What changed between SingleFileZ and SingleFile?
SingleFileZ is no longer a separate project option according to its repository: it says, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” The repository points users to SingleFile’s File format options to choose self-extracting files or import existing settings. For a new Chrome installation, get SingleFile rather than looking for a separate SingleFileZ extension.
SingleFile is a browser extension and command-line tool that saves a webpage as one HTML file. Its README lists Chrome among the supported browsers.
Which SingleFile format should you choose?
Both formats produce one file, but they package page resources differently. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize straightforward viewing or a compressed archive whose resources can be extracted.

For a page you need to open reliably on another computer, standard HTML is the simpler starting point. If you want the compressed packaging or need to extract resources, use self-extracting output and check how that exact format behaves in the Chrome setup where you plan to open it. The older SingleFileZ FAQ says Chrome could not open SingleFileZ files directly from the filesystem without a command-line switch or the extension. That historical statement should not be treated as a blanket description of every current SingleFile self-extracting option.
How to save a webpage in Chrome with SingleFile
- Install the SingleFile extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the page you want to keep and use the SingleFile toolbar button to save the current tab. The default destination is Chrome’s configured download folder.
- To choose the file type, open SingleFile’s options and find the File format section. Select standard HTML or self-extracting output.
- Open the saved file in the Chrome setup you intend to use. For important collections, save and reopen a representative page before relying on the chosen format.
SingleFile also documents context-menu saving for the current tab, selected content, or a selected frame. Other workflows include saving selected links or multiple tabs, adding annotations, setting up auto-save, and using the Ctrl+Shift+Y keyboard shortcut. The README documents optional uploads to Google Drive and GitHub; the Chrome Web Store listing also describes Dropbox and WebDAV destinations configured through the options page.

What to know about Chrome compatibility, completeness, and privacy
Local-file restrictions depend on the format
Do not assume every self-extracting file opens under the same conditions. The old SingleFileZ FAQ describes restrictions for its files opened from the filesystem, while SingleFile’s current README distinguishes its self-extracting options and identifies a universal format. Test the specific output format in the browser and environment that will be used to read it.
Some pages or resources may not be saveable
The SingleFileZ FAQ notes that browser security restrictions can prevent extensions from saving some protected domains. It also says a save can download resources present on a page even if they are not visible or cached. A single-file archive is therefore not a guarantee that every protected page, embedded frame, or remote resource will be preserved exactly.

Settings trade processing time for captured content
The SingleFileZ FAQ says its default configuration is optimized for smaller pages and that some optimization can slow saving. Disabling removal of hidden elements or unused styles may reduce processing time and CPU use, but disabling frame or deferred-image handling can leave content out. These are project-reported trade-offs, not independent performance measurements.
The same FAQ says SingleFileZ performs its work in the browser and does not upload data to third-party servers. That statement concerns the extension’s processing; if you enable a remote destination in SingleFile, the resulting upload necessarily involves that destination.
