It still loads and renders pages and can interact with them, so scripts can automate browser work on a server or in a test runner without someone operating a visible browser window. “Headless” describes the missing interface—not the missing browser engine.
What a headless browser does
A headless browser uses browser software to navigate to pages, render their content, and perform scripted actions, but it does not show the normal window and controls. Depending on the browser and automation setup, a script can inspect a page, click or type, run tests, capture a screenshot, or create a PDF.
Chrome’s current documentation describes Headless mode as running “in an unattended environment, without any visible UI.” In current Chrome, headless and visible modes share Chrome functionality. That does not mean every headless implementation behaves identically: the browser, version, and launch mode matter.
What headless browsers are used for
- Automated browser testing: Run tests that navigate a real page, interact with controls, and check outcomes without a person driving the browser.
- Rendering inspection: Load a URL and inspect the rendered page or its DOM.
- Screenshots and PDFs: Save a rendered page as an image or print it to a PDF.
- Navigation and interface automation: Exercise multi-step flows and complex web interfaces.
- Performance analysis: Automate browser actions while collecting information relevant to a performance investigation.
These tasks are examples, not a guarantee that a particular headless mode reproduces every user-visible condition. If the goal is to test what users see in a particular browser, choose a browser mode that matches that target closely enough.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Browser versus automation framework
Chrome is a browser. Puppeteer, Selenium WebDriver, and Playwright are tools for automating browsers; they are not themselves browser engines. This distinction matters when configuring a test: the automation library supplies an interface for commands, while the selected browser and mode determine what is launched.
- Chrome: The browser can be launched in headless mode, including with the
--headlessflag. - Puppeteer: A JavaScript library for automating browsers. Its documented tasks include navigation, screenshots, PDFs, interface testing, and performance analysis; it documents Chrome and Firefox automation.
- Selenium WebDriver: An automation interface used in Chrome’s headless examples.
- Playwright: Supports Chromium and documents channels for branded Chrome or Edge. Its default Chromium headless path uses a separate headless shell; selecting a Chromium channel can use newer Chrome Headless behavior.
Chrome Headless: current and older implementations
Chrome’s newer Headless mode shares Chrome code with its visible mode. The earlier Headless implementation was a separate implementation with its own bugs and limitations. Since Chrome 132.0.6793.0, that older mode is available only as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary. The version boundary and distinction are documented by Chrome; check current Chrome documentation for present launch instructions rather than relying on examples written for the initial implementation.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Playwright makes this distinction relevant in practice: its default headless Chromium path uses the headless shell, while a Chromium channel can select the newer Headless implementation or installed branded Chrome or Edge. Playwright warns that headless shell and newer branded-browser Headless implementations can differ in some cases.
How to choose an automation setup
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Browser coverage | Check which engines or branded browsers the tool supports for your task. Playwright documents Chromium and Chrome/Edge channels; Puppeteer documents Chrome and Firefox automation. |
| Language and API | Fit the automation interface to your project. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library, and Chrome’s examples include Selenium WebDriver. These examples are not an exhaustive language-support comparison. |
| Mode fidelity | Match the mode to the behavior you need to test. Current Chrome Headless shares Chrome functionality with visible mode, while Playwright notes possible differences between headless shell and newer branded-browser Headless. |
| Task and output | Choose based on whether you need UI tests, screenshots, PDFs, page inspection, or performance analysis. |
There is no universal best framework established by these criteria. The documentation cited here also does not provide comparable speed or cost benchmarks, so do not assume headless operation is always faster or cheaper than visible-browser automation.
