Restreamer documents persistence and specific migration paths, but does not guarantee that every YouTube credential or destination setting survives every upgrade.
Before updating: identify your version and preserve your setup
Restreamer’s update instructions differ for current v2 installations and legacy v0.6.x installations. Check the installed version first; do not apply the short v2 update procedure to a v0.6.x container. The official update instructions recommend using the latest datarhei Restreamer, but the correct path depends on your starting version.
Record the Docker configuration
Keep the actual Docker run command or Compose configuration used for your deployment. Note the image name and variant, port mappings, environment variables, and host paths. The update procedure assumes you will restart using the usual Docker invocation for your installation; replacing it with a generic command can omit settings specific to your setup. Restreamer documents its Docker configuration and mounts in its Docker installation guide.
Back up persistent state
For v2, the documented container paths are /core/config for configuration and state, and /core/data for persistent internal files. Make a separate copy of the host directory mounted to /core/config before changing the container. Consider copying the host directory mounted to /core/data as well. Ensure the backup is separate from the live directories, so a mistaken replacement or removal does not affect both.

You can also export the database from System settings in expert mode. Restreamer documents database export in its system settings guide. Treat the export as an additional safeguard, not a substitute for retaining the correct host mounts.
Update an existing Restreamer v2 Docker installation
- Confirm the version and mounts. Verify that this is a v2 installation and identify the host directories mapped to
/core/configand/core/data. Check that they contain the state you expect. - Make and verify a backup. Copy the host-mounted configuration directory to a separate location. Back up the data directory if it contains files you need, and export the database from expert-mode System settings if available.
- Pull the desired current image. Use the image and variant appropriate to your installation. Preserve choices such as a
cudavariant rather than switching variants without a reason. The official update page says to pull the current Docker image before restarting. - Recreate or restart with the same configuration. Retain the existing port mappings and settings, and map the same host paths to
/core/configand/core/data. Do not accidentally point the new container at an empty host directory: the container’s internal paths alone do not preserve state if the host mounts are missing or changed. - Verify Restreamer and YouTube before going live. Open Restreamer’s stream settings and confirm the saved destination and stream configuration. Check the YouTube destination as well, then test the setup before the next broadcast. Restreamer’s stream settings manual describes the active stream configuration area; it does not establish a universal guarantee that all YouTube credentials and settings survive every update path.
Migrating a legacy v0.6.x installation to v2
A v0.6.x installation needs the documented migration route, not just a v2 image pull. Restreamer’s migration guide says to upgrade through v0.6.8 first; it warns that skipping that version may result in lost settings. Adapt the paths below to your host deployment rather than copying them blindly.

- Back up the existing configuration. Keep a separate copy of the directory currently mounted at
/restreamer/db, along with the deployment configuration and any needed data. - Upgrade the legacy installation to v0.6.8. Start v0.6.8 and stream from the video source, as directed by the migration guide.
- Stop and remove the v0.6.8 container. Retain the host data and configuration directories; removing a container should not mean deleting the files you need to migrate.
- Pull the v2 image and adjust the mounts. Change the old configuration mount from
/mnt/restreamer/db:/restreamer/dbto/mnt/restreamer/db:/core/config, and add a data mount such as/opt/restreamer/data:/core/data. These are guide examples: use the actual host paths for your installation. - Start v2 and check the import. The guide says the first v2 startup imports the settings and creates new
db.jsonandconfig.jsonfiles in the mounted configuration directory. It also says legacyRS_environment values are transferred on first v2 startup and may then be removed. - Verify the YouTube destination and stream. Inspect the resulting configuration in Restreamer and confirm the YouTube destination before broadcasting. Do not assume a successful settings import proves that every YouTube credential is usable.
What to verify before the next YouTube broadcast
- The container is using the intended image and variant, with the expected ports and environment settings.
- The host directories are still mounted to
/core/configand/core/data; Restreamer starts with the expected saved state. - The stream settings and YouTube destination are present and correct. If a credential is missing or rejected, restore or re-enter it before starting the broadcast.
- The stream can be started and appears as expected in YouTube. Resolve any destination or connection issue before relying on the updated installation for a live session.
Rollback limits for Restreamer 2.4.0 and later
Rollback is not a universal safety net. Restreamer’s migration guide says FFmpeg 5.1.2 in versions 2.4.0 and later is incompatible with earlier versions. It describes a limited route involving database file renaming and an older image such as 2.3.0, but warns that processes created with 2.4.0 or newer cannot be restored by that route. Consult the guide for the exact situation before attempting a downgrade; keep the separate backup so you can recover files without treating this narrow procedure as a general rollback recipe.
Common update problems and fixes
Restreamer starts with missing or default settings
The new container may not have the original host directory mounted to /core/config, or may be pointed to a different, empty directory. Stop and compare the new mount configuration with the one recorded before the update. Restore the correct host path rather than rebuilding settings over an uncertain state.

Files or state do not appear to persist
Check both the host-to-container path mapping and the host directory itself. For v2, configuration/state belongs at /core/config, while persistent internal files use /core/data. Recreating a container without the expected host mounts can leave its state non-persistent.
The legacy migration does not import settings
Confirm that the installation followed the v0.6.8 bridge and that the old configuration directory is mounted to /core/config in v2. Check that the host path points to the actual legacy database, not a new empty directory. The migration guide warns against skipping v0.6.8.

The YouTube destination is absent or fails after the update
Restreamer’s documentation does not promise that every YouTube destination credential survives every version path. Review the destination and stream configuration in Restreamer, restore or re-enter the required credential if needed, and verify the setup before starting the broadcast.
A downgrade fails after updating to 2.4.0 or newer
FFmpeg 5.1.2 compatibility limits the documented downgrade route, and processes created in 2.4.0 or newer cannot be restored through it. Do not repeatedly switch image versions expecting a general rollback; refer to the migration guide’s narrow instructions and your preserved backup.
