You can use Gherkin feature files with Cypress by configuring the community-maintained @badeball/cypress-cucumber-preprocessor and connecting its preprocessing flow to Cypress’s Node event hook. First make the feature specs run locally; then configure HyperExecute using its current Cypress-specific runner and YAML documentation. The available HyperExecute material does not establish the required Cypress Cucumber YAML keys or command, so this guide does not guess them or reuse Java/TestNG settings.

What the Cypress Cucumber preprocessor does

Cypress describes a preprocessor as “the plugin responsible for preparing a support file or a test file for the browser.” The @badeball/cypress-cucumber-preprocessor community plugin lets Cypress run specs written in Cucumber/Gherkin syntax. Cypress lists the package as community-owned, not as a built-in Cypress feature. Cypress plugin catalog

The preprocessor connects feature files and step definitions to Cypress’s test execution. It does not make WebDriver commands work inside Cypress: when migrating an existing Selenium/Cucumber suite, the feature files can often remain largely unchanged, but step-definition browser operations need to be rewritten as Cypress commands. Cypress Selenium-to-Cypress migration guide

Check Cypress and plugin compatibility

The Cypress catalog showed @badeball/cypress-cucumber-preprocessor version 28.0.0, updated September 2026, with compatibility listed for Cypress ^13.0.0, ^14.0.0, select 15.16 through 15.18 releases, and ^16.0.0. Check the package’s current peer requirements against the exact Cypress version in your project before upgrading; the catalog range is not a substitute for checking the installed package’s current documentation. • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the package’s maintained README for its installation steps, supported bundler integration, feature-file discovery conventions, and package-specific setup. Cypress’s event API explains where a preprocessor connects, but it does not establish a particular Cucumber plugin call or bundler configuration. @badeball/cypress-cucumber-preprocessor README

Configure the Cypress preprocessing hook

Cypress exposes preprocessing through the file:preprocessor event registered in setupNodeEvents. The event handler must produce the browser-ready file, write it, and resolve with its output path only when that file is ready. Cypress treats resolution as the signal that the file can be served to the browser. Cypress Preprocessors API

  1. Follow the package README. Install the Cucumber preprocessor and the bundler integration it currently documents for your project. Do not infer package-specific calls from the Cypress event API alone.
  2. Register preprocessing in the Node events setup. In the project’s Cypress configuration, connect the package’s documented integration to the file:preprocessor event from setupNodeEvents.
  3. Return the completed output path. Ensure the handler resolves only after processing has written the file Cypress will serve. If using a bundler, follow its required source-map setup; Cypress notes that source maps affect code-frame debugging.
  4. Check repeated calls and cleanup. Cypress may call the handler multiple times for one source path. Avoid creating a fresh watcher on every invocation, and clean up watchers on the file’s close event when appropriate.
  5. Run one feature locally. Verify that Cypress discovers the intended .feature file, loads its step definitions, and executes a scenario before expanding the suite or moving it to cloud execution.

There is no universal copy-paste cypress.config.* snippet here because the package’s current bundler and plugin setup must come from its own maintained instructions. The Cypress event contract is stable guidance for the connection point, not proof of a particular package API. Cypress Preprocessors API

Match the config file to your module system

Use the module format that matches your repository and Node.js configuration. From Cypress 15.17.0 onward, Cypress determines whether a config file is ESM or CommonJS before executing it, using Node.js module rules. If loading fails, it does not fall back to the other format. • If a config stops loading after a Cypress upgrade, check the file extension and package module settings before changing the preprocessor integration.

Adapt existing WebDriver step definitions

Existing Gherkin scenarios can often be kept largely as-is, but step-definition implementations need to express browser actions using Cypress. Cypress’s migration guide illustrates visiting a page with cy.visit('/') and checking a search input with cy.get('input[type="search"]').should('be.visible'). Replace WebDriver calls with Cypress commands and assertions; do not treat Selenium operations as interchangeable with Cypress APIs. Cypress Selenium-to-Cypress migration guide

Move the working suite to HyperExecute carefully

HyperExecute is presented by LambdaTest as a cloud test execution platform. However, the available HyperExecute material does not verify a current Cypress-specific YAML schema, runner command, feature discovery configuration, browser/runtime configuration, or report collection procedure for this Cucumber setup. 1. Get the current Cypress-specific instructions. Consult official HyperExecute documentation or the current documentation available in your account for the runner command and supported YAML keys for Cypress.
  2. Configure only documented values. Set test discovery, runtime, browser, and report collection using settings explicitly documented for Cypress on HyperExecute.
  3. Run a minimal feature first. Start with one small .feature spec to confirm that the cloud runner finds the spec and its step definitions.
  4. Expand after the first run succeeds. Add the rest of the suite and any documented reporting or parallel execution settings only after the initial feature passes.

Do not copy Java/TestNG framework identifiers, Maven commands, feature-path keys, or tag-filter settings into Cypress YAML unless current Cypress-specific HyperExecute documentation says they apply. The existence of HyperExecute TestNG examples does not establish a Cypress configuration.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

  • Cypress cannot load the config: Check whether ESM or CommonJS syntax matches the project’s module rules. For Cypress 15.17.0 and later, do not expect Cypress to retry the other module format.
  • A feature spec is not discovered: Confirm the package’s current feature-file discovery conventions and the Cypress-specific HyperExecute test-discovery configuration. Do not assume Java-oriented feature path keys apply.
  • The browser reports a missing or unavailable processed file: Ensure the file:preprocessor handler resolves with the output path only after the processed file has been written.
  • Repeated preprocessing creates extra watchers: Cypress may invoke the handler more than once for a source path. Avoid starting a new watcher per invocation and clean up on close where appropriate.
  • Step definitions fail on WebDriver calls: Rewrite browser actions and assertions using Cypress commands; retaining a Gherkin scenario does not make its underlying Selenium implementation compatible.
  • Errors point to generated code instead of the source: Review the bundler’s source-map configuration. Cypress notes that third-party bundlers may need source-map configuration for useful code frames; follow the preprocessor’s current bundler guidance.
  • A guessed HyperExecute command or YAML key fails: Replace it with the current documented Cypress runner configuration. TestNG examples do not establish Cypress syntax.

Or skip the browser setup

For website screenshots rather than Cypress test execution, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for the Cucumber preprocessor or HyperExecute test runner.
