For a useful website speed test, start with Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI) on the exact page you want to assess. Read its real-user field data separately from its simulated lab results, then use Lighthouse, Chrome DevTools, or WebPageTest to investigate the cause. A single score—or one test run—cannot describe every visitor’s experience.
How to run a website speed test properly
- Choose the page and audience. Test the actual landing page, product page, or other URL under investigation; the home page may behave differently. PSI reports data for an individual URL when enough samples exist, and may fall back to origin-level data for the site.
- Run the URL through PSI. Inspect its field and lab sections as separate kinds of evidence, not competing versions of the same measurement.
- Record what the report actually represents. Note the device category, the Core Web Vitals and percentile shown, and whether the field result is for the URL or the origin. Also note that Lighthouse is a simulated page load, while Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data summarizes real-user experience over a trailing 28-day period. See Google’s PageSpeed Insights documentation, last updated October 21, 2024.
- Choose a diagnostic tool for the problem. Use Lighthouse or Chrome DevTools for lab audits and local debugging; use WebPageTest when you need controlled comparisons or deeper inspection. These tools complement PSI, but their results are not interchangeable.
- Compare like with like. When checking whether a change helped, keep test conditions as similar as practical and repeat lab measurements before attributing a small score difference to the change. Google notes that runs can vary with network availability, client hardware availability, and client resource contention.
- Check field results after deployment. Revisit real-user data over time. Because the CrUX period is a trailing 28 days, it does not provide an immediate before-and-after verdict on a deployment.
What the speed metrics tell you
For field Core Web Vitals, Google’s 2024 guidance defines a good result as Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) at or below 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) at or below 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) at or below 0.1. PSI classifies field experience at the 75th percentile. An aggregation with sufficient data for all three metrics passes when all three are rated good. These are thresholds for interpreting experience, not statistics about how many websites meet them. Details: Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance.
PSI also labels a Lighthouse Performance category score of 90 or higher as good. That is a lab-score category, not proof that real users have good Core Web Vitals. Google cautions that a good lab result does not guarantee a good real-user experience; use field data for that question.
What if PageSpeed Insights has no field data?
A URL may be new or lack enough real-user samples for a page-level report. PSI may then display origin-level data; if the origin also lacks sufficient samples, it cannot report field experience. Missing field data does not establish that a page is either fast or slow. Use the lab diagnostics to inspect the page, and treat field performance as unknown until enough real-user data is available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which website speed test tool should you use?
| Tool | Best use | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| PageSpeed Insights | First check of a public URL | Combines Lighthouse lab diagnostics with available CrUX field data for a page or, when applicable, its origin. |
| Lighthouse | Lab audit and iterative debugging | Simulated performance feedback; can be run through Chrome DevTools. Lab values need not match field values. |
| WebPageTest | Controlled comparisons and deeper performance inspection | More detailed investigation and testing; it can also run Lighthouse. |
| Chrome DevTools Performance panel | Investigating runtime bottlenecks | Tools to profile page behavior while debugging in the browser. |
Google’s Mobile Site Speed Playbook describes the trade-off: lab data offers reproducibility and a debugging environment, but might miss real-world bottlenecks and cannot correlate against real-world page KPIs. Lighthouse’s guidance similarly recommends field data for the long-term view of user experience and lab data for iteration: Lighthouse documentation.
For site-wide real-world monitoring rather than an individual URL check, Google Search Console also offers a Core Web Vitals report. Its scope differs from PSI’s URL-level test.

How to use test results to make a decision
- Need to know how deployed pages feel to users? Prioritize PSI field data when available, and look at the 75th-percentile Core Web Vitals rather than relying on a Lighthouse score alone.
- Need feedback while changing a page? Use Lighthouse or DevTools to find and iterate on lab-measured issues, then validate deployed experience with field data when it accumulates.
- Need a repeatable comparison or more diagnostic detail? Use WebPageTest and hold conditions steady across runs; avoid treating a minor difference from one run as conclusive.
- Comparing several pages? Test each relevant URL. A site’s home page is not a substitute for its key landing or product pages, and origin-level data is broader than a particular page.
Google’s published thresholds describe what counts as good for each metric; they do not establish the share of websites that pass. A test should therefore answer a specific question about a page or its users, rather than serve as a universal ranking of site speed.
