Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, and its project site advises against adopting it for new work. If you maintain an existing suite, its historical multi-browser setup used WebDriver capabilities; the practical next step is to document the browsers your application promises to support and plan a migration rather than assume old configurations still work. The Protractor project site explains its status and migration recommendation.
What Protractor did—and how Selenium fit in
Protractor was an end-to-end test framework for Angular and AngularJS applications, written for Node.js and built on WebDriverJS. It drove a real browser through WebDriver. Selenium WebDriver was therefore not a separate browser engine bolted onto Protractor: it was the underlying automation layer.
Protractor’s distinctive Angular-aware synchronization included waitForAngular, which waited for the application to become stable. The Angular team later said this behavior coupled the runner closely to Angular. Its deprecation rationale called Selenium WebDriver the closest migration fit in API terms because Protractor used it underneath. “Closest” does not mean identical: expect to adapt APIs and test patterns rather than perform a mechanical rename. The Angular team’s deprecation rationale describes the reasoning and alternatives.
Is Protractor still supported?
No. Protractor reached end of life in August 2023. Its official site discourages new adoption and recommends that existing users migrate. Archived examples remain useful for understanding old suites, but they do not establish that a particular Protractor, browser, driver, or runner combination works today.

The Angular team’s January 2021 survey received close to 1,000 responses, and fewer than 20% of respondents used Protractor. Those figures describe that historical survey only; they are not a current adoption estimate. The team also emphasized that no single testing platform fits every Angular project.
How multi-browser runs worked in Protractor
Historically, a single-browser run used capabilities; a multi-browser run used multiCapabilities. The archived tutorial showed Firefox and Chrome configured separately so results were reported for each browser. The configuration reference also documented remote providers, including BrowserStack and Sauce Labs. These examples explain the old configuration model, not present-day driver compatibility. Consult the archived Protractor configuration reference and archived browser setup tutorial as historical material, then verify every component against current documentation before attempting to run it.

What the old configuration meant
capabilitiesdescribed a browser configuration for a run.multiCapabilitiessupplied several browser configurations, allowing the suite to run against each target and report results by configuration.- Remote-provider settings pointed execution at a hosted browser service instead of only a locally managed browser.
Because Protractor is end-of-life, this is not a current, dependable setup recipe. In particular, do not infer that an archived browser name, driver manager, provider option, or sample version remains compatible with current browsers.
Choose browser coverage from your product’s support promise
Start with the browsers and versions your application actually supports, informed by your users, release policy, and risk—not simply by a framework’s advertised browser list. Angular’s current browser-compatibility documentation describes support using a Baseline date for each major release and identifies Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari in its core browser set. That framework guidance does not automatically define the coverage your own application has tested or promised. See Angular’s browser compatibility documentation.

- Write down the supported environments. Include browser families and any version or platform limits your product commits to.
- Prioritize risk. Keep broad coverage for critical user journeys, and reserve less frequent or remote runs for environments that are costly to maintain.
- Decide where browsers run. Determine whether local CI coverage is sufficient or whether you need remote browser environments; verify the chosen service’s current browser inventory and operating details directly.
- Make coverage explicit in CI. Record which browser configurations run on each pull request or scheduled job, and make failures attributable to a specific environment.
- Revisit the matrix deliberately. Align changes with your product support policy and browser updates rather than inheriting an old Protractor list indefinitely.
Plan a Protractor migration
The Angular team recommended moving to a modern, framework-agnostic platform and named Selenium WebDriver, Cypress, Playwright, Puppeteer, TestCafe, and WebdriverIO as examples—not a ranking or exhaustive list. The right candidate depends on your browser needs, Angular coupling, migration cost, CI operation, and maintenance model.
| Candidate | What the cited Angular material establishes | Questions for your migration |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium WebDriver | Closest API fit in the Angular team’s rationale because Protractor used it underneath; APIs are not identical. | How much can your existing WebDriver-oriented code be reused, and what runner, synchronization, and CI changes are needed? |
| WebdriverIO | Current Angular testing documentation describes it as a browser and mobile automation framework supporting Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. | Does its current workflow fit your team’s required browsers, mobile coverage, debugging, and CI needs? |
| Cypress, Playwright, Puppeteer, TestCafe | Named by the Angular team as alternatives in its deprecation rationale. | Check current official documentation for browser coverage, execution model, remote environments, and migration work; the cited rationale does not rank or compare them. |
Angular’s current overview describes WebdriverIO as one option; that is not a claim that it is the best choice for every project. Angular’s testing overview provides its current testing context.

A migration sequence that reduces surprises
- Inventory the suite. Group tests by user journey, browser requirement, reliance on Angular-specific synchronization, and dependency on Protractor-only helpers.
- Separate behavior from framework glue. Identify selectors, setup code, waits, and helpers that encode runner details. Replace implicit assumptions with explicit, observable conditions where appropriate in the target framework.
- Select a target against real constraints. Evaluate required browsers and remote environments, framework coupling, API conversion effort, parallel CI execution, debugging, and ongoing maintenance. Avoid choosing solely because a tool’s syntax looks familiar.
- Prove a representative path. Port a small but meaningful journey, then run it in the browsers and CI environments that matter. This surfaces gaps in synchronization, test isolation, and infrastructure before bulk conversion.
- Migrate in slices and compare outcomes. Move coherent test groups, track coverage against the support matrix, and retire old execution only after the replacement covers the required journeys.
Troubleshooting legacy-suite decisions
- An archived config fails against a current browser: the example documents historical Protractor behavior, not current compatibility. Verify the browser, driver, Protractor dependencies, and runner together; prioritize migration rather than repeatedly patching an unsupported stack.
- A test hangs while waiting for Angular: old synchronization was tied to application stability and Angular. During migration, identify the actual UI condition the test needs to observe and use the target framework’s current documented wait mechanism.
- Local tests pass but CI or remote runs fail: compare the browser/driver versions, environment, network access, and configuration used by each run. Check current provider documentation; the archived Protractor reference naming a service does not validate its present capabilities.
- Coverage claims are unclear: distinguish a framework’s documented browser support from the browsers your team actually tests and the browsers your product promises to support. Keep that matrix in project documentation and CI configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium WebDriver make a Protractor migration a one-to-one rewrite?
No. Selenium WebDriver was the underlying layer and the closest API fit named by Angular, but the APIs are not identical.
Does Angular’s browser list tell me which browsers my app supports?
No. Use your own product’s support commitment to define tested coverage; Angular’s framework guidance is context, not your application’s policy.
