To debug a native mobile app on real hardware, reproduce the problem on the affected device, launch the app from Xcode or Android Studio with that device selected, and inspect the code at the failure point. When the issue is intermittent or the app has already crashed, preserve device logs and crash reports with the exact device, OS, and build details. A simulator speeds up iteration, but it cannot reproduce every hardware feature or physical-device performance characteristic.

What to record before debugging

Start by making the failure reproducible and identifying the environment. Record:

  • Device model and operating-system version.
  • App build, configuration, and any relevant runtime settings.
  • The precise steps, inputs, and conditions that trigger the problem.
  • Whether the behavior also occurs in a simulator, and what differs between the two cases.

Use the affected device as the run destination. Keeping these details with logs or a crash report makes it easier to distinguish a device-specific issue from a change in the app build or reproduction conditions.

Debug an iOS app on a physical device

Run from Xcode

  1. Connect the Apple device to the Mac and make it available to Xcode.
  2. Select the physical device as the run destination for the app.
  3. Build and run. After a successful build, Xcode launches the app on the device and opens a debugger session.
  4. Set a breakpoint near the behavior you are investigating. Step through the code and inspect variables in Xcode’s debug area.

Apple recommends running on one or more physical devices to verify that an app behaves as intended. Simulators run on the Mac and do not reproduce all physical-device features or performance; use them for quick iteration, then verify hardware-sensitive behavior on device. See Apple’s guide to running an app on simulated or physical devices.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

When the app crashes or the debugger misses the problem

Inspect device logs and crash reports. Apple’s crash reports describe how the app terminated and the code running on each thread at the time of termination. Device console logs can also help investigate problems that do not end in a crash. Keep the report or relevant log entries with the device model, OS version, app build, and reproduction steps. Apple documents this in Analyzing a crash report.

Connect and debug an Android device

Enable device debugging and connect

  1. Enable Developer options on the Android device, then enable device debugging.
  2. Choose a connection method: connect over USB, or use Android’s documented wireless debugging path.
  3. In Android Studio, select the connected device as the run target and launch the app.

Settings labels and locations differ across Android versions and manufacturers, so use the target device’s settings rather than assuming one universal menu path. For Android 16 (API level 36) and later, Android’s developer-options guide places Wireless debugging under Settings > System > Developer options. Consult the official guide to running apps on a hardware device and developer-options guide for the applicable setup.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

A USB cable is optional if wireless debugging works for your setup. For a wired connection, use a cable that supports data transfer and fits the device and host connectors.

Inspect Java or native code in Android Studio

Set a breakpoint near the failing behavior, launch or attach the debugger, then step through execution and inspect values. Android Studio supports Java debugging and LLDB debugging for native code. The Android Studio debugger documentation describes its debugging workflow.

Capture evidence for failures outside a live session

If the issue is intermittent or the app has already exited, preserve relevant logs and crash details from the device tools alongside the device model, OS version, app build, and reproduction steps. These details provide context that a live debugging session may not capture.

Simulator or real device: which should you use?

Need Simulator Physical device
Fast iteration Useful for trying changes and exploring virtual configurations. Useful for confirming the behavior on the hardware that matters.
Hardware-dependent behavior Does not reproduce every physical-device feature. Use it to verify behavior that depends on actual hardware.
Performance characteristics Does not replicate physical-device performance. Shows behavior on the selected device; test additional relevant devices when needed.
Device and OS coverage Can help explore virtual configurations. Tests the specific hardware and OS combination in hand.

Apple explicitly cautions that simulators do not replicate the performance or features of a physical device. Use both approaches where practical: a simulator for rapid iteration, and hardware for verification of device-dependent behavior.

Expand Android testing beyond devices you own

If a bug appears only on a device model you do not have, Android’s hardware-device guide points to Firebase Test Lab for testing on a wider range of real devices hosted in the cloud. The guide establishes it as an option; check the service directly for current availability and terms.

Common problems and fixes

  • The Android device does not appear in Android Studio: Confirm Developer options and device debugging are enabled. For USB, check that the cable supports data transfer; alternatively, try the documented wireless path. Settings vary by device and OS version.
  • The bug appears only on a phone, not in a simulator: Reproduce on the target hardware and record the model, OS, build, and steps. Inspect code around the failing behavior, and check whether it depends on a physical-device feature or performance characteristic.
  • The debugger does not catch an intermittent failure: Preserve device logs and crash details. On Apple devices, crash reports show termination information and the code running on each thread at termination.
  • The app fails on another Android model you do not own: Use cloud-hosted real-device testing such as Firebase Test Lab to broaden device coverage.
