Use Playwright’s launchPersistentContext(userDataDir) when browser state must remain in a dedicated profile directory across browser restarts. Use a saved storageState when tests need repeatable authentication in fresh contexts. Never let simultaneous browser instances share the same user-data directory, and do not automate Chrome’s everyday default profile.
Choose a persistent profile or saved authentication state

A persistent profile and an authentication snapshot solve related but different problems: one keeps a browser profile on disk, while the other seeds a new context with saved authentication state. Neither approach should be confused with a guarantee that every aspect of a live browser session has been captured.
Persist a profile across browser runs
Use a directory dedicated to automation. The persistent context is the browser context returned by the launch call; closing it closes the browser. Keep the directory exclusive to that browser process while it is running. Playwright BrowserType API

Reuse authentication in fresh contexts
For test suites, saving authentication state is often a better fit than carrying one mutable profile between runs. Authenticate once, save the state, then use it to create new contexts. This makes the reuse explicit while allowing tests to have their own contexts. Playwright authentication guide

Handle applications that rely on sessionStorage
The built-in Playwright storageState API does not automatically persist sessionStorage. If the application keeps authentication or other required data there, exporting storage state alone will not recreate that part of the session. Add explicit save-and-restore logic for the relevant keys, or use a persistent profile if retaining the broader profile is the right fit. Playwright authentication guide

Do not run multiple browser instances against the same persistent profile directory. Playwright documents the restriction directly: “Note that browsers do not allow launching multiple instances with the same User Data Directory.” Playwright BrowserType API
For concurrent tests, prefer independent browser state per test or worker. Share only deliberately prepared authentication state, and create separate contexts rather than having workers mutate one profile. Playwright recommends isolating storage and cookies to improve reproducibility and prevent failures from cascading between tests. Playwright Best Practices

Protect profiles and authentication files
Persistent profiles and saved authentication state contain login-related data. Treat them as credentials: keep them out of public repositories, restrict file access, and avoid copying a personal browsing profile into automation. Playwright’s guides describe the cookies and local storage involved in profiles and authentication state; a 2025 paper also examines the security sensitivity of browser profile data. Troubleshoot common failures
Chrome exits or pages fail with your normal profile
Create a separate automation directory and use it with launchPersistentContext. Playwright says automation of Chrome’s default profile is unsupported under recent Chrome policy changes. Playwright BrowserType API
The browser cannot launch or reports a profile lock
Check that no other browser process is using the same user-data directory. Stop the competing process or give this run its own directory; simultaneous browser instances cannot share one directory. Playwright BrowserType API

Tests interfere with each other or become flaky
Stop sharing a mutable profile across concurrent workers. Use independent contexts and isolated state per test or worker, reusing only an intentionally prepared authentication snapshot. Playwright Best Practices Playwright authentication guide
Sign-in disappears after loading saved state
Check whether the application depends on sessionStorage. The built-in saved storageState does not automatically include it; implement explicit handling for the required session storage values if needed. Playwright authentication guide
