Reliable Cucumber automation starts with scenarios that describe one observable behavior, establish their own starting state, and can run independently. Treat Gherkin as a shared, executable specification—not as a substitute for the collaborative practice of behavior-driven development (BDD)—and keep implementation mechanics in step definitions and helpers.
What Cucumber is—and what it is not
Cucumber connects examples written in Gherkin to executable code. Feature files can serve at once as specifications, automated tests, and documentation of system behavior, and are typically kept in version control alongside the software. But writing Given/When/Then scripts alone is not BDD: Cucumber’s BDD documentation says, “There’s much more to BDD than just using Cucumber.” BDD involves iterative collaboration to discover concrete examples, formulate and agree on them in a human- and machine-readable form, then automate them against the system. Cucumber’s BDD documentation
Use feature text to communicate behavior and intent. It need not expose every test-data detail or the mechanics of how the application is driven.
How to write a focused, dependable scenario
Give each scenario one purpose
A scenario should exercise one behavior and produce a failure that points to that behavior. If one example combines several independent outcomes, a failure is harder to diagnose; undefined, pending, or failed steps also cause later steps in that scenario to be skipped. Separate independent outcomes into separate scenarios.

Use Given, When, and Then for distinct roles
- Given establishes a known starting state or precondition.
- When describes the event or action being exercised.
- Then checks an observable result.
Keep the result assertion in the Then behavior; a Then should not merely perform another action. Cucumber recommends three to five steps per example as a useful writing guide, not as a strict limit or a performance measure. Gherkin reference
Prefer domain language over implementation choreography
Write the behavior in terms people who understand the domain can discuss. For example, “Then the user will be notified” can remain meaningful if the delivery channel changes. A scenario spelling out clicks, internal database rows, or a particular notification mechanism is more tightly coupled to implementation. Put those mechanics in step definitions or helper code when they are needed to drive and verify the behavior.
How detailed should my scenarios be?
Detailed enough to make the behavior, relevant starting conditions, and expected result clear; not so detailed that the feature becomes a script of incidental mechanics. Use the three-to-five-step recommendation as a prompt to check whether an example is focused and expressive, not as a reason to omit a meaningful precondition or assertion.

When a precondition matters to shared understanding, state it in the scenario or a readable Background. Keep low-level setup in helpers or lifecycle hooks if exposing it would obscure the example. Cucumber’s guides
How to make scenarios independent and reproducible
Each scenario should arrange the state it needs and be runnable in any order. Do not rely on a previous scenario to create a user, leave data behind, or establish a session. This independence makes failures easier to interpret and allows scenarios to run in different orders or in parallel without interfering.
- Identify the data and environment each scenario requires.
- Create or arrange that state for the scenario rather than borrowing side effects from another example.
- Use shared helper methods for repeated setup, such as logging in, without calling one scenario from another.
- Check whether cleanup or shared resources could affect another scenario.
Scenario isolation is a design practice, not a guarantee against every source of flakiness. External services, timing, and environment behavior can still matter.

How to keep step definitions clear and unambiguous
Step definitions connect Gherkin text to code. Make their matching expressions narrow enough that a step has one intended definition, and move repeated implementation work into shared helpers. Cucumber ignores the Given, When, or Then keyword when matching the step text, so changing a keyword does not make otherwise identical text a different match. Duplicate or overlapping expressions can therefore create ambiguity. Step definitions
Make assertions explicit. A step succeeds when its implementation completes without raising an error; returning false or another falsy value does not by itself fail the step. Raise an error or use the assertion mechanism appropriate to your language and test framework when the outcome is wrong. Cucumber API

Put meaningful shared preconditions where readers can see them
A Background can express setup shared by the scenarios in a feature when that setup helps explain their context. A Before hook may be appropriate for lifecycle work, but setup hidden in a hook is invisible in the feature text. If a precondition is important to understanding the behavior, make it explicit in the Background or scenario instead of concealing it in setup code.

Use hooks for lifecycle work
Use hooks for appropriate setup and teardown, and conditional hooks only when they are clearer than explicit scenario setup. Hooks complement readable scenarios; they do not replace them.
Use tags to organize and select tests
Tags can organize features and scenarios, select subsets for execution, and restrict hooks to matching scenarios. Keep the tag vocabulary small and tied to real execution needs, so selection rules remain understandable. Cucumber API
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Parallel execution: keep worker state separate
Parallel lifecycle behavior depends on the Cucumber implementation and version. In cucumber-js, BeforeAll and AfterAll hooks run once per worker by default in parallel mode. For setup that must happen once for the entire run, cucumber-js documents coordinator hooks; this capability was added in v13.2.0. Keep scenario state independent regardless of the hook arrangement. Do not assume these APIs or defaults apply to Cucumber for the JVM, Ruby, or other implementations; consult the versioned documentation for the implementation you use. cucumber-js parallel execution documentation

A practical review checklist
- Does the scenario test one behavior with a clear purpose?
- Does it arrange the state it needs, without relying on another scenario?
- Does Then verify an observable outcome with an explicit assertion?
- Would the wording still describe the behavior if an implementation detail changed?
- Does every step match one intended step definition?
- Can the scenario run alone, in a different order, and alongside other scenarios without shared-state interference?
- Is important setup visible to feature readers, rather than hidden in a hook?
These are practical design checks based on Cucumber’s documented behavior, not a promise that a suite will never be flaky. Cucumber’s documentation offers a writing recommendation of three to five steps per example; it does not establish a reliability percentage or benchmark.
Or skip the browser setup
If a Cucumber scenario needs a website screenshot as part of its workflow, you can call ScreenshotNeo’s API rather than building screenshot capture and cleanup into browser setup. The API accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. ScreenshotNeo
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, and its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

How do I share state between steps?
Steps in the same scenario should use the scenario context or state mechanism supported by your Cucumber implementation, with shared helper code for common operations. Keep that state scoped so separate scenarios do not depend on or overwrite one another.
How do I call other steps or scenarios?
Prefer calling shared helper methods from step definitions rather than invoking another step or scenario. Helpers reuse behavior without coupling one scenario’s meaning or execution to another.
