What you need before setup
For the official Affiliate Program for WooCommerce extension, you need a working WordPress site, active WooCommerce, administrator access and functioning WordPress email delivery for program messages. Install and activate the extension
For Affiliate Program for WooCommerce, the documented installation route is to download the ZIP file from your WooCommerce account and upload it through WordPress Admin. Other marketplace extensions may have a different account-based installation process.
- In your WooCommerce account, download the extension’s ZIP file.
- In WordPress Admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Select the ZIP file, choose Install Now, and wait for installation to finish.
- Choose Activate Plugin.

Configure signup, commissions, tracking and payouts
Complete the extension’s onboarding wizard if one is available, saving each step. Affiliate for WooCommerce organizes its onboarding around essential settings, commissions, payouts, affiliates and a tracking check. If you skip a wizard, review the equivalent settings in the plugin’s admin pages.
Set up affiliate applications
Enable a registration form only when you are ready to accept applications. Choose manual approval if you want to vet applicants before they promote your store; automatic approval is for programs that are prepared to activate applicants immediately. Choose commission and referral rules
Set a commission rate or rule that fits your product margins and program policy. Depending on the extension, rules may apply storewide, to particular products or categories, to individual affiliates, or across multiple tiers. Review how the extension handles competing referrals, how long referral tracking lasts, and whether it permits self-referrals or coupon-based attribution. These options vary by product; do not assume a setting from one extension exists in another.
Set up payouts and program emails
Select a payout method the extension supports and configure any minimum threshold or withdrawal-request process. Decide when a commission becomes payable, according to the extension’s options and your program policy. Check that application, approval, referral and payout emails can be delivered through your WordPress email setup.

Test a referral before launch
Run a complete test with an affiliate and order before promoting the program. WooCommerce recommends checking a test affiliate and test order; the Affiliate for WooCommerce onboarding guide also describes opening a generated link in a private browser window and checking for caching problems if tracking fails.
- Create or designate a test affiliate and generate a referral link.
- Open the link in a private or incognito browser window so existing browser data is less likely to affect the test.
- Place a test order using the referral session.
- In the extension’s admin area, confirm that the referral and expected commission appear and that the payout status matches the order’s state.
- If no referral is recorded, check whether caching is removing referral parameters or preventing the tracking cookie from being set, then repeat the test.
Launch only after the rules and workflow are clear
Before inviting partners, make sure the application process, approval policy, commission rules, referral tracking and payout process are configured as intended. Publish the registration page or share it directly with prospective affiliates only after the end-to-end test succeeds. Use the chosen extension’s current documentation for its specific admin controls.
