You can show a category-specific fallback image in WordPress with a plugin rule or a plugin-provided filter. First decide whether you want an image to appear only when a post has no featured image, or whether you want to assign the category image to posts and change their saved featured-image settings. Those are different workflows, with different effects on existing posts and editorial control.
Choose between a display fallback and changing saved featured images
A display-time fallback supplies an image when a theme or plugin requests a post thumbnail and no specific image is set. It can preserve a post’s saved featured image, making the fallback easier to change or remove later. Its effect depends on where the requesting theme or plugin uses the thumbnail; a rule does not necessarily update every image location on a site.
A bulk-assignment tool instead writes the category image as the featured image on posts. That can affect existing posts and replace editors’ manually selected images. Before using one, check whether its action applies to published posts, future posts, or both, and how it handles a post assigned to several categories.

Confirm the installed version’s current interface and scope before relying on either behavior.

If a global default plus category overrides is what you need, Freundschaft’s listing also describes that arrangement and numeric priorities: higher priority numbers win, and the lowest term ID wins when priorities tie. Verify support for the post types and behavior you rely on in the version you install.
Take care with tools that write category images onto posts
[Category Featured Image](https://wordpress.org/plugins/category-featured-image/) describes setting the featured image of all posts when a category image is set, and documents support for custom post types. Its listing warns that updating a category image can change the featured image for every post in that category. It also warns that updating the category with no image selected can remove featured images from every post in the category. This is not a display-only fallback: review the affected content before applying changes.

That plugin documents parent-category precedence when a post matches more than one category. This can make outcomes predictable, but it may not match your editorial preference. Test on a staging site or a small set of posts first, and back up content before using any tool that changes saved featured-image assignments.
Use a plugin-provided filter for custom category logic
The [Default Featured Image plugin](https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/default-featured-image/) provides the dfi_thumbnail_id filter. Its callback receives the current default image ID and post ID, so code can inspect the post and return an attachment ID for a matching category. If no category condition matches, return the original filter value so the existing default remains available.

For example, the logic is:
- Receive the current default image ID and post ID through the plugin filter.
- Load the post and check the intended post type and category.
- Return the attachment ID for the category image when a rule matches.
- Return the original image ID when no rule matches.
This is a filter supplied by the plugin, not a WordPress core hook. The plugin documentation’s example evaluates category checks in code order, so the first matching condition wins when a post has several categories. Put the preferred category first or implement another explicit precedence rule. The [WPBeginner tutorial](https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/set-fallback-featured-image-based-post-category-wordpress/) published July 3, 2026 also describes plugin and code approaches; its sample targets WordPress’s built-in category taxonomy unless extended.
Check coverage before turning the rule on
- Existing posts: Determine whether the rule changes saved featured images or only supplies an image when a thumbnail is requested.
- Future posts: Some rule descriptions specifically refer to new posts, so do not assume older posts are covered.
- Multiple categories: Confirm which category wins, whether the rule uses priority, or whether code order decides.
- Unmatched posts: Decide whether they should remain without an image or use a global fallback. Freundschaft documents a global fallback; [Setup Default Featured Image](https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/setup-default-feature-image/) documents a global fallback with category inclusion and exclusion, while its listing places advanced taxonomy-term defaults in its Pro version.
- Custom content: If you use custom post types or taxonomies, verify that the chosen method supports them and that its rule applies to the intended content.
- Theme behavior: Check the actual archive, search, and other locations where your theme requests featured images; a fallback mechanism only helps where it is used.
Set up and verify the chosen method
- Choose the behavior: Use a display-time fallback to preserve post-level image choices; use a bulk-assignment workflow only if you intend to change saved featured images.
- Define category precedence: Decide which image should appear when a post has multiple categories, and confirm that the plugin or code follows that rule.
- Set a fallback for unmatched posts: Choose a global image if appropriate, or leave unmatched posts without one.
- Test representative posts: Check a post with its own image, one without an image in the target category, one in multiple categories, and one outside the rule.
- Check the published display: Review the site locations where the thumbnail should appear, then confirm that saved featured images remain unchanged if you chose a display-only approach.
Plugin listings and interfaces can change. Check each linked listing for current compatibility, maintenance, and feature boundaries before installing or relying on a specific setting.
