To interact with an element inside a Shadow DOM using Selenium, first locate its shadow host in the ordinary document, get the host’s shadow root with your Selenium language binding, and find the target element from that root. In Python, use host.shadow_root; in JavaScript and Java, use getShadowRoot(). You usually do not need JavaScript execution for this: Selenium provides a native Shadow DOM API.
How Selenium Shadow DOM lookup works
A shadow host is an element in the regular page DOM whose component attaches a shadow root. Elements inside that root are not found by an ordinary document-level lookup. The search context must change after you locate the host:
- Use
driver.find_element(...)to locate the host in the document. - Get the host’s shadow root using the API for your Selenium binding.
- Call
find_elementor the binding’s equivalent on the shadow root to locate a descendant.
For nested web components, repeat the same sequence: locate the nested host from the current shadow root, obtain its root, then search within that root.
Python: find and click an element in a shadow root
This example uses Selenium’s Python API and an explicit wait for the host to appear. It assumes driver has already been created and navigated to the page containing my-component.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
host = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.presence_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "my-component"))
)
shadow_root = host.shadow_root
button = shadow_root.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
button.click()
The key distinction is the lookup context: driver searches the document, while shadow_root searches inside that particular root. Use shadow_root.find_elements(...) when you need all matching descendants rather than the first match.
Wait for a descendant when the component renders asynchronously
Waiting for the host’s presence does not guarantee that the component has finished attaching its root or rendering the target control. If the component is dynamic, wait for the condition your page exposes before looking up the descendant. One simple polling pattern is:
from selenium.common.exceptions import NoSuchElementException
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
host = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
lambda d: d.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "my-component")
)
def find_submit_button(_driver):
try:
return host.shadow_root.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
except NoSuchElementException:
return False
button = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(find_submit_button)
button.click()
This retries when the descendant is not present yet. If accessing host.shadow_root itself fails because no root is attached, wait for the component’s readiness condition or retry root access as well; do not treat a missing root as the same thing as a missing button.

JavaScript and Java syntax
JavaScript
The Selenium JavaScript binding returns a promise from getShadowRoot(), so await it before searching. This assumes driver is an initialized WebDriver and has opened the relevant page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsconst host = await driver.findElement(By.css('my-component'));
const shadowRoot = await host.getShadowRoot();
const button = await shadowRoot.findElement(By.css('button.submit'));
await button.click();
Java
In Java, getShadowRoot() returns a SearchContext, which can be used to find descendants.
WebElement host = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("my-component"));
SearchContext shadowRoot = host.getShadowRoot();
WebElement button = shadowRoot.findElement(By.cssSelector("button.submit"));
button.click();
These examples use binding-specific syntax: Python exposes the root as a property, JavaScript uses an asynchronous method, and Java returns a SearchContext. Do not copy Python’s property syntax into JavaScript or Java.

Browser support and version checks
The Selenium Python WebElement reference documents Shadow DOM support from Chromium 96, Firefox 96, and Safari 16.4 onward. Those are thresholds stated in that Python reference, not a guarantee for every Selenium binding, browser build, driver, or deployment. Confirm the Selenium binding, browser, and driver versions actually used by your test matrix.
The relevant API documentation is not presented as one synchronized release: the Python ShadowRoot reference surfaced as Selenium 4.50.0, the Python WebElement page title as 4.33.0, and the Java API reference as 4.28.0. Check the documentation corresponding to the binding version installed in your project.

Element not found inside the root
Verify the descendant selector against the markup inside the component’s shadow tree, and confirm that the element has rendered. Make sure the lookup is called on the returned shadow root rather than on driver or another document-level context.
Stale element or detached shadow root after a rerender
A root reference can become detached when its host is stale or its node document is no longer the active document. After navigation, replacement, or a component rerender, reacquire the host from the current document and get a fresh root. Do not assume a previously saved host or root remains valid.
Works locally but fails in another browser or driver
Check the exact Selenium binding, browser, and driver versions in both environments. The Python reference’s documented browser thresholds do not establish support for every combination. Reproduce with the same versions used in CI before changing selectors or adding a JavaScript workaround.

Do you need JavaScript to access Shadow DOM?
Usually not. When your Selenium binding and browser support the native API, use the host’s shadow-root method or property and search from the returned root. WebDriver’s protocol includes dedicated shadow-root references and commands. The W3C WebDriver specification describing this protocol is a Working Draft dated 2026-05-28, not a finalized recommendation.
JavaScript execution may still be useful for page-specific tasks, but it is not the default way to cross a shadow boundary when the native Selenium API is available. Prefer the native method for ordinary element lookup and interaction.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean screenshot rather than interacting with an element, ScreenshotNeo can return a page capture with one GET request. It is a screenshot API, not a replacement for Selenium element interaction.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I access a closed shadow root with Selenium’s native Shadow DOM API?
The documented host-to-shadow-root workflow applies when the browser exposes an attached root through WebDriver. The cited material does not establish a general method for reaching closed roots.
Does Selenium’s ShadowRoot support finding multiple elements?
Yes. Python’s ShadowRoot API documents both find_element and find_elements.
