Choose a locator that clearly identifies the intended element: usually a role and accessible name, a form label, or a unique and predictable ID. Use a deliberate test ID when those user-facing options do not fit or your team has adopted test IDs as a testing contract. Then verify uniqueness and wait for the page state your action requires—good selectors alone do not prevent timing failures.
What makes a web element locator reliable?
A reliable locator points to the element your test intends to use, and does so in a way that survives routine changes to page layout or implementation. It should be unique in the page state where the test uses it, understandable to the people maintaining the test, and based on a property the application is expected to preserve.
Reliability has two separate parts: selecting the right element and interacting with it at the right time. A unique locator can still fail if the page has not reached the state needed for a click or assertion. Playwright describes locators as central to its auto-waiting and retryability; Selenium’s guidance likewise notes that an application may need to reach the right state before a command runs. Choose a locator based on meaning and stability
Role and accessible name
For controls such as buttons, links, checkboxes, and headings, a role paired with an accessible name often makes the test’s intent easy to read. In Playwright, for example, use getByRole. Role locators reflect how users and assistive technology perceive the page; they are a locator strategy, not an accessibility audit or proof of conformance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Names must be sufficiently specific. If two buttons are both named “Save,” a role-and-name locator may still match more than one element. Scope it to a meaningful region or improve the accessible name if the interface itself is ambiguous.
Labels and other user-facing attributes
For form fields, a label-based locator can express the field’s purpose. Playwright also provides getByText, getByPlaceholder, getByAltText, and getByTitle. Prefer text when the visible wording is part of the behavior being tested; remember that copy edits and localization can legitimately change it. Avoid relying on an ambiguous substring when the full name can identify the element.

Unique, predictable IDs
Selenium recommends using an HTML ID when one is available, unique, and consistently predictable. An ID is not automatically stable: check whether the application generates it dynamically or changes it across renders or releases. Selenium also supports locating by CSS selector, name, link text, partial link text, class name, and tag name. Selenium tips on working with locators · Selenium locator strategies
Test IDs as an explicit contract
Playwright supports getByTestId for attributes such as data-testid. Use this when your team has chosen test IDs as a convention or when a role or text locator cannot identify the element appropriately. Agree that these attributes are maintained deliberately: they form a contract between the application and its tests, so changes should be intentional rather than incidental. Targeted CSS or XPath
CSS and XPath are useful when semantic locators or stable identifiers are unavailable. The risk is not the selector syntax itself, but dependence on implementation details that are likely to change. Long chains tied to DOM ancestry or layout can break during refactors. Keep structural selectors short, scoped to a stable region, and based on a clear target criterion. Avoid positional selectors such as “the third button” unless position is itself what the test is meant to verify.
A practical locator workflow
- Identify the intended control. Describe what a user sees or does: for example, the “Continue” button in a checkout form.
- Try a semantic locator first. Use role and accessible name for a control, or a label for a form field. Choose text only when the wording is relevant to the test.
- Check uniqueness in context. Confirm the locator resolves to exactly the intended element in the page state being tested. If it matches several elements, narrow the scope or choose a more precise name.
- Check the locator’s stability. Ask whether its value is user-facing, deliberately maintained, or likely to change with layout, generated classes, or DOM refactoring.
- Use a test ID or targeted structural selector when needed. Prefer a deliberate test contract over a brittle chain of incidental markup.
- Handle readiness separately. Wait for the actual state required by the action or assertion using the framework’s supported waiting behavior; do not treat an arbitrary sleep as a locator fix.
- Assert a meaningful outcome. Verify the user-visible result of the interaction, not only that the locator could be constructed.
How to decide between locator types
| Locator choice | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Role plus accessible name | The target is a recognizable control and its accessible name is clear. | Duplicate names or changes to accessible wording. |
| Label | The target is a labeled form field. | Missing, duplicate, or changing labels. |
| Text | Visible copy is part of the behavior under test. | Copy edits, localization, and ambiguous partial matches. |
| Unique HTML ID | The ID is unique and remains predictable across renders and releases. | Generated or changing IDs. |
| Test ID | The team maintains test attributes as an explicit testing contract, or semantic options are unsuitable. | The contract needs deliberate ownership and maintenance. |
| CSS or XPath | No appropriate semantic or stable identifier is available. | Long selectors tied to DOM structure, layout, or incidental implementation. |
Diagnose locator and timing failures separately
The locator matches no element
- Check that the page is on the expected screen and that the element is present in the current state.
- Confirm the role, accessible name, label, or attribute actually matches the rendered element.
- If the UI loads asynchronously, wait for the relevant condition rather than adding a fixed delay without evidence.
The locator matches more than one element
- Use a more specific accessible name or label, or scope the locator to a stable section of the page.
- Consider whether duplicate controls indicate an unclear interface or an incorrect page state.
- Avoid resolving ambiguity solely with a positional selector unless order is part of the requirement.
The locator is unique but the action fails intermittently
- Investigate whether the page has reached the state required for the action. Locator quality and readiness are different issues.
- Use the test framework’s documented waiting and retry behavior for the condition the test needs.
- Assert a meaningful state transition, such as a confirmation appearing, rather than assuming that a click alone proves success.
The test breaks after a UI refactor
- Replace selectors that encode long DOM paths, generated classes, or layout positions with user-facing semantics or a maintained test contract where appropriate.
- For text-based locators, decide whether the copy change alters the tested behavior or merely requires an intentional test update.
- For test IDs and IDs, confirm their maintainers treat them as stable contracts.

For capturing a page screenshot rather than locating a control in an automated test, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. Its API can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
