Before making a new or redesigned website public, check the production site—not just the staging build—for accessibility, accurate content, working user journeys, search visibility, HTTPS, and performance. Then repeat the checks after deployment: hosting, final assets, redirects, and third-party services can behave differently in production.
Start with the production version
Use the public hostname and the configuration visitors will actually receive. Review representative pages on desktop and mobile, and test the actions that matter to the site: submitting a form, signing in, booking, checking out, or downloading a file. A checklist helps surface common launch defects; it is not a substitute for a technical audit or a guarantee of search visibility, security, or accessibility.
Confirm the site is clear and complete
- Make sure the home page explains who the site serves, what it offers, and what visitors can do next.
- Review page titles, headings, body copy, calls to action, form labels, contact details, and legal or policy pages for accuracy and consistency.
- Follow the main navigation, internal links, and footer links. Look for dead ends, misleading labels, missing expected pages, and links that point to staging.
- Check images and media for appropriate text alternatives, captions, or transcripts where needed.
Check accessibility and interaction
Use W3C’s WCAG 2 overview and the WCAG 2.2 standard as references. WCAG organizes requirements under perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust principles. Select and state a conformance level that fits the project and applicable obligations; this checklist is not a legal determination.
Keyboard, focus, and display
- Navigate with a keyboard alone. Confirm links, buttons, menus, and other interactive controls can be reached and operated.
- Check that keyboard focus is visible and is not hidden by sticky headers, dialogs, or other overlays.
- Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning. Check that text and controls remain distinguishable.
- Review target sizes, browser zoom, and common viewport sizes. WCAG 2.2 includes criteria on minimum target size and focus not being obscured.
Images, forms, and account flows
- Give meaningful non-text content useful text alternatives, subject to WCAG’s defined exceptions.
- Complete each form from beginning to end. Check labels and instructions, required-field cues, validation, understandable error recovery, confirmation, and whether the expected recipient or system receives the submission.
- For account and checkout flows, check whether users can complete authentication and avoid unnecessary repeated entry where relevant. WCAG 2.2 includes criteria concerning accessible authentication and redundant entry.
Automated accessibility scans can help identify issues, but they cannot establish conformance on their own. Manual checks and, where appropriate, assistive-technology evaluation provide additional information. WCAG conformance depends on meeting its success criteria, not on a general impression that a site seems accessible.

Verify search visibility and indexing controls
Check the deployed host, not only staging. Pages intended for public discovery should not be accidentally blocked or marked noindex; private, test, and staging content should not be exposed as public launch content.
- Review canonical URLs, page titles, descriptions, internal links, and sitemap configuration where applicable.
- Check that redirects lead to the intended public URLs and that internal links do not keep visitors on a staging hostname.
- Use Google Search Essentials as an eligibility reference. Eligibility does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or rank.
Confirm HTTPS and production security basics
Google recommends HTTPS for user and site security. Visit the production URL over HTTPS, check that the certificate is accepted by browsers, and confirm expected HTTP requests redirect to the canonical HTTPS destination. Investigate browser warnings and mixed content, where a secure page requests resources over an insecure connection.

- Remove exposed test accounts, sample data, and staging configuration that should not be public.
- For sites handling accounts, payments, or personal data, include a deployment-specific security review and know how to respond to an incident or roll back a faulty release.
These checks are not a complete security audit. The right additional review depends on the site’s technology, integrations, and the data it handles.
Measure performance on representative pages
Test important pages at mobile and desktop sizes and under realistic device and network conditions. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance identifies LCP, INP, and CLS as the current Core Web Vitals and points site owners to the Core Web Vitals report for site-wide field data and PageSpeed Insights for individual URLs. Consult Google’s live guidance and tools for current definitions and thresholds, and collect readings from the actual site rather than assuming a checklist predicts its results.

Field data may not be available for every new or low-traffic page. Use page-level diagnostics to investigate URLs that need attention, and recheck after launch: production hosting, third-party scripts, actual traffic, and final media assets can affect the measured experience.
Test the site’s critical journeys
Choose checks based on the audience, content, integrations, and purpose of this particular site. Run each important journey in the production environment and confirm both the visitor-facing result and the expected outcome behind the scenes.

- Submit contact, signup, or support forms and verify delivery to the expected recipient or system.
- Test account creation and sign-in, search, checkout, booking, downloads, or other flows the site depends on.
- Open embedded media and exercise third-party integrations. Check analytics and consent configuration where applicable.
- Check important redirects and links after deployment, not only in the editor or staging environment.
- Make sure the team knows how it will monitor launch issues and restore service or content if a defect appears. Backup, restore, and rollback steps depend on the platform.
