF tutorial can provide background, but should not be treated as definitive current CLI documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before implementation
Choose the route, then confirm the exact supported workflow and setup in its current documentation. For Eyes SDK batch testing, verify the chosen language and framework’s PDF support; for Autonomous, verify the custom-flow steps and document operations needed; for ImageTester, use the maintained repository instructions. The general Java Selenium quickstart covers a Java Selenium web test and should not be mistaken for PDF-specific setup guidance.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of the rendered PDF page or a related webpage rather than an Applitools baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It can accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with verdict and billing details in response headers. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
