To limit how many items customers can buy in WordPress, set a purchase rule in a WooCommerce extension. First decide what the rule counts: one product or variation, a category total, the whole order, or a customer’s purchases over time. Those are different limits, and choosing the wrong scope can let a customer buy more than intended.
Choose what the quantity limit counts
Write down the rule in plain language before choosing an extension. For example, “no more than five of this product” is a product-level cap; “no more than five items from this category” is an aggregated category cap. A rule applied separately to every product in a category is not the same as a cap on the category total.
- One product or variation: Set a minimum, maximum, or required multiple for that item.
- A category or group: Decide whether the limit applies to each product in the group or to the combined quantity across the group.
- The entire order: Apply a minimum, maximum, or other restriction to the cart/order total.
- A customer over time: Limit purchases by a logged-in customer based on earlier orders or a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or custom period.
- A customer type: Apply different rules to user roles or guests, if the extension supports those filters.
Also decide whether customers must buy in increments, whether the rule is active only during a date range, and what should happen when a cart breaks the rule.
Choose a WooCommerce extension that matches the rule
WooCommerce does not provide one universal quantity-limit setting for every scope. These extensions document different combinations of rules; check their current feature details and compatibility before installing.

- In WordPress admin, go to Products and edit the product.
- In Product Data, open General.
- Set Minimum Quantity and/or Maximum Quantity. Set Group of if customers must purchase in multiples.
- Save or update the product, then test the rule on the storefront.
For example, a minimum of two requires a customer to buy at least two; a maximum of five caps the quantity of that product at five; a group of three requires quantities in multiples of three. The extension documentation also describes order rules under WooCommerce > Settings > Products > General. Check the extension’s current documentation for the exact controls available for the rule you want.
Make the restriction work through cart and checkout
A quantity field on the product page is only one part of the rule. Customers may add the same product more than once, change quantities in the cart, or reach checkout with a disallowed quantity. The extension must validate the relevant scope at the cart or checkout stage, not merely display a suggested quantity on the product page.

- Check whether the extension counts existing cart quantities after repeated add-to-cart actions.
- Confirm how it handles cart edits that move a quantity below a minimum, above a maximum, or off a required multiple.
- For a category rule, check whether it totals the category or checks each product separately.
- For customer and time-window rules, verify whether guests are excluded, identified another way, or governed by separate rules.
Test before making the rule live
After configuring the rule, test the customer journey on the storefront. Use an allowed quantity and at least one disallowed quantity for the specific limit you created.
- Open the product page and try a quantity below the minimum, above the maximum, or outside the required multiple.
- Add the product more than once and check whether the total in the cart is still restricted.
- Edit quantities in the cart and try to proceed to checkout with a disallowed total.
- For category or order rules, add multiple relevant products and verify the combined quantity behaves as intended.
- For role, guest, prior-order, or time-based rules, test with the applicable account state and rule period.
Check the message customers receive when a rule is broken and confirm they can tell what to change. Since theme and checkout customizations can affect the customer experience, test on the actual store configuration before relying on the restriction.
