Search for the role and location you want, apply only the filters that matter, then turn on a job alert for that search. Set up separate alerts for different roles, locations, or target employers so one narrow or mixed query does not hide relevant openings. Email is the common option; LinkedIn also offers app notifications.
Set up job alerts on LinkedIn
- Open LinkedIn’s Jobs search and search for the title, keywords, company, and location you want to monitor.
- Apply relevant filters, then turn on the job-alert control on the results page.
- Open Manage alerts to choose daily or weekly frequency and email, LinkedIn notifications, or both. A new alert defaults to daily delivery by both email and LinkedIn notification.
- To change or remove an alert later, go to Jobs and preferences and manage your alerts.
LinkedIn allows up to 20 job alerts. It also documents alerts for new jobs posted by a specific company through that company’s LinkedIn Page. See LinkedIn’s job-alert help and instructions for company-specific alerts.
Set up job alerts on Indeed
- Sign in to Indeed or create an account.
- Search by job title, keyword, or company, then enter a city, state, ZIP code, or “remote.”
- On the first results page, look near the bottom for the job-alert field. Enter the email address where you want alerts and activate the alert.
Indeed describes its alerts as email tailored to your preferences and companies you follow. An alert may not be available for an international search, and Indeed says it will not send an email when there are no new jobs matching the search. See Indeed’s job-alert help.
Set up job alerts on USAJOBS
- Sign in to USAJOBS or create a profile.
- Search by job or location and apply the filters relevant to you.
- Select Turn on job alert, give the alert a name, choose a frequency, and add it.
- Manage alerts from your profile. You can pause, edit, archive, delete, or renew one.
USAJOBS offers daily, weekly, monthly, or never email frequency. You can create up to 10 alerts; each remains active for one year unless renewed. The agency recommends broader keywords or fewer filters if a search returns no jobs—for example, try “nurse” instead of the narrower “geriatric nurse.” It also advises that daily alerts can be useful for specific or competitive roles because some announcements close early or after reaching a certain number of applications; that is USAJOBS’s practical guidance, not a measured guarantee of better hiring outcomes. Do not confuse job alerts with saved-job reminders
A new-posting alert tells you about jobs matching a search. Separately, USAJOBS can email you when a saved announcement is scheduled to close in three calendar days. Saving an announcement does not make it a new-job alert. See USAJOBS instructions for saving a job announcement.
Choose search criteria that find the right openings
- Start with the essentials: role or keywords, location, and employment arrangement. Add filters only when they remove results you would not consider.
- Separate unlike searches: create distinct alerts for different job types, locations, or target employers rather than combining incompatible criteria.
- Broaden a quiet search: try alternate or broader job-title wording and remove restrictive filters if too few results arrive.
- Use employer alerts when available: LinkedIn documents company-specific alerts through company Pages. The sources cited here do not establish that feature on Indeed or USAJOBS.
- Pick a schedule that fits the platform: LinkedIn documents daily or weekly alerts; USAJOBS documents daily, weekly, monthly, or never. The cited help pages do not show that one frequency improves hiring outcomes.

Troubleshoot missing or unhelpful alerts
- Check whether the alert is active. Make sure it was not paused, archived, or removed; USAJOBS alerts can be managed in your profile.
- Verify your account email and notification settings. Check the email address on the account and the platform’s delivery settings.
- Check spam or junk folders. A delivered alert may have been filtered by your email provider.
- Loosen the search. Broaden the keywords or remove filters that may be excluding relevant postings.
- Allow for no new matches. Indeed specifically says it does not send an alert email when no new jobs match.
- Check regional availability. Indeed says alerts may not be available for international searches.

Can I get job alerts without creating an account?
Requirements differ by service: the cited Indeed instructions say to sign in or create an account, and USAJOBS requires a profile. LinkedIn’s cited setup instructions describe alerts for members.

Do job alerts guarantee I will hear about every new opening?
No such guarantee is established by the cited platform help pages. Alerts depend on the search criteria and the platform’s matching and delivery; check the relevant job board directly for important searches.
