Yes. For standard copper Ethernet, keep the complete channel at or below 100 m (328 ft). That total includes the installed cable and patch cords at both ends—not just the in-wall run. The speed you need, cable category, installation quality, and interference also affect whether a link performs reliably.
What is the maximum length of an Ethernet cable?
For 10/100/1000BASE-T over Cat5e or Cat6, Schneider Electric gives a maximum channel length of 100 m (328 ft). Its guidance says the length must be within that limit to be certified; operation beyond it is not guaranteed. See Schneider Electric’s Cat5e/Cat6 length FAQ, published April 14, 2023, and last modified April 9, 2026.
In a typical structured-cabling installation, that channel is divided into two parts:
- Permanent horizontal cable: up to 90 m (295 ft) between the patch panel and the wall outlet.
- Patch cords: up to 10 m (33 ft) combined, including cords at both ends.
So a 90 m in-wall run leaves 10 m for the patch cords in the channel. If the installed section is shorter, the remaining allowance can be used by the cords, while keeping the total within 100 m.

Does a longer Ethernet cable reduce speed?
Length alone does not mean a cable will gradually negotiate a lower speed. Rather, a channel that exceeds its specified reach—or has excessive signal loss or electromagnetic interference—may fail to maintain reliable communication. Symptoms can include connection problems or performance that falls short of the expected rate. A link light only shows that a connection was established; it does not prove the cable meets the relevant channel requirements.
A run beyond 100 m might work in a particular setup, but that result is not a certification or guarantee. Schneider Electric notes that excessive signal loss and electromagnetic interference can affect performance. Even a shorter cable can have problems if the cable, terminations, or installation conditions are poor.

Does the limit change for 10-gigabit Ethernet?
It depends on the Ethernet application and the cable category. Cisco’s C9350 hardware documentation specifies 10GBASE-T operation up to 100 m over Cat6A. That is a useful basis for a new 10-gigabit run that needs the full reach: choose Cat6A and count patch cords within the channel total. See Cisco’s C9350 hardware documentation.
Do not assume that any Cat6 installation will support 10GBASE-T for 100 m. The achievable reach depends on channel conditions. IEEE’s historical 10GBASE-T development material includes Cat6 channel cases at both 55 m and 100 m; those cases do not establish a universal 100 m promise for Cat6. For a specific Cat6 run, rely on the applicable cabling specification and qualified testing rather than the category label alone. What about Ethernet cables that carry PoE?
Power over Ethernet does not remove the need to account for channel length. Cisco’s troubleshooting guidance retains a 100 m maximum for 10/100/1000BASE-T and discusses PoE operation at 100 m. For a long PoE connection, check the complete channel length and confirm that the switch, powered device, and cabling support the required power. - Required speed: Identify whether the connection needs 1 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s, or another supported Ethernet rate.
- Category and total channel length: For 10GBASE-T up to 100 m, Cisco specifies Cat6A. Include all patch cords in the distance calculation.
- Cable type: Distinguish an installed horizontal cable from a patch lead; the common structured-cabling allowance is 90 m for horizontal cabling plus 10 m total for patch cords.
- Environment and devices: Consider potential interference and verify that both network devices support the intended speed and, for PoE, power requirements.
For a new full-reach 10-gigabit installation, a Cat6A Ethernet cable is the category Cisco identifies for 10GBASE-T up to 100 m. Choose a length that fits the actual route, leaving room within the channel allowance for patch cords; do not treat a long patch cable as a substitute for a properly designed installed run.

How to troubleshoot a link that is unstable or slower than expected
- Measure the complete channel. Add the installed run and patch cords at both ends. Compare the sum with the 100 m copper-channel limit.
- Check the expected rate and category. Confirm the cable category and Ethernet application are appropriate; Cat6A is the documented choice for 10GBASE-T up to 100 m.
- Inspect the installation. Check connectors and terminations, and consider whether the cable route may be exposed to electromagnetic interference or excessive signal loss.
- Test the cable appropriately. A basic continuity tester can identify some broken conductors but does not certify category-level performance. Use a suitable Ethernet cable qualification tester when you need to assess whether an existing channel meets performance requirements.
- For PoE, verify power compatibility. Check the switch, powered device, cable, and required power alongside the channel length.
